Kundli matching by name estimates a person's Janma Nakshatra from their name's first syllable, using the traditional Namakarana naming-syllable system, then scores the same eight Ashtakoot kootas as a full match. It's a genuine classical fallback for when birth details are unavailable — not preferred, and less precise than matching by date of birth.

What Is Kundli Matching by Name?

Kundli matching by name is a Vedic astrology shortcut that infers a person's birth star from their given name instead of their birth date, time, and place.

Every one of the 27 Nakshatras is traditionally linked to a small set of Sanskrit starting syllables through the Namakarana (naming) tradition — the same practice that guides parents choosing an auspicious first letter for a newborn. Name-based kundli matching runs this process in reverse: it takes an adult's existing name, matches its first syllable against the Nakshatra-syllable table, and treats that inferred Nakshatra as the input for Ashtakoot Milan — the standard 36-point, eight-koota compatibility system described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The koota-by-koota scoring itself does not change; only where the Nakshatra comes from changes.

This method exists for a specific, narrow situation: a family has lost or never had access to one or both partners' exact birth details, but has their names. It is not a method chosen for its accuracy — it is chosen because it is the only method left.

How Does Kundli Matching by Name Actually Work?

Kundli matching by name works by looking up each person's first name syllable in the Nakshatra-naming-syllable table, then reading off the associated Nakshatra as if it were the person's real birth star.

The table below is the same Nakshatra-naming-syllable reference used across AstroSight's baby names by Nakshatra guides, reproduced here for the matching context — note several syllables map to more than one Nakshatra, so treat the table as a starting point, not a verdict:

Nakshatra | Starting syllables | Nakshatra | Starting syllables

  1. Ashwini | Chu, Che, Cho, La | Chitra | Pe, Po, Ra, Ri
  2. Bharani | Li, Lu, Le, Lo | Swati | Ru, Re, Ro, Ta
  3. Krittika | A, I, U, E | Vishakha | Ti, Tu, Te, To
  4. Rohini | O, Va, Vi, Vu | Anuradha | Na, Ni, Nu, Ne
  5. Mrigashira | Ve, Vo, Ka, Ki | Jyeshtha | No, Ya, Yi, Yu
  6. Ardra | Ku, Gha, Ing, Jha | Mula | Ye, Yo, Bha, Bhi
  7. Punarvasu | Ke, Ko, Ha, Hi | Purva Ashadha | Bhu, Dha, Pha, Da
  8. Pushya | Hu, He, Ho, Da | Uttara Ashadha | Bhe, Bho, Ja, Ji
  9. Ashlesha | Di, Du, De, Do | Shravana | Ju, Je, Jo, Sha
  10. Magha | Ma, Mi, Mu, Me | Dhanishtha | Ga, Gi, Gu, Ge
  11. Purva Phalguni | Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu | Shatabhisha | Go, Sa, Si, Su
  12. Uttara Phalguni | Te, To, Pa, Pi | Purva Bhadrapada | Se, So, Da, Di
  13. Hasta | Pu, Sha, Na, Tha | Uttara Bhadrapada | Du, Tha, Jha, Na
  14. Revati | De, Do, Cha, Chi | |

We show the full table because a name-only tool that hides it can't be honest about the guesswork — notice how many syllables point to more than one Nakshatra.

For example, a name starting with "Ravi" would match the Ra/Ri syllables under Chitra Nakshatra. Once each partner's Nakshatra is estimated this way, the process folds back into ordinary Ashtakoot scoring: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi are each compared exactly as they would be from a full birth chart — see the Guna Milan score chart for what each koota measures and how the points are assigned.

Can You Match Kundli Only by Name?

Yes, mechanically you can — but doing so answers a different, weaker question than "are these two charts compatible."

A name only ever produces one syllable, and most syllable groups map to more than one possible name variant, spelling, or regional naming convention. There is no way for the method to distinguish "was this name chosen by Nakshatra convention" from "was this name chosen for any other reason" — and in contemporary India, most names are not chosen by Nakshatra syllable at all. The result is a Nakshatra guess, not a Nakshatra fact, and every koota score computed from it inherits that uncertainty.

The honest use case: name-based matching only when birth date, time, and place are all genuinely unrecoverable — not hospital records, not a family diary, not even a rough decade estimate. If any birth detail at all is available, matching by date of birth is meaningfully more reliable, because it derives the Nakshatra from an actual planetary position rather than a naming convention.

Kundli Matching by Name vs by Date of Birth vs Full Birth Details

The three methods differ in exactly one thing — where the Nakshatra comes from — and that single difference is what separates a rough guess from a precise chart.

Method | Where the Nakshatra comes from | Reliability

  1. By name only | A naming-syllable lookup table | Rough indicator; no dependable guna score
  2. By date of birth | The Moon's actual sidereal position for that date | Usable estimate; score can shift 2–6 gunas without the birth time
  3. Full birth details | Date + time + place → exact Nakshatra and chart | The standard for a precise 36-guna score

Name-based matching is the weakest of the three because it never touches an actual planetary position — it substitutes a cultural naming convention for astronomy. Date-of-birth matching is a genuine astronomical calculation, just missing the precision the birth time adds. Full birth details remove the guesswork entirely. If you're starting from a name and can recover even a birth year or approximate date, upgrading to the date-of-birth method is worth the extra step before treating any result as decision-grade.

Where Kundli Matching by Name Falls Short

Kundli matching by name falls short in one structural way: it estimates the input (the Nakshatra) rather than computing it, so every downstream score inherits whatever error that estimate carries.

Three practical failure points are worth naming plainly. First, spelling and transliteration — the same name can be spelled with different starting sounds across regions and scripts, changing which syllable group it falls into. Second, non-traditional naming — a growing share of names are chosen for meaning, sound, or family preference rather than Nakshatra convention, so the "correct" syllable-to-Nakshatra link the method assumes may simply not apply. Third, multiple candidate Nakshatras per syllable group — a syllable can point to more than one Nakshatra depending on how strictly the table is applied, and different sources are not always consistent about the edge cases. None of this makes the method useless for its narrow purpose; it means the result should be read as a starting point, never a verdict.

Is Kundli Matching by Name Accurate?

Kundli matching by name is accurate only to the extent that a person's name happens to reflect Nakshatra-based naming convention — which, for most contemporary names, it does not.

This is not a criticism of the classical method itself, which was designed for a naming culture where syllable convention was closely followed. The accuracy gap shows up when that convention is applied to modern names chosen for other reasons. A useful way to think about it: name-based matching tells you what Nakshatra someone's name suggests, not what Nakshatra they were born under. Those are the same thing far less often than popular kundli-matching-by-name tools imply, and no honest source can promise a name-only score carries the same weight as a birth-chart score.

How to Get a More Accurate Kundli Match

The most reliable next step after a name-based estimate is simple: replace the estimated Nakshatra with a real one, using whatever birth data can be recovered.

Start by asking family members, checking hospital or municipal birth records, or looking at any horoscope drawn up around the time of birth — even a birth year alone allows a date-based estimate, which is already more reliable than name alone. If a full date, time, and place are available, generate a free kundli matching report for an exact 36-guna Ashtakoot score with a koota-by-koota breakdown and dosha flags, computed from real planetary positions rather than any estimation method. The complete process — including Manglik checks, dosha cancellation rules, and what to ask an astrologer — is covered in the kundli matching guide.
