The 27 nakshatras divide the 360° zodiac into equal segments of 13°20′ each. At the moment of birth, the Moon occupies one of these 27 segments — that segment is the child's janma nakshatra (birth nakshatra). Each nakshatra is further divided into 4 padas (quarters), and the exact pada determines the most auspicious starting sound for the child's name.
