Each koota compares specific attributes of the Moon's Nakshatra (birth star) and Rashi (Moon sign) in both charts. The Moon is used — not the Sun sign — because in Vedic astrology the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and relationship patterns that matter most in day-to-day married life.

Traditional practice reads the total in four bands. 18 out of 36 is the accepted minimum for a workable match:

Nadi Dosha
Formed when both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya). Nadi carries 8 points — the highest weight in Ashtakoot — so a same-Nadi match scores 0 in this koota. Classical texts link Nadi to health lineage and the wellbeing of future children, which is why it gets extra attention. Cancellation applies when the partners share the same Rashi but different Nakshatras, the same Nakshatra but different Rashis, or different padas of the same Nakshatra — so a Nadi flag on a calculator is the start of the analysis, not the end of the match.
Bhakoot Dosha
Formed when the Rashi (Moon sign) positions of the partners fall in a 6-8, 9-5, or 12-2 relationship. Bhakoot carries 7 points, and a zero here is traditionally read as friction in emotional rhythm and shared finances. Cancellation is common: if both Moon signs share the same ruling planet (for example Taurus and Libra, both ruled by Venus), or the sign lords are natural friends, the dosha is considered neutralised in classical practice.
