Kundli matching by name and date of birth almost always runs on the date of birth alone — once a real birth date is available, it fixes the Nakshatra through an actual planetary calculation, and a name-based syllable guess adds nothing to the result. Most matching forms collect the name for identification and reporting, not for the score itself.

What Does "Kundli Matching by Name and Date of Birth" Actually Mean?

"Kundli matching by name and date of birth" describes the input form most matching tools show, not a third calculation method distinct from matching by name or matching by date of birth alone.

Every major matchmaking form — the ones a date-of-birth-and-name search actually surfaces — asks for both a name and a date of birth (and usually time and place) up front. That layout makes it look as though name and date of birth are two ingredients blended into one score. They are not. The kundli matching guide lays out three genuinely separate methods — by name, by date of birth, and full birth details — and this page exists to answer the question those three don't: what happens when a form collects a name and a date of birth together, and does that combination change the result.

How Do You Match Kundli by Name and Date of Birth?

You match kundli by name and date of birth by letting the date of birth drive the entire calculation — the name is recorded alongside the result, not used to compute it.

When a real date of birth is entered, a calculator built on real ephemeris data computes the Moon's sidereal position for that date, which fixes the Rashi with certainty and the Nakshatra with high confidence (see what date-of-birth-only matching gets right and where it loses precision). The standard eight Ashtakoot kootas — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi — are then scored from that Nakshatra and Rashi, exactly as they would be from a full chart. The name never enters this arithmetic. It is stored as a label: the report says "Priya and Arjun's Guna Milan score is 27/36" instead of "Person A and Person B's score is 27/36," and nothing more.

Does Providing Both Name and Date of Birth Improve Accuracy?

No — accuracy comes entirely from the date of birth (and, if provided, the time and place), and a name adds none of it, because the two fields are not combined in the scoring logic.

This is worth stating plainly because it runs against the intuition that "more information means a more accurate answer." Kundli matching is a specific exception: the classical Nakshatra-syllable method (used when matching by name alone) and the real astronomical calculation (used whenever a date of birth exists) are two independent, non-combining ways of arriving at the same input — a Nakshatra. A calculator picks whichever one it has real data for; when both a name and a date of birth are present, the date of birth wins outright, and the name-based estimate is simply never computed. Two independent estimates of the same fact do not average into a better one when only one of them is grounded in an actual planetary position.

Then Why Do Kundli Matching Forms Ask for Both Fields?

Most kundli matching forms ask for a name for identification and presentation, and only fall back to using it for estimation when the date-of-birth field is left empty.

Two real reasons explain the layout. First, a family comparing charts wants the report to read "Priya" and "Arjun," not "Chart A" and "Chart B" — the name personalises the output, and some services reuse it for a printed report header or a follow-up message. Second, a smaller set of stripped-down tools genuinely do treat the name as a fallback: if the date-of-birth field is left blank, they quietly switch to name-based Nakshatra estimation instead of asking the user to go find their real birth date. That silent substitution is worth watching for — a result computed this way carries the accuracy limits of name-based matching even though the tool never says so, and a genuine date of birth should always be preferred when it can be found.

Which Method Is Actually More Reliable — Name, Date of Birth, or Full Details?

Reliability increases from name alone, to date of birth alone, to full birth details — and adding a name to a date of birth does not move a match up that ladder; only adding real birth time and place does.

Input given | What determines the Nakshatra | Reliability

  1. Name only | A naming-syllable lookup table | Rough indicator; no dependable guna score
  2. Date of birth only | The Moon's actual sidereal position for that date | Usable estimate; score can shift 2–6 gunas on transition dates
  3. Name + date of birth | Same as date of birth alone — name is not used in scoring | Identical to date-of-birth-only; name adds no precision
  4. Full birth details (date, time, place) | Date + time + place → exact Nakshatra and chart | The standard for a precise 36-guna score

The practical takeaway: if a date of birth is already on the form, the name field is doing nothing for the score, and the productive next step toward a better result is recovering the birth time and place — not double-checking the name. See the Guna Milan score chart for how each koota reads once the Nakshatra is fixed.

Is Kundli Matching by Date of Birth and Time Different From Adding a Name?

Yes — adding a birth time (and place) genuinely changes the result, while adding a name does not, because time is the one input that resolves the specific dates a date-only estimate has to guess at.

The Moon spends a little over a day in each of the 27 Nakshatras, so a date of birth alone gets the Nakshatra right on the large majority of dates. On the roughly one-in-many dates where the Moon crosses into the next Nakshatra partway through the day, only the birth time settles which side of that transition a person falls on — the reason the date-of-birth-only method carries a real, if usually small, 2–6 guna uncertainty per the 36-guna Ashtakoot system used across the cluster. A name cannot resolve that uncertainty because it was never part of the calculation to begin with. If the goal is a more accurate score, recovering the birth time from hospital records, a family diary, or an existing horoscope is the step worth taking — not re-checking how a name is spelled.
