Kundli matching by date of birth uses the Moon's actual sidereal position for that date to estimate each partner's Rashi and Nakshatra, then scores the same eight-koota, 36-point Ashtakoot system as a full match. It's a real astronomical calculation, missing only the birth time that pins the Nakshatra down exactly.

What Is Kundli Matching by Date of Birth?

Kundli matching by date of birth is the standard Ashtakoot Milan process run with an approximate Nakshatra derived from the calendar date alone, in place of the exact Nakshatra a birth time would confirm.

The Moon travels through all 27 Nakshatras roughly once every 27.3 days (one sidereal lunar month), spending a little over a day in each one on average. Given only a date of birth, an astrology calculator can compute the Moon's sidereal longitude for that date and read off the Rashi with certainty and the Nakshatra with high — but not perfect — confidence. The eight kootas (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) are then scored exactly as they would be from a full chart; see the Guna Milan score chart for what each one measures. This is the method most people reach for when they know a partner's birthday but not the exact time — a common and reasonable situation, not a compromise to be embarrassed about.

How Do You Match Kundli With Only Date of Birth?

You match kundli with only date of birth by computing the Moon's sidereal position for that date, which fixes the Rashi and gives a high-confidence Nakshatra estimate, then running the standard Ashtakoot scoring on both partners' estimated charts.

In practice this means entering the date (and, where possible, the place of birth, since the Moon's position is essentially the same worldwide for a given date but house-based factors elsewhere in a full reading do depend on location) into a calculator built on real ephemeris data — not a name-lookup table, and not a simplified Sun-sign shortcut. The result is a genuine 36-point score with a koota-by-koota breakdown and dosha flags (Nadi, Bhakoot, Manglik), the same output format as a full birth-detail match. The one caveat, covered next, is what happens on the specific dates when the Moon's Nakshatra changes partway through the day.

What You Lose Without the Birth Time

Without the birth time, kundli matching by date of birth loses precision only on the specific dates when the Moon crosses from one Nakshatra into the next — on every other date, the date-only estimate matches the birth-time-confirmed result exactly.

The Moon moves roughly 13.2° a day — just under one Nakshatra's 13°20' width (each Nakshatra spans 13°20', since 360° ÷ 27 = 13.33°). That near-exact match means the Moon typically spends close to one full calendar day in each Nakshatra — but "close to" is not "exactly," so on some dates the Moon-to-Nakshatra transition happens mid-day. If a person was born before that transition, they're in the earlier Nakshatra; born after, the later one. Without the birth time, a calculator has to estimate which side of the transition applies, and on those specific dates it can be wrong. This is exactly why the kundli matching guide notes that a date-only score can shift by roughly 2–6 gunas compared to the birth-time-confirmed result — not because the method is flawed, but because that handful of transition dates carries genuine uncertainty that only the birth time resolves.

If your date happens to fall on a transition day, only a full read settles which Nakshatra is yours.

Do You Need the Birth Time for Kundli Matching by Date of Birth?

Strictly, no — date of birth alone is sufficient to run a real Ashtakoot estimate, and it is a meaningfully more reliable starting point than name-based matching because it is grounded in an actual planetary position rather than a naming convention.

But the birth time earns its place for a specific reason: it is the only input that resolves the Nakshatra-transition dates described above with certainty. If your birth date happens to fall on one of the roughly one-in-many transition days, the date-only estimate has to pick a side — most likely correctly, since the Moon usually spends the larger part of the day in one Nakshatra, but not with full certainty. Adding even an approximate birth time (morning, afternoon, evening — not necessarily the minute) is often enough to remove most of that ambiguity. If the exact time is truly unrecoverable, the free kundli matching report tool accepts an approximate time and clearly flags when its confidence is lower, which is a more honest approach than presenting a date-only guess as a certain result.

Reading Your Score: What 18, 24, 27, 32 Actually Mean

A date-of-birth-based Guna Milan score reads on the same four bands as a full birth-detail score — below 18 signals a closer look is needed, 18–24 is workable, 24–32 is very good, and 32–36 is excellent.

Total score | Traditional reading

  1. Below 18 | Not recommended on the score alone — a full chart analysis is essential before deciding either way
  2. 18–24 | Average / workable — the classical minimum is met; expect some friction areas worth understanding
  3. 24–32 | Very good — most compatibility dimensions align
  4. 32–36 | Excellent — rare; near-total alignment across the eight kootas

Two scores worth naming specifically, because they come up often in real searches: 27 out of 36 sits solidly in the "very good" band, well clear of any concern on the total alone. 17.5 out of 36 sits just under the classical 18-point floor — close enough that, if it came from a date-only estimate, it's worth checking whether the birth time (if recoverable) would move it across that line, since 2–6 gunas of uncertainty is exactly the range that decides a borderline case like this one. Neither score is a final verdict; both are a summary that a koota-by-koota breakdown and a check for dosha cancellations should follow.

Is Kundli Matching by Date of Birth 100% Accurate?

No — and neither is any kundli matching method, including one built from complete birth details, because Ashtakoot Milan itself is a scoring framework with acknowledged limits, not an infallible prediction system.

Within that honest framing, date-of-birth matching is accurate on the large majority of dates, where the Moon's Nakshatra for that day is unambiguous, and uncertain only on the transition dates described above. That's a materially better accuracy profile than name-based matching, which never touches an actual planetary position at all — see the comparison below. The gap between "accurate" and "100% accurate" is exactly the birth time, and it is a gap worth closing whenever the information exists to close it.

Kundli Matching by Date of Birth vs by Name vs Full Birth Details

Date-of-birth matching sits in the middle of the three methods: a real astronomical calculation like full birth-detail matching, just missing the extra precision the birth time supplies.

Method | Where the Nakshatra comes from | Reliability

  1. By name only | A naming-syllable lookup table | Rough indicator; no dependable guna score — see our kundli matching by name guide
  2. By date of birth | The Moon's actual sidereal position for that date | Usable estimate; score can shift 2–6 gunas on Nakshatra-transition dates
  3. Full birth details | Date + time + place → exact Nakshatra and chart | The standard for a precise 36-guna score

If you're starting with only a date of birth, that already puts you ahead of a name-based estimate — the practical next step, if it exists, is simply recovering the birth time from hospital records, a family diary, or an existing horoscope, and re-running the match. The full process, including Manglik checks and how to weigh a borderline score, is in the kundli matching guide.
