As of 2026, Panch Mahapurusha Yoga stands as the most specific and technically verifiable set of yogas in Vedic astrology — five distinct combinations that each require a planet to achieve maximum dignity in a position of maximum worldly strength, producing what the classical texts describe as a "great person" (Mahapurusha) of their particular planetary type. Use the birth chart calculator to see how this applies to your personal Vedic chart.
Panch Mahapurusha Yoga means "the yoga of the five great persons." Each of the five combinations is named after a different quality of greatness, and each is formed by a different planet under the same structural rule: the planet must be in its own sign or exaltation sign AND must be placed in a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th from the lagna). BPHS Chapter 75 covers all five in detail, and B.V. Raman's "Three Hundred Important Combinations" provides specific descriptions of each type's physical appearance, personality, achievements, and life trajectory. Saravali by Kalyana Varma and Phaladeepika by Mantreswara both endorse these formations as among the most important single-planet combinations in all of Vedic astrology. The Sun and Moon are excluded — their yogas are classified differently — leaving five planets: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn, each forming one type of Mahapurusha Yoga.

What is Panch Mahapurusha Yoga
> Quick Answer: Panch Mahapurusha Yoga forms when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn occupies its own sign or exaltation sign in a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th). Five types exist: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus), Shasha (Saturn). Each creates a distinctly powerful personality and life of achievement in that planet's domain. The yoga is rare because it requires both sign dignity and kendra placement simultaneously.
The word "Mahapurusha" combines "Maha" (great) and "Purusha" (person) — a great human being. Each of the five types of Mahapurusha is great in a different way, corresponding to the planet that forms the yoga. BPHS describes their physical characteristics, temperament, intellectual qualities, and material achievements with specificity that makes these among the most detailed single-yoga descriptions in all of classical Vedic astrology.
The structural requirement is elegant in its simplicity: sign dignity (own sign or exaltation) ensures the planet's maximum inherent quality, and kendra placement ensures that maximum quality is expressed in a pillar position of worldly life. A planet at peak strength in a peak position naturally produces a peak result.
The five planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) each govern a distinct domain of human excellence: 1. Mars: Physical courage, ambition, military and physical prowess 2. Mercury: Intelligence, communication, commercial and analytical skill 3. Jupiter: Wisdom, philosophy, teaching, and spiritual authority 4. Venus: Aesthetic excellence, beauty, comfort, and relational grace 5. Saturn: Discipline, endurance, structural authority, and justice
When any of these planets achieves maximum dignity in a kendra, the native expresses that planet's qualities at their highest level — becoming "great" in the domain that planet governs.
The Five Formation Rules
The universal rule for all five types:
1. The planet must be in its own sign OR its exaltation sign 2. The planet must occupy a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th from lagna) 3. The planet should be free from combustion and severe malefic affliction for maximum results
If a planet is in its own sign but in a non-kendra house (e.g., in the 2nd, 3rd, or 5th house), Panch Mahapurusha Yoga is not formed. The kendra placement is mandatory.
If a planet is in a kendra but in a neutral sign, enemy sign, or debilitation sign, the yoga is not formed. The own sign or exaltation is mandatory.
Ruchaka Yoga — Mars in Own Sign or Exaltation in Kendra
Formation: Mars in Aries (own sign), Scorpio (own sign), or Capricorn (exaltation), placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house from lagna.
Exact qualifying placements: 1. Mars in Aries in the 1st house (only for Aries lagna) 2. Mars in Aries in the 4th house (for Capricorn lagna, where Aries is the 4th sign) 3. Mars in Aries in the 7th house (for Libra lagna) 4. Mars in Aries in the 10th house (for Cancer lagna) 5. Mars in Scorpio in the 1st house (for Scorpio lagna) 6. Mars in Scorpio in the 4th house (for Leo lagna) 7. Mars in Scorpio in the 7th house (for Taurus lagna) 8. Mars in Scorpio in the 10th house (for Aquarius lagna) 9. Mars in Capricorn (exaltation) in the 1st house (for Capricorn lagna) 10. Mars in Capricorn in the 4th house (for Libra lagna) 11. Mars in Capricorn in the 7th house (for Cancer lagna) 12. Mars in Capricorn in the 10th house (for Aries lagna)
Results of Ruchaka Yoga: BPHS describes the Ruchaka native as possessing a red complexion, a powerful physique, a strong and commanding personality, and expertise in the use of weapons and instruments of power. B.V. Raman adds that the native is brave, courageous, and achieves distinction in military, police, athletic, surgical, or administrative commanding roles. The native possesses raw physical power backed by strategic intelligence. The body is strong, the will is iron, and the determination to overcome obstacles is exceptional.
Career manifestations in modern context: Military officers, police leadership, surgeons, athletes, martial arts masters, engineers, builders, and competitive business executives. Any career where direct initiative, physical capability, and competitive drive determine success.
Strength notes: Mars exalted in Capricorn is considered the strongest form of Ruchaka Yoga because exaltation exceeds even own-sign placement in power. Mars in Capricorn in the 10th house for Aries lagna (Mars exalted in the career house) is one of the most powerful individual planet placements in Vedic astrology.
Bhadra Yoga — Mercury in Own Sign or Exaltation in Kendra
Formation: Mercury in Gemini (own sign), Virgo (own sign and exaltation), placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house from lagna.
Exact qualifying placements: 1. Mercury in Gemini or Virgo in the 1st house (for Gemini or Virgo lagna respectively) 2. Mercury in Gemini in the 4th house (for Pisces lagna) 3. Mercury in Gemini in the 7th house (for Sagittarius lagna) 4. Mercury in Gemini in the 10th house (for Virgo lagna) 5. Mercury in Virgo in the 4th house (for Gemini lagna) 6. Mercury in Virgo in the 7th house (for Pisces lagna) 7. Mercury in Virgo in the 10th house (for Sagittarius lagna)
Results of Bhadra Yoga: BPHS describes the Bhadra native as having a lion-like face (strong features and commanding presence), a long life, and abilities in speech, writing, and analytical reasoning that surpass the ordinary. The native gains great reputation through intellectual work, commerce, or communication-based arts. B.V. Raman describes the native as "endowed with mercurial qualities — quick intelligence, sharp wit, and persuasive communication."
Career manifestations in modern context: Scientists, mathematicians, writers, journalists, lawyers, accountants, software developers, economists, analysts, and all careers where the quality of intellectual output determines professional standing. The Bhadra native excels in any field that rewards analytical precision and communicative skill.
Special note on Mercury in Virgo: Mercury is both in its own sign and in its exaltation in Virgo. The exaltation degree is 15° Virgo. A Bhadra Yoga formed by Mercury in Virgo (especially near 15°) in a kendra is exceptionally powerful — among the strongest single-planet configurations possible in a birth chart for intellectual and analytical gifts.
Hamsa Yoga — Jupiter in Own Sign or Exaltation in Kendra
Formation: Jupiter in Cancer (exaltation), Sagittarius (own sign), or Pisces (own sign), placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house from lagna.
Exact qualifying placements: 1. Jupiter in Cancer in the 1st house (for Cancer lagna) 2. Jupiter in Cancer in the 4th house (for Aries lagna) 3. Jupiter in Cancer in the 7th house (for Capricorn lagna) 4. Jupiter in Cancer in the 10th house (for Libra lagna) 5. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 1st house (for Sagittarius lagna) 6. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 4th house (for Virgo lagna) 7. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 7th house (for Gemini lagna) 8. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 10th house (for Pisces lagna) 9. Jupiter in Pisces in the 1st house (for Pisces lagna) 10. Jupiter in Pisces in the 4th house (for Sagittarius lagna) 11. Jupiter in Pisces in the 7th house (for Virgo lagna) 12. Jupiter in Pisces in the 10th house (for Gemini lagna)
Results of Hamsa Yoga: BPHS describes the Hamsa (swan) native as righteous, morally upright, attractive, and endowed with a resonant voice and deep wisdom. The native gains fame and respect in religious, philosophical, legal, or educational spheres. B.V. Raman emphasizes the native's magnanimous character, genuine devotion, and ability to inspire and teach others. The "hamsa" (swan) symbolizes discrimination — the ability to separate truth from falsehood, wisdom from ignorance.
Career manifestations in modern context: Religious and spiritual leaders, philosophers, university professors, judges, lawyers, philanthropists, institutional founders, spiritual teachers, and all who achieve greatness through the quality of their wisdom and moral character. The Hamsa native is respected not just for accomplishment but for character.
Special note: Jupiter exalted in Cancer in the 4th house (for Aries lagna) simultaneously creates a powerful Gajakesari Yoga if this Jupiter is also in a kendra from the Moon. The double-yoga effect — Gajakesari Yoga plus Hamsa Yoga — is one of the most celebrated configurations in classical Vedic astrology.
Malavya Yoga — Venus in Own Sign or Exaltation in Kendra
Formation: Venus in Taurus (own sign), Libra (own sign), or Pisces (exaltation), placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house from lagna.
Exact qualifying placements: 1. Venus in Taurus in the 1st house (for Taurus lagna) 2. Venus in Taurus in the 4th house (for Aquarius lagna) 3. Venus in Taurus in the 7th house (for Scorpio lagna) 4. Venus in Taurus in the 10th house (for Leo lagna) 5. Venus in Libra in the 1st house (for Libra lagna) 6. Venus in Libra in the 4th house (for Cancer lagna) 7. Venus in Libra in the 7th house (for Aries lagna) 8. Venus in Libra in the 10th house (for Capricorn lagna) 9. Venus in Pisces (exaltation) in the 1st house (for Pisces lagna) 10. Venus in Pisces in the 4th house (for Sagittarius lagna) 11. Venus in Pisces in the 7th house (for Virgo lagna) 12. Venus in Pisces in the 10th house (for Gemini lagna)
Results of Malavya Yoga: BPHS describes the Malavya native as beautiful, magnetic, possessing lustrous eyes, a charming personality, and an ability to accumulate wealth and surround themselves with comfort and beauty. The native is fortunate in love and partnership, lives a life of material abundance, and possesses refined tastes. B.V. Raman adds that the native is respected for their elegance, their creative or artistic achievements, and their natural magnetism that attracts people, resources, and opportunities.
Career manifestations in modern context: Artists, designers, musicians, actors, fashion professionals, luxury goods and hospitality industry leaders, diplomats, relationship counselors, and all careers where aesthetic sensitivity, personal charm, and the ability to create or mediate beautiful experiences are the primary professional qualities.
Special note: Malavya Yoga Venus simultaneously fulfills the Venus condition for Lakshmi Yoga when Venus is also the 9th lord for the ascendant. For Virgo lagna (where Venus rules the 2nd and 9th) with Venus in Pisces in the 7th, both Malavya Yoga and Lakshmi Yoga are simultaneously formed.
Shasha Yoga — Saturn in Own Sign or Exaltation in Kendra
Formation: Saturn in Capricorn (own sign), Aquarius (own sign), or Libra (exaltation), placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house from lagna.
Exact qualifying placements: 1. Saturn in Capricorn in the 1st house (for Capricorn lagna) 2. Saturn in Capricorn in the 4th house (for Libra lagna) 3. Saturn in Capricorn in the 7th house (for Cancer lagna) 4. Saturn in Capricorn in the 10th house (for Aries lagna) 5. Saturn in Aquarius in the 1st house (for Aquarius lagna) 6. Saturn in Aquarius in the 4th house (for Scorpio lagna) 7. Saturn in Aquarius in the 7th house (for Leo lagna) 8. Saturn in Aquarius in the 10th house (for Taurus lagna) 9. Saturn in Libra (exaltation) in the 1st house (for Libra lagna) 10. Saturn in Libra in the 4th house (for Cancer lagna) 11. Saturn in Libra in the 7th house (for Aries lagna) 12. Saturn in Libra in the 10th house (for Capricorn lagna)
Results of Shasha Yoga: BPHS describes the Shasha (hare or rabbit — symbolizing swift, clever movement) native as a leader of people, a person who commands armies or governments, someone who gains authority over servants and subordinates, and who possesses endurance and discipline that outlasts all competitors. B.V. Raman notes the native's aptitude for governance, administration, mining, oil, agriculture, labor management, and all fields where Saturn's endurance and structural authority are decisive.
Career manifestations in modern context: Administrators, government officials, judges, miners, engineers, researchers in applied sciences, agricultural leaders, real estate developers, political leaders focused on systems and governance, social reformers, and all who achieve greatness through patient, persistent, structural effort over long time periods.
Special note: Saturn exalted in Libra in the 10th house (for Capricorn lagna — Saturn exalted in the 10th, with Capricorn being Saturn's own sign) is one of the most powerful single planetary placements for career authority in Vedic astrology. The Shasha Yoga in this configuration is maximally powerful.
How Many People Actually Have This Yoga
Panch Mahapurusha Yoga is frequently cited but genuinely rare. Here is why:
Probability analysis: Each planet occupies a particular sign for a specific duration. Mars, Mercury, and Venus spend approximately one to two months in a sign; Jupiter approximately one year; Saturn approximately two and a half years. For each planet, two or three signs qualify for the yoga (own signs and exaltation). Out of 12 signs, approximately 2-3 qualify, giving a rough 17-25% chance of a planet being in a qualifying sign at birth.
However, even when a planet is in a qualifying sign, it must also be in a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) — 4 out of 12 houses, a 33% probability. For both conditions to be met simultaneously: approximately 17-25% × 33% = roughly 6-8% probability per yoga type.
But this assumes random distribution. In practice, the lagna rises approximately uniformly, and the planet's position is independent of the lagna. For any given birth chart, the probability of a specific Panch Mahapurusha Yoga being present is roughly 6-10% per yoga type.
Multiple yogas are rarer: Having two Panch Mahapurusha Yogas simultaneously requires both conditions to be independently met for two different planets — roughly 6% × 6% = less than 1% for any given pair. Charts with three or more simultaneously are genuinely rare.
Combustion and affliction further reduce operative yogas: Mercury's frequent combustion eliminates many potential Bhadra Yogas. The Sun's position therefore limits the number of actually-operative Bhadra Yoga charts. Venus similarly can be combust. These practical limitations reduce the number of strong, operative Panch Mahapurusha Yogas below the theoretical probability.
Famous Examples
B.V. Raman's "Three Hundred Important Combinations" presents specific charts demonstrating each type of Panch Mahapurusha Yoga in operation. The classical literature consistently notes that these yogas manifest in different ways depending on the civilization and era — in ancient India, kingly and martial results; in the modern era, equivalent achievements in business, academia, arts, and governance.
The physical descriptions in BPHS (long arms for Hamsa, strong physique for Ruchaka, lion-like features for Bhadra, beautiful eyes for Malavya, prominent physique for Shasha) are traditional indicators that classical astrologers used alongside chart examination.
Check your birth chart to determine which of the five Panch Mahapurusha Yogas are present in your horoscope. To understand how these yogas interact with other powerful combinations like Raj Yoga, examine whether the Mahapurusha planet also participates in kendra-trikona lord connections — when it does, the two yogas reinforce each other powerfully.
