The Purpose of Quick-Answer Methods in Prashna

> Prashna is designed for clear, direct answers. The question chart contains everything needed to respond with YES or NO — and the querent came for that answer, not a lengthy exposition of competing factors. These five methods provide a structured, reproducible way to reach a direct answer from any Prashna chart, progressing from the most classical to the most technically precise.

A Prashna reading can go deep — analyzing every planet's dignities, all applying aspects, Panchang details, nakshatra meanings, and divisional charts. Expert practitioners do this for complex questions involving multiple competing interests. But for a clear, specific question where the querent needs a decision-support answer, five proven methods cover the full range from quick intuitive reads to precise sub-lord analysis.

Each method described below is internally complete. Use one method as your primary approach and another as confirmation. When two or more methods agree, the answer is reliable. When they diverge, investigate which factor — usually the Moon's applying aspect or the relevant house lord's condition — tips the balance.

The reading the querent's chart guide covers the foundational chart setup this guide assumes. The birth chart calculator generates the chart with all necessary data.

Method 1: The Moon-Benefic/Malefic Rule

The Most Classical Quick-Answer Method

> If the Moon in the Prashna chart is applying (moving toward) a natural benefic planet — Jupiter, Venus, or unafflicted waxing Moon itself as a light — the answer is YES. If the Moon is applying to a natural malefic — Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, or the afflicted Sun — the answer is NO or the path to the answer involves significant difficulty.

This is the oldest, simplest, and most widely cited quick-answer rule in Prashna tradition. Prashna Marga repeats variations of it throughout its text. The Moon's next applying aspect is the "direction" the matter is heading. What the Moon moves toward, the situation moves toward.

How to apply it:

Step 1: Find the Moon's current degree in the Prashna chart.

Step 2: Identify which planet the Moon will contact next. In Vedic astrology, the Moon aspects the 7th house from its position as its primary aspect. Conjunctions and the special aspects (Mars's 4th/7th/8th aspect, Jupiter's 5th/7th/9th, Saturn's 3rd/7th/10th) are checked. For applying aspect purposes, use degree-based proximity — the Moon is applying to whichever planet it will reach first by degree.

Step 3: Assess that planet's natural quality:

  • Natural benefics: Jupiter, Venus, unafflicted Mercury (Mercury is neutral-benefic when well-placed), waxing Moon
  • Natural malefics: Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun (though Sun is a mild malefic in classical lists, its combustion effect on Moon is primary)

Step 4: Moon applying to a natural benefic = YES. Moon applying to a natural malefic = NO or delayed/difficult path to YES.

Refinements:

  • If the Moon applies first to a malefic and then to a benefic, it passes through difficulty before reaching success — a YES with obstacles.
  • If the Moon has already made its last aspect in the current sign and will change signs without another aspect, the matter does not conclude cleanly (equivalent to void-of-course Moon caution).
  • Moon in Shukla Paksha (waxing) amplifies the positive; Moon in Krishna Paksha (waning) dampens it.

Best for: General questions where no specific house analysis has been performed yet. This method works as a two-minute first assessment for any question.

Method 2: Lagna Strength Rule

Assess the Querent's Position

> If the Prashna Lagna has a benefic planet occupying it, or if the Lagna lord is placed in an angle (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trine (5th, 9th) and is dignified, the querent is in a position of strength — the answer leans YES. If the Lagna has a malefic occupying it without benefic aspect, or the Lagna lord is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th, the querent faces obstacles from their own position — the answer leans NO or the situation is against them.

This method answers a specific sub-question before the main question: Does the querent have the capacity and circumstantial support to achieve what they are asking about? A person in a weak position cannot achieve even what seems within reach. A person in a strong position can overcome obstacles that appear formidable.

How to apply it:

Step 1: Note the rising sign (Prashna Lagna).

Step 2: Check for planets in the 1st house. Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, unafflicted Mercury) in Lagna = positive. Malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) in Lagna without benefic aspect = negative. Sun in Lagna is neutral to mildly challenging depending on context.

Step 3: Find the Lagna lord (the planet ruling the rising sign). Check its house placement.

Lagna lord placements — quick reference:

  • In 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th = querent is strong — YES lean
  • In 2nd = financial focus, neutral
  • In 3rd = moderate, effort required
  • In 6th = querent is in difficulty or conflict — NO lean
  • In 8th = querent faces hidden problems or crisis — NO lean
  • In 12th = querent is losing ground, resources dissolving — NO lean

Step 4: Check whether the Lagna lord is dignified (own sign, exaltation, friendly sign) or debilitated/combust.

Best for: Questions where the querent's own position or health is the subject (e.g., "Will I be able to handle this challenge?" "Will my financial situation improve?"). Also useful as a confirming second check after Method 1.

Method 3: Relevant House Lord Rule

The Most Accurate Method for Specific Questions

> Identify the house governing the question. Assess the strength and placement of that house's lord. If the house lord is strong, well-dignified, and in a favorable house — the answer is YES for that specific matter. If the house lord is weak, debilitated, combust, or placed in a dusthana (6th, 8th, or 12th) — the answer is NO or severely obstructed for that matter.

This method is the most question-specific and the most accurate for defined questions with a clear house correspondence. It requires one additional step — identifying the correct house for the question — but delivers the most targeted answer.

House-question correspondence (quick reference):

  • Career/job = 10th house lord
  • Marriage/partnership = 7th house lord
  • Children = 5th house lord
  • Property/home = 4th house lord
  • Money/wealth = 2nd and 11th house lords
  • Health recovery = 1st and 11th house lords (versus 6th as the disease lord)
  • Travel (short) = 3rd house lord
  • Travel (long/foreign) = 9th house lord
  • Education (competitive exam) = 5th house lord
  • Education (higher degree) = 9th house lord
  • Legal dispute outcome = 6th house lord (querens winning) versus relevant opponent's signification
  • Loan/borrowed money = 8th house lord (others' money)

How to apply it:

Step 1: Identify the question's primary house.

Step 2: Find the lord of that house.

Step 3: Assess its placement:

  • In kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (5th, 9th) = strong, capable of delivering
  • In 11th = excellent, directly indicating fulfillment
  • In 6th = obstructed by disputes or opposition
  • In 8th = hidden, delayed, potentially dangerous
  • In 12th = dissolving, lost, the matter fades

Step 4: Assess the lord's dignity — exaltation, own sign, or debilitation.

Step 5: Check whether the Moon is applying to this house lord. Moon applying to the relevant house lord = the querent's mind is moving toward the matter's resolution, confirming YES.

Best for: Any specific question where the querent wants an answer about a defined life matter (job, marriage, child, property). This is the workhorse method of classical Prashna interpretation and the one Prashna Marga relies on most heavily.

Method 4: Benefic/Malefic Planet Count

The Broad Overview Method

> Count how many planets in the Prashna chart occupy benefic houses (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th) versus malefic houses (3rd, 6th, 8th, 12th). A majority of planets in benefic houses gives a YES-leaning overall chart. A majority in malefic houses gives a NO-leaning chart. This is a rapid contextual assessment, not a detailed analysis.

This method provides a macro-level sense of the chart's overall quality before specific house analysis. It answers: is this chart generally positive or generally difficult?

How to apply it:

Step 1: List all 9 planets and their house positions.

Step 2: Count planets in benefic houses:

  • Benefic houses: 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th
  • Total planets possible: 9

Step 3: Count planets in malefic/dusthana houses:

  • Malefic houses: 3rd, 6th, 8th, 12th
  • (3rd is an upachaya house and mildly difficult rather than severely malefic — weight it less)

Step 4: If 5 or more planets are in benefic houses = overall YES lean. If 5 or more are in dusthana houses = overall NO lean.

Important notes about this method:

  • This is a rough method and should not stand alone. A single heavily significant planet (Jupiter in the 8th as a Lagna lord, for example) in a malefic house may be more important than four minor planets in benefic houses.
  • The method is best used as a quick overview at the start of reading, before more detailed analysis.
  • When this method and Method 3 (relevant house lord) agree, confidence increases. When they diverge, go with Method 3 for the specific question at hand.

Best for: Quick first impressions before a detailed reading. Also useful for complex charts where multiple questions are intertwined and a general quality assessment is needed before unpacking specific matters.

Method 5: KP Sub-Lord Method

The Most Precise Modern Method

> In KP Prashna, find the sub-lord of the relevant house cusp. If that sub-lord signifies the 11th house and the relevant house itself among its house connections — the answer is YES. If the sub-lord predominantly signifies the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses — the answer is NO. The sub-lord method eliminates interpretive ambiguity by reducing the judgment to a traceable planetary chain.

The KP method was developed by K.S. Krishnamurti (1908–1972) and applies sub-lord theory — a division of each nakshatra into nine sub-parts using Vimshottari dasha proportions — to determine house outcomes. The sub-lord of any house cusp is the decisive planetary indicator for that house's promise.

How to apply it:

Step 1: Cast the Prashna chart using Placidus house cusps and Lahiri sidereal zodiac (standard KP settings).

Step 2: Identify the relevant house for the question (same correspondence as Method 3).

Step 3: Note the exact degree of that house's cusp.

Step 4: Using KP sub-lord tables (available in dedicated KP software), find the sub-lord of that cusp degree.

Step 5: Determine the sub-lord's house significations:

  • Which house does it occupy?
  • Which houses does it own (rule)?
  • Which houses are signified through its nakshatra lord's connections?

Step 6: Apply the YES/NO rule:

  • Sub-lord signifies houses 1, 5, 9, 11 in relation to the matter = YES
  • Sub-lord signifies houses 6, 8, 12 prominently = NO
  • The 11th house signification is essential for YES — without it, even a positive chart may not fulfill

Step 7: Confirm with Moon's nakshatra lord and sub-lord. If the Moon's indicators align with the cusp sub-lord's message, confidence in the answer increases.

Weighing the significations: A sub-lord signifies many houses through the four channels (occupation, ownership, nakshatra lord's planets). Weight the significations by strength — direct occupation and own-sign rulership are stronger than nakshatra lord's indirect connections.

Best for: Practitioners trained in KP who want binary precision. Also useful when classical methods give ambiguous results — the KP sub-lord often resolves the ambiguity by identifying the decisive planetary indicator clearly.

Combining the Five Methods

In professional practice, these methods work together:

Quick two-minute read: Method 1 (Moon's applying aspect) + Method 4 (planet count) = general YES/NO with a quality sense.

Standard reading: Method 3 (relevant house lord) + Method 1 (Moon applying to that lord) = the classical Prashna core answer.

Confirmation read: Methods 2 (Lagna strength) + 3 (relevant house lord) = querent's capacity + matter's direct indicator.

Full KP reading: Method 5 (sub-lord) + Method 1 (Moon's direction) = KP primary + classical Moon confirmation.

When three or more methods point the same direction, deliver the answer directly and with confidence. The Prashna tradition does not favor hedging — a chart gives an answer, and the astrologer's job is to communicate it clearly.
