What Is a Prashna Chart and Why It Works

> A Prashna chart is a horoscope cast for the precise moment a sincere question reaches the astrologer. The planets at that instant reflect the querent's situation, the nature of the obstacle, and whether the matter will resolve favorably. Every factor needed to answer the question is contained within that single chart.

Prashna translates from Sanskrit as "question." The entire method rests on the Vedic principle that time is not neutral — every moment carries a unique cosmic signature. When a genuine question arises in the mind, the sky overhead encodes the answer. The astrologer's task is to decode it correctly.

The classical text governing Prashna is Prashna Marga, written in Kerala in the 16th century by Neelakantha. Earlier references appear in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), where Sage Parashara devotes several chapters to question-based readings. B.V. Raman, the 20th-century master, also documented Prashna cases in his writings, validating the method against real outcomes.

For a beginner, the greatest advantage of Prashna is independence from birth data. You do not need an accurate birth time to practice it. All you need is the moment of the question. This makes Prashna immediately practical.

Before reading any chart, understand the core framework. The Prashna Kundli system establishes that the Lagna (Ascendant) represents the querent, the Moon represents their mind, and the relevant house represents the subject of the question. This three-pillar structure guides every step below.

---

Step 1: Cast the Chart at the Exact Moment of the Question

The first and most important act in Prashna is precision in time. The chart is cast for the moment the astrologer comprehends the question — not when the client thought about asking, not when they sent a message, but when the astrologer reads, hears, and understands the question.

For in-person consultations, note the clock time the moment the question is verbally completed. For written queries (email, chat), note the time you finish reading and grasping the full intent of the question.

Record three pieces of data: 1. Date (day, month, year) 2. Time (hour and minute — seconds add precision but are not essential) 3. Location (the astrologer's current location in traditional Prashna practice)

Use any standard Vedic astrology software to generate the chart. Jagannatha Hora (free), Astrosage, and Kala are widely used. Enter the data using the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsha is most common in India). Set the house system to equal houses or Parashari whole-sign for traditional Prashna, or Placidus if you follow the KP system.

You can also use AstroSight's birth chart calculator to generate a Vedic chart quickly with the correct settings.

---

Step 2: Identify the Prashna Lagna

Once the chart is in front of you, locate the Prashna Lagna — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the question moment.

Note three things immediately:

The rising sign itself. Each sign carries qualities. Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) suggest change and movement. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) indicate stability or stubbornness in the situation. Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) suggest mixed or changing outcomes.

The Lagna lord. This is the planet that rules the rising sign. Aries rising = Mars is Lagna lord. Taurus rising = Venus is Lagna lord. Gemini rising = Mercury. Cancer = Moon. Leo = Sun. Virgo = Mercury. Libra = Venus. Scorpio = Mars (classical) or Mars/Ketu. Sagittarius = Jupiter. Capricorn = Saturn. Aquarius = Saturn. Pisces = Jupiter.

Where the Lagna lord is placed. A Lagna lord in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house (kendras) gives the querent strength and the ability to act. A Lagna lord in the 5th, 9th, or 11th gives favorable conditions. A Lagna lord in the 6th, 8th, or 12th places the querent in a difficult position — facing obstacles, hidden problems, or loss.

A strong Lagna and Lagna lord = the querent has initiative and the situation is within their control. A weak Lagna = the querent faces resistance they cannot easily overcome.

---

Step 3: Find the Moon and Assess Its Position

The Moon is the second pillar of Prashna analysis. In Prashna Marga, the Moon receives more interpretive weight than any other planet in most question types.

Locate the Moon in the chart. Note:

Its house placement. Moon in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th = strong, foundational position. Moon in the 11th = direct indicator of fulfillment. Moon in the 6th = disputes and obstacles. Moon in the 8th = serious difficulty or hidden problems. Moon in the 12th = loss, dissolution, or the matter fading away.

Its nakshatra. The 27 nakshatras add detail. A Moon in Rohini (Taurus) indicates stability and comfort. Moon in Ardra (Gemini) indicates turbulence. Moon in Pushya (Cancer) indicates nourishment and support from institutions or elders. The nakshatra lord becomes an important sub-significator.

Its applying aspects. This is the most important Moon observation. Note which planets the Moon is moving toward (applying) based on degree. Moon applying to Jupiter = blessings and positive outcome. Moon applying to Venus = comfort, pleasure, and success in relationships. Moon applying to Mercury = communication, contracts, and intellectual matters resolve well. Moon applying to Saturn = delays, hardship, or a protracted outcome. Moon applying to Mars = conflict, urgency, or injury. Moon applying to Rahu = confusion, foreign elements, or unpredictable twists.

Its phase. A waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha, days 1–15 of the lunar month) carries growing energy and is favorable for new ventures and achievement. A waning Moon (Krishna Paksha, days 16–30) carries dissolving energy and counsels caution for new undertakings.

Step 4: Identify the Relevant House for the Question

Every question maps to a specific house in Vedic astrology. Before analyzing the chart further, determine which house governs the querent's subject matter:

  • 1st house: Self, health, general wellbeing, appearance
  • 2nd house: Money, savings, possessions, family speech
  • 3rd house: Short journeys, siblings, communication, courage
  • 4th house: Property, home, mother, vehicles, peace of mind
  • 5th house: Children, romance, education, speculation, creativity
  • 6th house: Disputes, litigation, health issues (chronic), employment as a service
  • 7th house: Marriage, romantic partnerships, business partnerships
  • 8th house: Longevity, hidden matters, others' money, transformation
  • 9th house: Long journeys, higher education, luck, religion, father
  • 10th house: Career, profession, public life, authority
  • 11th house: Gains, desires fulfilled, elder siblings, social networks
  • 12th house: Losses, foreign lands, spirituality, hospitalization

A question about "Will I get this job?" = 10th house primary, 11th house for success. A question about "Will my marriage happen soon?" = 7th house. "Will I recover from this illness?" = 1st and 11th house (recovery) versus 6th and 8th (illness persistence).

---

Step 5: Assess the Relevant House

Once you identify the house, examine it in detail.

Planets in the house: Benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, unafflicted Mercury, waxing Moon) occupying the relevant house strengthen its promise. Malefic planets (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun when afflicted) occupying it create obstacles or complications.

The house lord's placement: Where is the lord of the relevant house sitting? A 10th house question with the 10th lord in the 10th, 1st, 5th, 9th, or 11th = favorable career answer. A 10th lord sitting in the 6th, 8th, or 12th = the career matter faces serious obstacles.

Aspects on the relevant house: Are benefics aspecting this house from other positions? Jupiter's 5th, 7th, and 9th aspect is considered blessing. Saturn's 3rd, 7th, and 10th aspect creates restriction. Mars's 4th, 7th, and 8th aspect creates urgency or conflict.

---

Step 6: Check the Moon's Application to the Relevant House Lord

This is the single most important classical indicator in Prashna.

After identifying the relevant house lord (e.g., Jupiter for the 9th house if Aries rises and the 9th is Sagittarius), check whether the Moon is applying (moving toward) that planet based on current degrees.

Moon applying to the relevant house lord = the querent's mind is moving toward the matter's resolution. This is a YES indicator.

Moon separating from the relevant house lord (already past it) = the mind is moving away. This is a NO or "already past" indicator.

Moon applying to a malefic before reaching the relevant house lord = an obstacle stands between the querent and the outcome.

Prashna Marga places this principle at the center of all Prashna interpretation. B.V. Raman echoed this in his writings on question charts, calling the Moon-house lord relationship the "connecting thread" of the reading.

---

Step 7: Assess the 11th House and the Dusthana Houses

The 11th house is the house of fulfillment — gains achieved, desires realized. In any Prashna chart, a strong 11th house and 11th lord = the matter comes to a positive conclusion.

Check the 11th house for:

  • Benefic planets occupying it
  • Its lord's placement in a favorable house
  • Connections between the relevant house lord and the 11th lord

The dusthana houses — 6th, 8th, and 12th — are the houses of obstacles (6th), hidden danger or transformation (8th), and loss or dissolution (12th). When the relevant house lord, Lagna lord, or Moon has strong connections to these houses, the outcome faces resistance.

A 6th house connection = conflict, delay, or a rival blocking the path. An 8th house connection = hidden problems, unexpected events, or the matter goes underground. A 12th house connection = the matter dissolves, money is lost, or the person moves away from the situation.

---

Step 8: Formulate the Answer

With all the above observations, construct a clear, direct answer.

Favorable answer (YES): Relevant house lord is strong (own sign, exaltation, angular), Moon is applying to it, 11th house is occupied by a benefic or its lord is well-placed, Lagna is strong with no severe malefic affliction.

Unfavorable answer (NO): Relevant house lord is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th, Moon is separating from it or applying to a malefic, Lagna lord is weak, 12th house connections dominate.

Conditional or delayed answer: Mixed indicators — some favorable, some not. The matter may resolve after obstacles or after a period of time indicated by the Moon's remaining degrees in its current sign.

---

Common Beginner Mistakes in Prashna

Mistake 1: Approximate time. Prashna requires precision. A five-minute error shifts the Ascendant in fast-moving signs like Cancer or Scorpio. Always note the exact minute.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the Moon's direction. Beginners often assess Moon's house placement without noting whether it is applying or separating. The applying relationship is more predictive than static position.

Mistake 3: Analyzing too many factors. Beginners sometimes bring in dasha, transit, and divisional charts from the querent's natal chart. In Prashna, the question chart is self-contained. Use it alone first.

Mistake 4: Answering without identifying the house. Jumping to Moon analysis without first determining which house governs the question creates confusion. Always establish the relevant house first.

Mistake 5: Emotional bias. The astrologer's own wish for the querent to succeed can color interpretation. Apply the classical rules neutrally, then communicate the answer directly.
