The foundation of this principle is simple: Prashna begins with the mind. A question is a mental act. The Moon governs the mind (manas) in Vedic astrology without exception. When a question crystallizes with enough urgency to reach an astrologer, the Moon at that moment carries the full weight of the querent's intent.

Prashna Marga — the 16th-century Kerala text that is the definitive classical source on Prashna — dedicates more analytical attention to the Moon than to any other planet. For most question types, Moon in the 1st is a strong YES-leaning indicator, provided the Moon itself is not afflicted.

Moon in the 4th house: The Moon in the 4th indicates peace of mind, domestic stability, and a supported environment. The querent's foundation is secure. This is favorable for questions about property, home, and family, and generally supportive for other question types.

Moon in the 7th house: The 7th house represents the other party — the partner, the counterpart, the second person in any arrangement. Moon in the 7th puts the querent's mind on the partner. For marriage and relationship questions, this is a very positive indicator. For business questions, it shows the querent is aware of and engaged with the counterpart.

Moon in the 10th house: The 10th governs career, public life, and authority. Moon in the 10th shows the querent's mind is on professional matters. For career questions, this is strongly supportive.

Moon in the 2nd house: The 2nd governs wealth and family. Moon here shows the querent's mind is on financial or family matters — often a positive indicator for financial questions, neutral to positive for others.

Moon in the 5th house: Favorable — the 5th governs intelligence, creativity, and children. Moon here shows a constructive, creative mental state.

Moon in the 9th house: Favorable — the 9th governs luck, fortune, and higher wisdom. Moon in the 9th is a naturally fortunate placement indicating good karma supporting the matter.

Moon in the 11th house: Excellent. The 11th is the house of gains and fulfillment. Moon in the 11th is a direct indicator of success — the querent's mind is already at the place of fulfillment. This placement, when combined with a well-placed relevant house lord, is nearly conclusive for a YES answer.

Moon in the 3rd house: Neutral to slightly positive — the 3rd is an upachaya (growth) house. Moon here indicates communication and short-journey matters are prominent, with gradually improving conditions.

Moon in the 6th house: Cautionary. The 6th governs disputes, illness, and obstacles. Moon in the 6th means the querent is mentally in a state of conflict or physical difficulty. The matter faces active resistance. This does not automatically give a NO, but the obstacles are real and present.

Moon applying to Jupiter: The most favorable indicator in Prashna. Jupiter represents wisdom, grace, divine support, and abundance. A Moon moving toward Jupiter says the situation is being guided toward a beneficial resolution. For almost any question, Moon applying to Jupiter is a YES with positive circumstances.

Moon applying to Venus: Favorable. Venus represents comfort, relationship harmony, and material satisfaction. Moon applying to Venus is favorable for relationship questions, financial questions about comfort and luxury, and any matter where social grace and agreement play a role.

Moon applying to Mercury (unafflicted): Generally favorable. Mercury represents communication, contracts, and intellectual clarity. Moon applying to Mercury supports questions about negotiations, travel, and educational matters.

Moon applying to Saturn: A serious indicator of delay and hardship. Saturn slows, restricts, and demands persistence. When the Moon applies to Saturn, the matter eventually resolves — Saturn does not destroy, but it makes the path long and difficult. The querent will reach the outcome through sustained effort and patience.

Moon applying to Mars: Conflict, urgency, and possible accidents or injuries. Moon applying to Mars indicates the situation contains aggression, haste, or physical tension. For matters where competition is involved, it may mean the querent fights hard. For matters of peace and harmony (marriage, health), it is a warning of coming conflict.

Moon applying to Rahu: Confusion, foreign elements, unusual circumstances, and unpredictable developments. Moon applying to Rahu often indicates the situation contains hidden players, deception, or a foreign dimension the querent has not fully accounted for. The outcome is less certain than other applications.

Moon applying to Ketu: Ketu indicates loss of attachment, spiritual direction away from material goals, and sudden unexpected endings. Moon applying to Ketu in a material question (job, money, property) often gives a negative answer — the matter dissolves or the querent loses interest before achieving the goal.

Moon applying to Sun: Combustion territory. When the Moon moves toward the Sun, it approaches combustion (the Moon within 12° of the Sun is considered weak to combust). A Moon applying to the Sun in a Prashna chart indicates the querent's mental clarity may be overwhelmed by external authority, ego conflicts, or the situation being too close to a powerful center of pressure.

Specific phase notes: 1. Purnima (Full Moon): Maximum lunar energy, but also maximum tension between Sun and Moon (they are in opposition). Full Moon in Prashna can indicate a situation at its peak — a critical juncture. Outcomes crystallize clearly. 2. Amavasya (New Moon): The Moon is invisible and combust. Moon within 12° of the Sun is considered weak and under pressure. Prashna charts cast near Amavasya have a weakened Moon indicator, requiring heavier reliance on the Lagna and relevant house lord for analysis. 3. Krishna Paksha 8th Tithi (Ashtami) and 14th Tithi (Chaturdashi): Classical texts note these as days requiring particular care in question-chart interpretation.
