India sees approximately 8–10 million marriages per year (Census of India 2021 projections), and kundali matching remains a central step in most arranged marriage processes. A range of online Jyotish services—including OnlineJyotish, AstroSage, mpanchang, and others—now make the 36-guna Ashtakuta calculation available within seconds. This guide explains how these services work, what distinguishes an accurate one, and what no algorithm can replace.

What Is Online Kundali Matching and How Does It Work?

Kundali matching (also called guna milan or kundali milan) is a Vedic astrology method for assessing compatibility between two birth charts before marriage. The process begins with the birth details of both partners—date, time, and place of birth—and uses those details to calculate the Moon's nakshatra (lunar mansion) at the moment of each birth.

The primary matching system used across India is the Ashtakuta system, which compares 8 specific compatibility factors (called kootas) and assigns points to each based on how well the two nakshatras align. The total possible score is 36 points.

Online Jyotish services automate this calculation using algorithms built on the classical rules from Parashara Hora Shastra. You enter birth details, the platform calculates both partners' Moon nakshatras, maps them to the 8 kootas, scores each koota, and produces a total.

The 8 kootas and their maximum scores are:

| Koota | Evaluates | Max Points | |-------|-----------|------------| | Varna | Spiritual compatibility | 1 | | Vashya | Dominance and cooperation | 2 | | Tara | Birth star compatibility | 3 | | Yoni | Biological (physical) compatibility | 4 | | Graha Maitri | Planetary friendship (mental harmony) | 5 | | Gana | Temperament (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa) | 6 | | Bhakoot | Family welfare, finances | 7 | | Nadi | Health and progeny | 8 |

Source: Parashara Hora Shastra, Chapters 73–74

Nadi koota carries the highest weight at 8 points—22% of the total score—because it addresses the most fundamental biological and karmic compatibility between partners.

What Is the Ashtakuta System Used by Kundali Matching Services?

The Ashtakuta system divides the 27 nakshatras into groups based on each of the 8 compatibility dimensions. For example:

Nadi koota divides all 27 nakshatras into three groups of nine:

  • Adi nadi (first wind): Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
  • Madhya nadi (middle wind): Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada
  • Antya nadi (final wind): Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

If both partners belong to the same nadi group, Nadi dosha is present and 0 points are awarded. If their nadi groups differ, full 8 points are awarded. This binary scoring makes Nadi koota the most decisive single factor in the system.

Gana koota divides nakshatras into three temperamental groups—Deva (godly, 9 nakshatras), Manushya (human, 9 nakshatras), and Rakshasa (assertive, 9 nakshatras). Deva–Deva and Manushya–Manushya combinations score 6; cross-gana combinations score lower and can indicate temperamental friction.

The minimum total for a recommended match is 18 gunas out of 36. Between 18–24 is acceptable with Vastu and astrological remedies; 24–32 is good; above 32 is considered excellent and rare.

How Accurate Are Online Kundali Matching Services?

The Ashtakuta calculation itself is mathematically precise—if you enter correct birth data and the platform uses Lahiri ayanamsha (the standard sidereal calculation adopted by the Indian government), the guna score will be the same across all competent platforms.

Where platforms diverge is in their treatment of:

1. Bhanga conditions. The Parashara Hora Shastra lists exceptions that cancel Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha even when the nakshatra pairing is unfavourable. Fewer than half of online platforms implement all five Nadi Bhanga conditions correctly.

2. Manglik assessment. Manglik dosha (Mars placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant, Moon, or Venus) affects roughly 20–30% of the population. Some platforms check from only one reference point (Ascendant), missing Mars placements from the Moon and Venus.

3. Full chart analysis. The Ashtakuta system uses only the Moon nakshatra. A complete compatibility reading also examines the Navamsha (D9) chart for each partner, the 7th house and its lord in both charts, Venus placement, and current Dasha periods.

For a deeper understanding of how the nakshatra-level matching integrates with the full birth chart, see our guide to Nadi astrology matching process, which explains the 27-nakshatra Nadi framework in detail.

What Should You Look for in a Kundali Matching Service in India?

Whether you use OnlineJyotish, AstroSight, AstroSage, or any other platform, evaluate it against these criteria:

Accuracy criteria:

  • Uses Lahiri ayanamsha (sidereal calculation standard)
  • Implements all five Nadi Bhanga cancellation conditions
  • Checks Manglik dosha from Ascendant, Moon, and Venus positions
  • Provides a breakdown of all 8 koota scores, not just the total

Depth criteria:

  • Includes Navamsha (D9) chart compatibility analysis
  • Considers Dasha timing alignment between partners
  • Offers a human astrologer review option

Transparency criteria:

  • Explains the basis for each score in plain language
  • Acknowledges limitations of automated matching
  • Does not claim to predict marriage happiness definitively

A platform that scores well on all three sets of criteria is providing a service closest to what a classical Jyotish expert would offer for the initial screening phase.

Does Online Jyotish Kundali Matching Differ from Offline Consultations?

The calculation is identical—both use the same classical rules. The difference is in the layers of analysis:

An online report runs the Ashtakuta algorithm in seconds and outputs the guna score, basic Manglik status, and sometimes a brief text summary. The depth stops at the Moon nakshatra level.

An offline consultation with a qualified Jyotish expert goes further:

  • Full Lagna (ascendant) chart analysis for both partners
  • Navamsha chart (D9) comparison—marriage-specific divisional chart
  • Dasha period synchronisation—are both partners entering compatible life phases?
  • 7th house analysis in both charts (marriage, partner)
  • Shadbala (6-component planetary strength assessment) for Venus, Jupiter, and the 7th lord
  • Individual dosha assessment beyond Manglik (Kaal Sarp, Sade Sati timing, Guru Chandal)

For important decisions, treat the online report as the first filter and the offline consultation as the final decision-making step. Our guide to choosing a Vedic astrologer in India covers how to evaluate practitioners for this purpose.

What Are Manglik Dosha and Nadi Dosha in Online Matching Reports?

Nadi Dosha — the most critical dosha in kundali matching — occurs when both partners belong to the same Nadi group (Adi, Madhya, or Antya) among the 27 nakshatras. Classical texts associate it with health issues in the marriage, challenges in bearing children, and in severe cases, early widowhood. Five Bhanga conditions cancel Nadi dosha:

1. Both partners share the same nakshatra but have different rashis 2. Both partners share the same rashi but have different nakshatras 3. The nakshatra lords of both partners are the same planet 4. Both nakshatra lords are mutual friends in the planetary friendship table 5. The ruling lord of the matching nakshatra blesses the 7th house of both charts

Manglik Dosha — also called Kuja dosha — occurs when Mars occupies specific houses in the birth chart. A person with Manglik dosha is traditionally matched only with another Manglik partner or one whose chart has a specific planetary cancellation, to prevent the imbalance from creating marital discord.

Many online platforms now clearly flag whether Manglik cancellations apply, which is a significant improvement over older automated systems.

How Do South Indian and North Indian Kundali Matching Systems Differ?

North Indian tradition uses the Ashtakuta (8-koota) system exclusively, with 36 total points and emphasis on Nadi koota.

South Indian tradition—particularly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh—uses Nakshatra Porutham, which evaluates 10 poruthams (compatibility factors):

| Porutham | What It Checks | |----------|---------------| | Dinam | Daily compatibility, longevity | | Ganam | Temperament match | | Rasi | Moon sign compatibility | | Rajju | Marital longevity (most critical in South India) | | Vedha | Obstruction compatibility | | Yoni | Physical/biological harmony | | Rasi-athipathi | Rashi lord friendship | | Vasya | Dominance pattern | | Mahendra | Children, happiness | | Stree-Deergham | Husband's prosperity |

Rajju porutham holds the same critical importance in South India that Nadi koota holds in North India—both assess the most foundational compatibility layer. Many Jyotish platforms now offer both systems, allowing families from different regional traditions to use the appropriate method.

What Questions Should You Ask Before Trusting Any Kundali Matching Result?

Before acting on any online kundali matching report, verify:

1. Which ayanamsha? Lahiri is standard for Indian tradition; Krishnamurti (KP) and Raman differ. A mismatch here changes nakshatra assignments. 2. Does it check all six Manglik houses? The correct set is 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th from Ascendant—not just from Ascendant alone. 3. Are all Nadi Bhanga conditions implemented? Ask the platform directly or cross-check with a manual calculation. 4. Does it include Navamsha analysis? If not, the report is missing the marriage-specific divisional chart that classical Jyotish considers essential. 5. Is there a human review option? For final marriage decisions, human judgment on edge cases, Bhanga conditions, and Dasha timing is irreplaceable.

Is Kundali Matching Alone Sufficient for Marriage Compatibility?

Kundali matching is a well-structured screening tool, not a complete compatibility verdict. Classical texts themselves—including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra—note that the Ashtakuta system was designed to identify stress points, not to guarantee outcomes.

Factors that no kundali matching system measures include: shared values and life goals, communication styles, financial management approaches, family dynamics, and mutual respect. These shape daily married life as much as any planetary configuration.

A complete janam patrika (birth chart) analysis—beyond the Moon-nakshatra Ashtakuta screen—reveals far more about each partner's character, karmic patterns, and life-phase timing. See our detailed guide to janam patrika analysis for a walkthrough of how a full birth chart reading works and what it shows about marriage and long-term wellbeing.

Use online kundali matching as a reliable first filter. Use the full consultation to make the final call.
