Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from October 3 to October 11, 2026 — the major autumn Navratri dedicated to Goddess Durga, culminating with Vijaya Dashami (Dussehra) on October 12. Sharad means autumn — this is the Navratri when the harvest is beginning, the heat has receded, and the Goddess's fierce protective energy (Durga Shakti) is invoked for the year's completion. The Markandeya Purana's Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati — the 700 verses describing Durga's battles with the demons) is the primary scripture of Sharad Navratri. This is the Navratri of Durga Puja in Bengal, of Garba in Gujarat, and of Navadurga worship across India.

In Vedic astrology, Sharad Navratri begins when the Sun enters Libra — its debilitation sign — and the Goddess's power is invoked to counterbalance the Sun's weakness. The Devi Bhagavata Purana explains: when the Sun is debilitated in the enemy's sign, the Goddess's Shakti fills the gap the Sun cannot fill. Sharad Navratri is the most warrior-energy Navratri — it commemorates Durga's battle with Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, and Rama's battle with Ravana. What Is the Maha Ashtami Sandhi Puja?
The Sandhi Puja on Maha Ashtami (October 10, 2026) is the most intensely powerful ritual of the entire Sharad Navratri — it is performed at the exact junction (Sandhi) between the Ashtami and Navami tithis. This transition moment lasts only 24 minutes (12 minutes of Ashtami and 12 minutes of Navami). The Devi Mahatmya identifies this specific moment as when Durga killed both the demons Chanda and Munda — the victory of the Goddess over dual evil forces.
At the Sandhi Puja moment: 108 diyas are lit simultaneously, the Durga Saptashati's 13th Chapter (the Phala Shruti — the benefits of recitation) is recited, and a special Chamunda Puja is performed (since the demon-slaying at Sandhi was done in the Chamunda form). Animal sacrifice (Bali) in traditional Bengal Durga Puja is performed at this moment — though contemporary practice often substitutes with pumpkin or coconut.
The Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya) Recitation Schedule
The Durga Saptashati's 13 chapters are divided across the 9 Navratri days for complete recitation:
| Days | Chapters | Section Name | Content | |------|---------|--------------|---------| | Day 1-3 | Chapters 1 | Prathama Charita | Brahman meets the sages; Madhu-Kaitabha story | | Day 4-6 | Chapters 2-4 | Madhyama Charita | Mahishasura battle | | Day 7-9 | Chapters 5-13 | Uttama Charita | Shumbha-Nishumbha battle; Phala Shruti |
Full recitation: 3-4 hours total across 9 days (30-45 minutes per session). The Navarna Mantra (Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche) is chanted 108 times before each day's recitation.
The Garba Tradition in Sharad Navratri
In Gujarat, Rajasthan, and increasingly across India, Sharad Navratri is celebrated with Garba — the circular dance performed around a lit lamp or Goddess image, 9 nights in a row. The word Garba comes from Garbha (womb) — the circular dance represents the cosmic rotation of the universe around its divine center (the lamp = Goddess). Dandiya Raas (stick dance) is performed on the 9th night. Major Garba venues in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat draw lakhs of participants every Navratri.
Maha Navami: October 11, 2026
Maha Navami is the 9th day — the last full day of Navratri. The Goddess receives the most elaborate Puja of the entire 9 days. Aparajita Puja (worship of the invincible Goddess) is specifically performed on Maha Navami. This is also the day weapon/tool worship (Ayudha Puja or Shastra Puja) is performed in South India — craftsmen and artisans worship their tools, symbolic of the Goddess's energy present in their instruments of work. In Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Ayudha Puja on Navami is a major workplace tradition.
