Chaitra Navratri 2026 runs from March 20 to March 28, 2026 — the spring Navratri beginning on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (the first day of Chaitra month and Hindu New Year) and ending on Ram Navami (March 29, the day Rama was born). This is the Navratri that coincides with the Hindu New Year, the vernal equinox, and the Sun's exaltation in Aries — making it the most energetically charged Navratri for new beginnings, new ventures, and resolutions. The Devi Bhagavata Purana identifies Chaitra Navratri as the Navratri of creation — when the Goddess's creative Shakti is at its annual peak.

In Vedic astrology, Chaitra Navratri begins exactly when the Sun enters Aries — its exaltation sign — at the vernal equinox. This is the Sun at its maximum creative power, and the Goddess worship during this period taps the Solar-Shakti combination that drives all creative endeavor. Chaitra Navratri is therefore specifically recommended for students beginning new courses, entrepreneurs starting ventures, and anyone making major life changes. Why Is Chaitra Navratri Different from Sharada Navratri?
The two major Navratris have distinct energies and theological characters:
Chaitra Navratri (March-April): The Navratri of Brahma — the creator. Occurs at the beginning of the new year. The Devi Bhagavata identifies it as the time the Goddess's energy creates new form. Spring, new growth, new ventures. The Puja emphasis is on Lakshmi and Saraswati forms. Ram Navami (Rama's birth) always concludes Chaitra Navratri — the Devi's creative energy culminates in the birth of Vishnu's ideal avatar.
Sharada Navratri (September-October): The Navratri of Vishnu-Rama — the sustainer. Occurs just before Dussehra, when Rama's battle with Ravana is commemorated. The Markandeya Purana's Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati) is primarily associated with Sharada Navratri. Autumn, harvest, victory.

How to Perform Ghatasthapana on March 20, 2026
Ghatasthapana (the establishment of the sacred vessel) is the most important ritual of Navratri Day 1 — it inaugurates the Goddess's 9-day presence in the home. Method:
1. Timing: At the auspicious Pratipada Muhurat on March 20, 2026 — the first few hours of the morning are most auspicious. Avoid Abhijit Muhurat (certain inauspicious periods) — check 2026 Panchang. 2. Soil and seeds: Fill a clay plate with clean soil from 7 locations. Sow barley (Jau) seeds in the soil. The barley will sprout over 9 days — the growth symbolizes the Goddess's blessing made visible. 3. Kalash: Place a copper or clay Kalash (water vessel) on the soil, filled with water. Add mango leaves at the opening, a coconut on top wrapped with red cloth. 4. Invocation: Invoke all sacred rivers into the Kalash water. Invoke the Goddess: Om Durgaye Namah. I invoke your presence in this Kalash for the 9 days of Chaitra Navratri. 5. Deity image: Place the Goddess (Durga/Shailputri/Navadurga image) near the Kalash. 6. Light lamp — keep the lamp burning for all 9 days. If the lamp goes out, relight it immediately.
Chaitra Navratri Fast Method
Standard Navratri fast: no grains, no pulses, no non-vegetarian food, no onion, no garlic throughout the 9 days. Permitted: fruits, dairy, buckwheat (Kuttu), water chestnut flour (Singhara), sweet potato, sabudana (sago), and sendha namak (rock salt). The strictest practitioners consume only one meal per day after the evening Puja. Many household practitioners observe a grain-free fast on Day 1 and Day 8 (Ashtami) only.
Ram Navami Connection to Chaitra Navratri
Ram Navami falls on the 9th day after Chaitra Navratri begins — Chaitra Shukla Navami. This creates a unique theological structure: the Devi's 9-day creative power culminates in the birth of Rama, Vishnu's avatar who represents the ideal expression of dharma. The sequence is: the Goddess creates the conditions → Rama is born → the world has its ideal protector. Chaitra Navratri devotees who have maintained their 9-day practice receive the full blessing on Ram Navami — the Kanya Puja (worshipping young girls as the Goddess) on Ashtami (March 27) and the Ram Navami Puja on March 29 are the completing acts.
