Pradosh Vrat is observed on the 13th tithi (Trayodashi) of both the waxing and waning lunar fortnights — twice per month, 24 times per year. The Pradosh Kaal (the 1.5-hour window surrounding twilight on Trayodashi evening) is the most potent period for Shiva worship in the entire lunar calendar. The Shiva Purana states that Lord Shiva performs his cosmic dance (Tandava) during Pradosh Kaal and all the gods assemble at Kailash to witness it — making Shiva most accessible to human prayer during this window.

In Vedic astrology, Saturn (Shani) is Shiva's planet in one major interpretation — and Pradosh Vrat is one of the most effective Saturn remedies available. The Shiva Purana explicitly states that Pradosh Vrat removes obstacles created by Saturn and eases the Sade Sati (Saturn's 7.5-year transit over the natal Moon). As of 2026, Saturn transits in Aquarius. Check your Saturn position and current Saturn transit using the free birth chart calculator.
What Is Pradosh Kaal?
Pradosh Kaal is the approximately 90-minute period on Trayodashi (13th tithi) beginning 45 minutes before sunset and ending 45 minutes after sunset. During this window, the sky transitions from day to night — the Sandhya (twilight) state that is considered the most sacred time in the Vedic day. The Shiva Purana identifies this specific transitional window as the time when Shiva is most present in the manifest world and most responsive to human prayer.
The name Pradosh comes from Pra (before) + Dosha (fault/impurity). The Pradosh period is described as the time when sins (Doshas) accumulated during the day are removed by Shiva's grace. Worshipping Shiva during Pradosh Kaal removes both the day's accumulation and deeper karmic debts.
What Are the Different Types of Pradosh Vrat?
Six types of Pradosh Vrat based on the weekday:
Soma Pradosh (Monday): The most beneficial Pradosh — Monday is Shiva's day, making the combination of Shiva's day and Shiva's ideal worship time doubly potent. Soma Pradosh is specifically for fulfillment of all desires.
Bhauma Pradosh (Tuesday): Addresses health issues and healing. Bhauma = Mars-related. Bhauma Pradosh removes health obstacles and physical afflictions.
Saumya Pradosh (Wednesday): For education, Mercury, and creative intelligence. Saumya Pradosh benefits students and professionals requiring mental clarity.
Guru Pradosh (Thursday): For wisdom, Jupiter's blessings, and Guru's grace. Removes obstacles in the path of spiritual progress.
Shukra Pradosh (Friday): For relationships, marriage, and Venus energies. Shukra Pradosh is the most beneficial for relationship and marriage concerns.
Shani Pradosh (Saturday): For Saturn karma removal — the most specifically remedial Pradosh. Shani Pradosh is prescribed specifically for Sade Sati, Shani Dasha, and all Saturn-related delays and obstacles.
Ravi Pradosh (Sunday): For government, authority, and career advancement. Ravi Pradosh benefits those facing career obstacles or government-related matters.
How to Observe Pradosh Vrat: Step-by-Step Method
The complete Pradosh Vrat method from the Shiva Purana:
Pre-dawn: Wake before sunrise, bathe, wear clean white or grey clothing (Shiva's colors).
Daytime: Observe a fast from sunrise. Permitted: water, fruit, dairy. No grains or pulses.
Before Pradosh Kaal (45 minutes before sunset): Bathe again (second ritual bath), wear fresh clothing.
Pradosh Kaal (90 minutes around sunset): 1. Light a ghee lamp before the Shivalinga or Shiva image 2. Apply Vibhuti (sacred ash) to forehead — Shiva's signature offering 3. Offer Bilva leaves (Bel patra) to the Shivalinga — the most sacred Shiva offering; one Bilva leaf offering is equal to 1000 lotus flowers 4. Offer milk, honey, and water for Abhisheka (ceremonial bath of the Shivalinga) 5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times 6. Recite Pradosh Vrat Katha (from the Shiva Purana) 7. Recite Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 11 times 8. Evening Shiva Aarti
After Pradosh Kaal: Break the fast with simple food — fruit first, then a light vegetarian meal.
What Are the Benefits of Pradosh Vrat?
The Shiva Purana lists specific benefits for each type of Pradosh. General benefits of all Pradosh Vrats: removal of sins and obstacles, fulfillment of specific desires stated in the Sankalp, protection from accidents, reduction of Saturn's malefic effects, improvement in overall life quality and health. The Linga Purana adds: "One who observes 26 consecutive Pradosh Vrats without breaking them receives the boon of whatever they most desire."
The astrological precision: Pradosh Vrat is most effective when a current Saturn transit or Dasha is creating life obstacles. The Shiva Purana identifies Saturn as Shiva's devotee — and Shiva, being Saturn's deity, can override Saturn's karmic lessons when the practitioner's devotion is sufficient.
What Is the Pradosh Vrat Mantra?
The primary Pradosh Vrat mantra is Om Namah Shivaya — 108 times during the Pradosh Kaal window. Additional mantras: Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (Om Tryambakam Yajamahe...) — 11 or 108 times for healing and obstacle removal. The Shiva Panchakshara (Namah Shivaya — the 5-syllable core) repeated continuously in the mind throughout the day.
