The Ekadashi Vrat Katha originates in the Padma Purana, where the sage Jaimini asks Vyasa why Ekadashi (the 11th lunar day) is considered the most sacred of all fasting days. Vyasa narrates the story of how Ekadashi herself — the personified 11th tithi — emerged from Vishnu's body to slay the demon Mura when all other weapons had failed. Vishnu, pleased by her valor, granted her the boon that anyone who observes the Ekadashi fast would attain liberation (Moksha). This is the foundational Ekadashi Vrat Katha that underlies all 24 individual Ekadashi observances across the Hindu lunar year.

In Vedic astrology, Ekadashi falls on the 11th tithi of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) lunar fortnights — 24 Ekadashis per year plus occasional Adhika (extra) Ekadashis in leap lunar months. The 11th house in the birth chart governs gains and fulfillment of desires — and Ekadashi fasting is the most direct available method of activating the 11th house's positive potential. What Is the Origin Story of Ekadashi?

The Ekadashi origin story from the Padma Purana (Uttara Khanda): In the Satya Yuga, a powerful demon named Mura performed severe austerities and obtained a boon making him invincible to all weapons. Mura defeated the gods and occupied the heavens. The gods approached Vishnu for help. Vishnu entered into battle with Mura but after a long fight became fatigued. He retreated to a cave in the Himalayas to rest. While Vishnu slept, Mura approached to kill him. At that moment, a divine female form emerged from Vishnu's body — the personification of the 11th tithi, Ekadashi. She fought Mura with a brilliant weapon and killed him instantly. Vishnu, awakening and seeing the defeated Mura, asked who had done this deed. Ekadashi revealed herself as a power born from his own divine body. Vishnu granted her the supreme boon: "Whoever observes a fast on your day — even a partial fast, even with difficulty — will attain liberation. All their sins will be destroyed. I will protect them in this life and grant Moksha at the end."

What Are the 24 Ekadashis and Their Names?

The 24 Ekadashis each have a specific name and associated Vrat Katha. The names and their lunar positions as of 2026:

Shukla Paksha Ekadashis (waxing moon): 1. Utpatti Ekadashi (Margashirsha) — the Ekadashi birth story itself 2. Mokshada Ekadashi (Margashirsha) — grants liberation; Bhagavad Gita was spoken on this day 3. Pausha Putrada Ekadashi (Pausha) — grants sons and progeny 4. Shattila Ekadashi (Magha) — involves sesame seed offerings 5. Jaya Ekadashi (Magha) — frees from ghost-existence 6. Amalaki Ekadashi (Phalguna) — associated with the Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) tree sacred to Vishnu 7. Kamada Ekadashi (Chaitra) — fulfills desires 8. Mohini Ekadashi (Vaishakha) — removes attachment, grants discrimination 9. Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha) — the strictest fast (no water), equivalent to all 24 Ekadashis combined 10. Deva Shayani Ekadashi (Ashadha) — Vishnu begins Yoga Nidra (cosmic sleep) for 4 months 11. Putrada Ekadashi (Shravana) — grants sons 12. Parsva Ekadashi (Bhadrapada) — Vishnu turns over in his sleep 13. Rama Ekadashi (Kartik) — connects to Rama's battle preparation 14. Devuthani Ekadashi (Kartik) — Vishnu awakens; marriage season begins 15. Vaikuntha Ekadashi (Margashirsha) — the gates of Vaikuntha (Vishnu's abode) open

Krishna Paksha Ekadashis (waning moon): 16-24: Saphala, Vijaya, Papamochani, Varuthini, Apara, Yogini, Kamika, Aja, Indira Ekadashis — each with its specific Katha related to Vishnu's divine interventions in the lives of devotees who observed these fasts.

What Are the Rules of Ekadashi Vrat?

The Ekadashi Vrat rules from the Padma Purana and Skanda Purana. The fast begins on Dashami (10th tithi) evening — no eating after sunset the night before Ekadashi. On Ekadashi: complete fast (best) or partial fast with fruits, milk, and permitted foods. No grains, pulses, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or onions. No sleeping during daytime. Night vigil (Jagaran) — staying awake through Ekadashi night with prayer and Vishnu names. Breaking the fast (Parana) on Dwadashi (12th tithi) morning — not before specific auspicious times listed in the Panchang. Parana must happen within a specific window — breaking the fast too early or too late reduces the merit.

What Can You Eat on Ekadashi?

The Ekadashi permitted foods are: fruits of all kinds, dairy products (milk, yogurt, ghee, paneer), root vegetables not classified as grains (sweet potato, potato, yam, colocasia), nuts and dried fruits, rock salt (Sendha Namak only — not regular salt), and water (except for Nirjala Ekadashi). Forbidden foods: rice, wheat, barley, all pulses and legumes, corn, regular table salt, eggplant (traditionally prohibited on sacred days), and anything prepared in oil other than ghee.

The specific spiritual reason from the Padma Purana: on Ekadashi, sin-accumulating energy (Papa) resides in grains. Eating grains on Ekadashi means consuming this energy. This is why even people who cannot fully fast are advised to at minimum avoid all grains.

What Are the Benefits of Ekadashi Vrat?

The Padma Purana states that one Ekadashi fast destroys the sins accumulated over 10 million births. This is the most extravagant merit claim in Vedic devotional literature. The practical benefits documented in the tradition: physiological — the bi-monthly 24-hour grain fast constitutes a form of intermittent fasting that Ayurveda identifies as beneficial for digestive health and the lymphatic system (Kapha reduction). Devotional — the Ekadashi night vigil with Vishnu names creates a concentrated period of devotional focus that accelerates the meditation practice. Astrological — Ekadashi falls on the 11th tithi, which in the lunar calendar governs income and desires; regular Ekadashi fasting is prescribed for Rahu afflictions (Rahu creates insatiable desire) as a method of disciplining the desire-energy.

What Is the Ekadashi Parana (Breaking the Fast)?

The Ekadashi Parana — the time and method of breaking the fast — is considered as important as the fast itself. Breaking the fast at the wrong time negates the merit. The Dwadashi (12th tithi) has a specific Parana window listed in each day's Panchang. The fast is broken by drinking water first, followed by Tulsi leaves soaked in water, followed by Dwadashi-compliant food. If Dwadashi ends before sunrise, Parana must happen after sunrise but before the Dwadashi tithi closes — this creates the "Viddha Ekadashi" timing complexity that different regional traditions resolve differently.

What Is the Significance of Reading Ekadashi Katha?

Reading the Ekadashi Vrat Katha on Ekadashi day is considered equal in merit to the fast itself. The Padma Purana states: "One who hears the Ekadashi Katha attains the same merit as one who fasts." This provision exists for people who cannot fast due to illness, pregnancy, or other constraints. The Katha for each of the 24 Ekadashis is specific — reading the wrong Katha (a random Ekadashi story on a day with a specific tithi name) reduces the merit. Mobile apps and printed Panchang books include the specific Katha for each Ekadashi.
