Diwali 2026 falls on October 20, 2026 (Tuesday) — the main Lakshmi Puja night of Diwali on Kartik Amavasya (the new moon of Kartik month). The complete 5-day Diwali festival of 2026 runs from October 18 (Dhanteras) through October 22 (Bhai Dooj). Diwali is the festival of lights, celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his defeat of Ravana — and simultaneously the night when Goddess Lakshmi visits homes to bestow prosperity on those who have cleaned and lit their homes to welcome her.

In Vedic astrology, Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya — the new moon of the month most sacred to Vishnu. The new moon of Kartik is when the Moon is weakest (new moon = no moonlight) and Lakshmi's arrival with light is the cosmic response to the darkness. Day 1 — Dhanteras (October 18, 2026)

Dhanvantari Jayanti: Dhanteras is Dhanvantari Jayanti — the day the divine physician emerged from the Samudra Manthan. The Dhanvantari Mantra (Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Dhanvantaraye...) is chanted 108 times in the evening. Offer neem leaves and tulsi to the Dhanvantari image.

Metal purchase: The tradition of buying new metal objects (utensils, jewelry, coins) on Dhanteras dates to the Skanda Purana's teaching that metal represents healing instruments — buying metal on Dhanvantari Jayanti invites health and prosperity for the year.

Lakshmi footsteps: In the evening, small clay footsteps are drawn from the main door toward the Puja room — symbolically guiding Lakshmi into the home. Rangoli patterns are drawn around the footsteps.

Yama Dipa: A single oil lamp is lit facing south (Yama's direction) on Dhanteras evening — a specific lamp to honor Yama (death's guardian) and pray for protection from untimely death in the family.

Day 2 — Chhoti Diwali / Narak Chaturdashi (October 19, 2026)

Narak Chaturdashi celebrates Krishna's defeat of the demon Narakasura — who had imprisoned 16,000 women in his palace. Krishna killed Narakasura on this day and freed them. The celebration: an oil bath before sunrise (the specific auspicious time is before sunrise on Chaturdashi), cleaning the house, and lighting lamps.

The oil bath requirement: An oil bath (Abhyanga Snan) before sunrise on Narak Chaturdashi is the specific Chhoti Diwali practice that prevents the fate of Naraka (hell). The Skanda Purana states: one who does not take this oil bath goes to Naraka in the afterlife.

Day 3 — Diwali Main Night (October 20, 2026)

Lakshmi Puja Muhurat: The primary Lakshmi Puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal — approximately 45 minutes after sunset on the Amavasya evening. The Muhurat for Lakshmi Puja on October 20, 2026 falls in the Pradosh window (verify exact timing with your city's Panchang).

The Complete Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja: 1. Clean the house thoroughly before sunset — Lakshmi does not enter dirty homes 2. Draw Rangoli at the entrance 3. Light earthen diyas (oil lamps) throughout the home — minimum 5 diyas, ideally 108 in a complete practice 4. Arrange Lakshmi image, Ganesha image, and a pot of water with mango leaves and coconut (Kalash) 5. Offer Lotus flowers (or any white/red flowers), sweets, gold/silver coins 6. Chant Om Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namah 108 times 7. Recite Sri Sukta (the Rig Vedic hymn to Lakshmi) 8. Perform Aarti with the Lakshmi Aarti (Om Jai Lakshmi Mata...) 9. Distribution of sweets and Prasad

Kuber Puja: On Diwali night, Kuber (the god of wealth) is also worshipped alongside Lakshmi — he governs the storage and accumulation of wealth. A small Kuber Yantra or image is placed to the right of Lakshmi.

Night lamps: Keep lamps burning throughout the night of Diwali — Lakshmi's visit happens at midnight according to tradition. Lamps going out before morning indicates Lakshmi has left.

Day 4 — Govardhan Puja / Annakut (October 21, 2026)

Govardhan Puja commemorates Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill (Girdhara) on his little finger for 7 days to shelter the people of Mathura from Indra's devastating rain. A model of the Govardhan hill is made from cow dung and decorated with flowers. An Annakut (mountain of food) — dozens of cooked dishes arranged in a mound — is offered to Krishna. This is the day when new business ledgers (bahi khatas) are inaugurated in Gujarat and Rajasthan (the accounting new year in these states begins on this day).

Day 5 — Bhai Dooj / Yama Dwitiya (October 22, 2026)

Bhai Dooj is the final day of Diwali — the day when Yama (god of death) visited his sister Yamuna at her home. Yamuna performed the Tika ceremony (applying a protective mark on the forehead) on her brother Yama and prayed for his longevity. Yama granted the boon: any brother who receives Tika from his sister on this day will be protected from untimely death. Sisters apply tika and feed their brothers; brothers give gifts in return.

What Are the Most Important Astrological Times for Diwali Puja 2026?

For Diwali Puja 2026, the critical timing is the Pradosh Kaal on October 20 — approximately 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM (varies by city). Lakshmi Puja performed during the Pradosh window, while the Amavasya tithi is active, is the most potent possible Lakshmi worship of the year. Puja performed after this window (8 PM or later) is still meritorious but outside the peak period. Verify exact Pradosh Muhurat for your city using a 2026 Panchang.
