A Prashna chart — also called a horary chart — is cast for the exact moment a question is asked, not for the questioner's birth time. The premise of Prashna is that the moment of sincere question-asking encodes the answer in the planetary positions of that moment, regardless of what natal chart the questioner brings. For practitioners, this makes Prashna an exceptionally practical tool: even when a birth time is unknown or unreliable, a clear question with a recorded asking moment is enough to produce a meaningful reading.

This guide walks through the complete process of creating a Prashna chart correctly: capturing the question moment, casting the lagna and houses, applying the classical analysis sequence, and avoiding the common mistakes that distort horary predictions.

What Is a Prashna Chart in Vedic Astrology?

A Prashna chart is a Vedic horoscope cast for the moment a question is sincerely asked, with the planets and houses interpreted as a direct response to the question. The system has its own classical literature — the Prashna Marga, Shatpanchasika, and Krishneeyam being the most authoritative sources — and is treated by serious jyotishis as a parallel discipline alongside natal astrology.

The Prashna methodology operates on three core assumptions:

The moment of question is karmically significant. The instant a sincere question crystallizes carries the energetic signature of the answer.

The chart speaks to the question, not the person. The same questioner asking the same question at two different times can receive two different chart readings — both valid for their respective moments.

The questioner's intention shapes the chart's relevance. A casual or insincere question produces a casual or unreliable chart. Sincerity is the prerequisite.

This means Prashna is best suited to specific, time-bound questions ("Will my son's surgery succeed tomorrow?", "Will the property deal close this month?") rather than open-ended speculation ("What is my life purpose?").

What Information Do You Need to Cast a Prashna Chart?

Five pieces of information must be recorded at the moment of question:

1. Exact time of question. Hour, minute, and ideally second of when the question was clearly formed in the questioner's mind. If the question was written or asked aloud, use that precise moment.

2. Geographic location of the questioner. Latitude and longitude of where the questioner is when the question is asked. Not the location of the event being asked about — the location of the asking.

3. The exact question wording. Write down the question verbatim. Different phrasings can produce different chart-relevant houses.

4. The questioner's mental state. Note whether the questioner was calm, anxious, urgent, casual. This contextualizes later interpretation.

5. Any visible omens. Birds calling, sudden weather changes, lights flickering, animals crossing — classical Prashna texts give these significant interpretive weight.

A Vedic chart calculation tool can compute the prashna lagna once you input the asking time and location. The same software used for natal charts works for prashna charts — just substitute the asking moment for the birth moment.

How Do You Cast the Prashna Chart Step by Step?

Step 1 — Record the moment. Note time, location, and question wording the moment the question crystallizes. Do not delay; even 5-10 minute delays can shift the lagna across rashi boundaries.

Step 2 — Compute the prashna lagna. Using the asking time and location, calculate the rising sign (ascendant) at that moment. Use sidereal (Vedic) calculation, not tropical.

Step 3 — Place all nine planets in the chart. Position Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu in their houses based on the moment's planetary positions.

Step 4 — Identify question-relevant houses. Determine which houses correspond to the question being asked: 5th for children, 7th for marriage and partnerships, 10th for career, 4th for property, 6th for litigation and competition, 8th for inheritance and longevity, etc.

Step 5 — Identify the significator planets. For each question-house, identify the lord of that house and any planets occupying it. These are the primary signifiers.

Step 6 — Calculate the Arudha Lagna. Using the standard Arudha calculation (lagna lord's distance from lagna projected forward), find the AL of the prashna chart. This shows how the situation is publicly perceived.

Step 7 — Note Moon's position. The Moon in Prashna is the cosignifier of the questioner's mind — its sign, house, and aspectual relationships are critical for understanding the questioner's actual readiness.

Step 8 — Apply analysis frameworks. Use the classical analytical frameworks (covered below) to draw conclusions specific to the question type.

What Are the Classical Analytical Frameworks for Prashna?

Lagna and Lagna Lord Analysis. The strength, placement, and afflictions of the prashna lagna and its lord describe the overall context of the question — favorable, mixed, or unfavorable underlying conditions.

Moon Analysis. The Moon's sign, nakshatra, house, and waxing/waning state describes the questioner's mental clarity, emotional readiness, and the timing-window within which action should be taken.

Question-House and Lord Analysis. For each question type, the relevant house and its lord must be assessed. Strong, well-placed lord = favorable outcome. Afflicted, weak lord = unfavorable or delayed outcome.

Arudha Analysis. The Arudha Lagna shows public perception. For questions involving third-party decisions (will the loan be approved? will the proposal be accepted?), AL is often more important than the natal lagna.

Trikona-from-Question-House Analysis. Project the trikonas (5th and 9th) from the question-house. These show the supporting and concluding factors for the question.

Aspect Analysis. Identify which planets aspect the question-house and its lord. Benefic aspects support favorable outcomes; malefic aspects indicate obstruction.

Yogini Dasha or Other Time-Based System. For specific timing within the question's outcome window, use Yogini dasha (a Prashna-specific time system) or vimshottari sub-period analysis.

A marriage compatibility check can complement Prashna analysis when partnership-related questions involve cross-chart factors.

How Do You Avoid Common Prashna Casting Mistakes?

Mistake 1 — Using approximate time. Even 10 minutes of error can shift the lagna across signs and significantly change interpretation. Use exact time in 24-hour format with seconds when available.

Mistake 2 — Casting the chart for when you decide to consult, not when the question first arose. The original moment of question is the correct anchor — not a later moment of reflection.

Mistake 3 — Treating Prashna as natal-style analysis. Prashna has its own techniques and conventions; applying natal interpretation directly leads to errors. Specifically, the Prashna lagna does not represent the questioner's body or personality — it represents the question's context.

Mistake 4 — Reading multiple unrelated questions from one chart. Each question deserves its own chart. Asking three questions in one moment and reading all three from the same chart produces unreliable answers for some.

Mistake 5 — Ignoring Moon's role. The Moon in Prashna is the universal cosignifier. Even excellent question-house analysis can be invalidated by an afflicted Moon — read Moon condition first as a "go/no-go" gate.

Mistake 6 — Forcing a yes/no when the chart is genuinely ambiguous. Some Prashna charts are clearly favorable, some clearly unfavorable, and some genuinely undetermined (mixed signals from multiple frameworks). Honest interpretation includes acknowledging the latter.

What Are the Most Common Prashna Question Types?

Will / when / how questions: Yes/no, timing, and process-method questions. Most Prashna charts handle these well.

Lost object questions: Where is the missing item? What is its current condition? Will it be recovered? — A specialized branch of Prashna with its own classical literature.

Health and recovery questions: Will surgery succeed? Will the illness resolve? What is the condition's underlying cause? — Requires combined analysis with the questioner's natal chart when available.

Travel and journey questions: Will the journey complete safely? Should I depart on the proposed date? — Often used by traditional travelers before long pilgrimages or business journeys.

Marriage and proposal questions: Will this proposal be accepted? Is this the right partner? — Often combined with cross-chart compatibility analysis when both partner birth charts are available.

Litigation and dispute questions: Will I win the case? Will the negotiation succeed? — Particularly answered through 6th house analysis combined with AL.

Career and business questions: Will I get this job? Will this business succeed? — Combined 10th house and AL analysis.

A numerology overlay on the question date often corroborates or refines Prashna interpretation, particularly for timing-sensitive questions.
