Karat Sada Shatrun Chhayakari. | Parvati, the beloved daughter of Mother Maina, adorns his left side with extraordinary beauty. The trident in his hand shines gloriously; he always brings ruin to enemies. |

History and Origin of Shiv Chalisa
Shiv Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional prayer to Lord Shiva following the classical chalisa format established by Tulsidas. It covers Shiva's essential attributes: his third eye, the crescent moon and Ganga River in his hair, his serpent ornaments, the Trishul (trident), and his role as the destroyer of evil. The Chalisa references key episodes from Shiva Purana including Shiva's marriage to Parvati, his destruction of Tripura (the three demon cities), and his role as the guru of all gods.
Lord Shiva is addressed by 108 names in the Shiva Sahasranamam. The Shiv Chalisa distills the most important of these into 40 devotional verses accessible to ordinary practitioners without formal Sanskrit education.
How to Recite Shiv Chalisa — Correct Practice
Shiv Chalisa recitation peaks during Sawan (Shravan) month — the rainy season dedicated to Shiva — when millions of Shiva devotees (Shiv Bhakts) recite it daily, often while walking barefoot to Shiva temples carrying Ganga water (Kanwar Yatra). Mahashivaratri (the great night of Shiva in February or March) is the single most powerful day for Shiv Chalisa recitation, with many devotees maintaining an all-night vigil.
The standard Monday practice is: wake before sunrise, take a bath, offer water (Abhishek) on the Shiva Lingam with milk, water, or Ganga water, recite the Shiv Chalisa, and offer Bilva (Bel) leaves. Bilva leaves are uniquely sacred to Shiva — the Shiva Purana states one Bilva leaf equals 1,000 lotus flowers in Shiva's worship.

Shiv Chalisa as a Vedic Astrology Remedy
In Vedic astrology, Shiva governs Saturn (Shani is considered Shiva's devotee and son in some Puranic accounts). The Shiv Chalisa is prescribed for all Saturn-related afflictions, Kaal Sarp Dosha, and Vish Yoga (a difficult combination involving Saturn and Moon). For those with Kaal Sarp Dosha, reciting the Shiv Chalisa on Mondays and during the Nag Panchami festival is the standard remedy from the Parasara Smriti.
Shiv Chalisa is also prescribed for those with Saturn in the 7th house (delays or difficulties in marriage) or Saturn aspecting Venus (relationship coldness). For these placements, Monday recitation combined with offering white flowers and milk to Shiva is the classical combination.
