The Mahamrityunjay Mantra appears in the Rigveda (Mandala 7, Hymn 59, verse 12) composed by Rishi Vasishtha. It also appears in the Yajurveda (3.60) and the Atharva Veda. The Shiva Purana narrates that Rishi Markandeya, destined to die at age 16, recited this mantra with such devotion that Shiva himself appeared and defeated Yama (the god of death), granting Markandeya immortality. This story is the scriptural basis for the mantra's power over death and illness.

The mantra addresses Shiva as Tryambaka — the three-eyed god. The three eyes represent the Sun (right eye), the Moon (left eye), and fire (the third eye on the forehead). Together they represent the three time periods (past, present, future), the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, deep sleep), and the three qualities (Tamas, Rajas, Sattva). Shiva's three eyes see beyond the limitations of ordinary perception — including the limitation of death.

The cucumber metaphor in the second line is one of the most precise images in Vedic literature. A ripe cucumber separates from its vine cleanly, without pain or damage — this is how the mantra asks for liberation from death. In temples and Vedic rituals, the mantra is incorporated into Rudrabhishek — the ritual bathing of the Shiva Lingam with water, milk, honey, and sacred substances. Each pour is accompanied by one repetition, with 108 repetitions forming a complete Abhishek.
