History and Origin of Shiv Aarti
Shiv Aarti (Om Jai Shiv Omkara) follows the same structural template as the Vishnu Aarti (Om Jai Jagdish Hare) and was composed in the medieval North Indian Shaiva devotional tradition. The text is attributed to Shivananda Swami (who signs the final verse). It is performed in virtually every Shiva temple in India as the evening Puja closure and is one of the most widely sung temple Aartis in the country.
The central philosophical point of the Aarti — that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are one (verse 4) — reflects the Advaita Vedanta synthesis that became dominant in North Indian temple practice from the medieval period onward. This syncretism explains why the Shiv Aarti is often performed at Vishnu temples and vice versa.
How to Recite Shiv Aarti — Correct Practice
Shiv Aarti is performed at Shiva temples every evening as the formal closure of the day's worship. In home practice, it follows the Shiv Chalisa in the standard Monday Shiva Puja sequence: wake before sunrise → bath → Abhishek (milk/water offering on Shiva Lingam) → Bilva leaf offering → Shiv Chalisa → Shiv Aarti → prasad.
During Sawan month, millions perform this complete sequence every Monday. On Mahashivaratri, the Aarti is repeated throughout the all-night vigil at the four Puja times (midnight, dawn, midday, sunset).

Shiv Aarti as a Vedic Astrology Remedy
The Shiv Aarti provides the same Saturn-remedy benefits as the Shiv Chalisa when performed together as a complete Puja. The Aarti specifically amplifies the Chalisa's energy by sealing the formal worship session with the flame offering — the Agni (fire) element of the Aarti is considered a direct offering to Shiva, who is associated with fire in his Agni-Shiva aspect.
For Sade Sati practice: perform the complete Monday Shiva Puja (Chalisa + Aarti) every Monday through the full 7.5-year transit. The cumulative protective effect builds progressively — most practitioners report tangible relief from Saturn's contracting energy within the first 40 Monday sessions.
