History and Origin of Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa was composed by Goswami Tulsidas, the Vaishnava poet-saint born in 1532 CE in Rajapur, Uttar Pradesh. Tulsidas composed it while reportedly imprisoned in Fatehpur Sikri by Emperor Akbar, and legend records that he recited it continuously until Hanuman himself appeared and secured his release. The composition is in Awadhi, a dialect of Hindi, and follows the chaupai metre — four lines of 16 matras (metrical beats) each.
The Chalisa is part of the Hanuman Chalisa section within the Vinay Patrika, one of Tulsidas's major works. The name Chalisa derives from the Sanskrit chaalis (forty), referring to the 40 verses. Tulsidas drew his source material from the Valmiki Ramayana, the Adhyatma Ramayana, and the Ananda Ramayana — all of which contain detailed accounts of Hanuman's deeds.
Verse 18 contains a remarkable astronomical reference: Yug Sahastra Yojan Par Bhanu — "the sun is a thousand yugas and yojanas distant." A yojan in the Arthashastra period was approximately 8 miles. Using the conversion (1,000 × 12,000 × 8 miles), the result is approximately 96 million miles — the actual mean Earth-Sun distance is 93 million miles. Tulsidas embedded this figure in a devotional verse without telescopes or modern instruments, a detail Vedic scholars cite as evidence of the astronomical knowledge preserved in Sanskrit tradition.
How to Recite Hanuman Chalisa — Correct Practice
In 2026, the Hanuman Chalisa is recited by an estimated 300 million people daily — more than any other Hindu prayer after the Gayatri Mantra. A single complete recitation takes 8–10 minutes at a devotional pace.
The classical prescriptions for recitation frequency are: one recitation for general daily practice, three times for general protection, seven times for wish fulfillment (manokamna siddhi, as described in Tulsidas's Vinay Patrika), eleven times for resolving specific obstacles, and 108 times as the maximum intensive practice performed under a qualified guru's guidance.
For specific purposes: Sade Sati relief requires seven recitations every Saturday and Tuesday sustained for the full Saturn period; Mangal Dosha remedy requires eleven recitations on Tuesdays for 21 consecutive Tuesdays; Rahu Mahadasha requires three recitations daily at dawn.
Correct preparation includes sitting on an asana (mat), facing east or north, lighting a ghee or sesame oil lamp before Hanuman's image, and offering sindoor (vermilion) and jasmine flowers. Take a Sankalp — a stated intention — before beginning. Do not stop mid-recitation; if interrupted, restart from verse 1.

Hanuman Chalisa as a Vedic Astrology Remedy
In Vedic astrology, Hanuman governs three planets directly: Saturn (Shani), Mars (Mangal), and Rahu. This three-planet coverage makes the Hanuman Chalisa the single most versatile planetary remedy in the classical tradition.
For Sade Sati (Saturn's 7.5-year transit over the natal Moon), the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 22) lists devotion to Lord Vishnu's devotees — which includes Hanuman — as a primary Saturn remedy. Reciting the Chalisa on Saturdays builds a cumulative protective relationship with Saturn's energy.
For Mangal Dosha (Mars placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house), the Phaladeepika (Chapter 19) recommends Hanuman worship on Tuesdays — Mars's day — as a softening measure. The Chalisa's verse 3 (Mahavir Bikram Bajrangi) specifically addresses Mars's qualities of courage and strength.
For Rahu periods (Rahu Mahadasha or Antardasha), verse 24 (Bhoot Pisach Nikat Nahin Avai) is the key verse — it promises protection from Rahu's domain of confusion, fear, and unseen forces. Classical astrologers prescribe three daily recitations at dawn during Rahu periods.
