Vat Savitri Vrat
Vat Savitri Vrat is observed by married women on Jyeshtha Amavasya (North India) or Jyeshtha Purnima (Maharashtra/Gujarat). Women tie threads around a Banyan tree (Vat = Banyan) and pray for their husband's long life, invoking Savitri — the woman who argued with Yama (the god of death) and brought her husband back to life.
Significance of Vat Savitri Vrat
Savitri was a princess who fell in love with Satyavan — a prince who was destined to die within a year. Knowing this, she still married him. On the day the sage Narada had prophesied (Jyeshtha Amavasya), Satyavan collapsed in the forest and Yama (the god of death) came for him. Savitri followed Yama, refusing to leave. Through her steadfast arguments and wisdom, she obtained boons from Yama — ultimately tricking him into granting Satyavan his life back. Savitri is the archetype of wifely devotion and wisdom defeating fate itself.
Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
Savitri asked Yama for four boons, each carefully worded to ultimately force his hand. First boon: restoration of her father-in-law's eyesight. Second: restoration of his kingdom. Third: 100 children for her parents-in-law. Fourth: 100 children for herself. Yama granted the third — "100 sons for you." Savitri pointed out that for 100 sons to be born to her, her husband Satyavan would need to be alive. Yama, bound by his word, returned Satyavan to life. The Banyan tree (under which Satyavan died) is worshipped to commemorate this event — it is the tree of longevity, with its aerial roots descending to the earth like new life.

Vedic Astrology & Vat Savitri Vrat
Jyeshtha Amavasya — the new moon of Jyeshtha month — is when the Sun is at the cusp of Taurus-Gemini transition. Amavasya is the day of the ancestors and Yama. Performing a vrat on this day to seek protection from Yama for the husband directly addresses death-related fear at its astrologically most active time.
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Vat Savitri Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
