Mangalvar Vrat
Mangalvar (Tuesday) Vrat is observed in honor of Lord Hanuman and the planet Mars (Mangal). It is the primary remedy for Mangal Dosha and Mars-related difficulties. Devotees wear red, offer red flowers and sindoor to Hanuman, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa. The fast is broken after the evening puja.
Significance of Mangalvar Vrat
Tuesday is Mars's day (Mangal = Mars). Lord Hanuman is the deity associated with Mars — both are red, both represent courage, strength, and protection. Hanuman is Chiranjeevi (immortal) and is believed to be actively present on earth. His Tuesday worship attracts the largest congregations at Hanuman temples. For those with Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction in the horoscope), consistent Tuesday Vrat is the primary prescribed remedy. The Shani-Hanuman connection (Hanuman freed Saturn from Ravana's prison) also makes Tuesday Vrat useful for Saturn difficulties.
Mangalvar Vrat Katha
Once a devotee was deeply troubled by enemies and bad luck. He began observing Tuesday Vrat sincerely — offering sindoor and sesame oil to Hanuman each week. Over time, his obstacles dissolved, his enemies became neutral, and his fortune changed. Hanuman's protection comes to those who call on him sincerely — the Ramayana records that Hanuman told Rama: "Anyone who worships me will be under my protection." The Tuesday Vrat is the simplest invocation of this protection.
How to Observe Mangalvar Vrat
- 1Wake early, bathe, and wear red or orange clothing
- 2Visit a Hanuman temple; offer red flowers (champa, hibiscus), red sindoor mixed with mustard oil, and betel leaves
- 3Recite the Hanuman Chalisa at least 3 times — 11 or 108 times for more serious situations
- 4Recite the Bajrang Baan and Sundar Kanda if time permits
- 5Fast through the day — eat only one meal after sunset, or take only fruit and milk
- 6Light a sesame oil (til ka tel) lamp before Hanuman
Udyapan — How to Conclude the Vrat
No formal Udyapan — Tuesday Vrat is an ongoing weekly observance. For those who vowed Tuesday Vrat as a remedy for Mangal Dosha, completing 11 consecutive Tuesdays is considered a full cycle; after the 11th, perform a special abhishek of Hanuman.

Vedic Astrology & Mangalvar Vrat
Mars (Mangala) rules Aries and Scorpio and governs courage, property, siblings, and the blood. A weak or afflicted Mars causes accidents, conflicts, and delays in marriage (Mangal Dosha). Tuesday fasting with Hanuman puja strengthens Mars through its divine regent — Hanuman, who embodies Mars's best qualities (protection, strength, service).
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Mangalvar Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
