Brihaspativar Vrat
Brihaspativar (Thursday) Vrat is observed in honor of Lord Vishnu and Jupiter (Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods). Devotees wear yellow, eat yellow food, offer yellow flowers to Vishnu or Banana trees, and observe a partial fast. It is the primary remedy for a weak Jupiter in the horoscope.
Significance of Brihaspativar Vrat
Thursday is Jupiter's day (Brihaspati = Jupiter, teacher of gods). Lord Vishnu — whose grace flows through Jupiter — is the primary deity. The Banana tree (Kela) is considered Jupiter's plant and is worshipped on Thursday. This vrat is especially recommended for: those with weak or debilitated Jupiter, women seeking a good husband (Jupiter governs the husband in a woman's chart), and anyone seeking career growth, higher education, or children. The Katha associated with Thursday Vrat involves a king who ignored Jupiter's worship and lost everything — regaining it only when a faithful woman's Thursday devotion intervened.
Brihaspativar Vrat Katha
A king was very wealthy but had a proud wife who refused to honor her servants or give charity on Thursdays. A wandering sadhu (holy man) came to their door on a Thursday seeking alms — the queen refused him. The sadhu, who was Jupiter in disguise, cursed the kingdom. The king became a pauper. A loyal washerwoman (dhobin) who had always observed Thursday Vrat was guided to help the queen observe the vrat properly. When the queen completed the vrat with sincere faith, Jupiter relented and the kingdom was restored. The story underscores that Thursday Vrat should be observed with generosity (dan) — not just personal fasting.

Vedic Astrology & Brihaspativar Vrat
Jupiter (Brihaspati) rules Sagittarius and Pisces, governs wisdom, children, teachers, and expansion. Thursday fasting with banana tree worship and yellow food is the classic Jupiter-strengthening ritual. For women, Jupiter governs the husband (darakaraka in some systems); for men, it governs children and prosperity.
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Brihaspativar Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
