Solah Somvar Vrat
Solah Somvar Vrat is a vow of 16 consecutive Monday fasts in honor of Lord Shiva. It is primarily observed by unmarried women seeking a good husband and married women seeking marital harmony. After 16 Mondays, an Udyapan (completion ceremony) is performed to formally conclude the vrat.
Significance of Solah Somvar Vrat
The number 16 (Solah) is significant — it equals the 16 lunar kalas (phases) of the complete Moon cycle. Shiva, wearing the Moon, is invoked in all 16 phases of his devotion. The vrat is described in the Shiva Purana as the most effective remedy for marriage delays and relationship difficulties. The Skanda Purana records Parvati telling a queen about the power of this vrat — a woman who observed 16 Mondays received her desired husband and prosperous family.
Solah Somvar Vrat Katha
A wise king's daughter was beautiful but had a malefic Saturn-Moon combination in her chart that would delay marriage. A sage told her to observe Solah Somvar Vrat. She did — fasting each Monday, offering bael leaves and milk to Shiva. After 16 Mondays, during the Udyapan feast, a prince arrived at the ceremony, fell in love with her, and married her. The story emphasizes that Shiva's grace — invoked through the Moon's 16-phase cycle — resolves the Saturn-Moon obstruction that causes marriage delays.
How to Observe Solah Somvar Vrat
- 1Begin the vow on any auspicious Monday (Shravan Somvar is ideal)
- 2Each Monday: fast through the day, breaking only with milk or fruit
- 3Offer bael leaves, milk, and white flowers to Shiva; recite Om Namah Shivaya 108 times
- 4Read the Somvar Vrat Katha each week
- 5Do not miss a single Monday — if illness prevents, the fast is "donated" to a brahmin who observes it on your behalf
- 6On the 16th Monday: perform the full Udyapan
Udyapan — How to Conclude the Vrat
On the 16th Monday: prepare prasad of sheera (suji halwa). Invite 16 women or brahmin families. Read the Katha. Distribute prasad. Donate clothes and food. This concludes the vrat cycle.

Vedic Astrology & Solah Somvar Vrat
The 16-Monday vrat works on the Moon's 16 kalas (phases). Shiva's Moon (Chandrashekhara) is activated over 16 cycles, gradually dissolving Saturn's restriction on the Moon. This is a long-horizon remedy for persistent Moon-Saturn afflictions (Shani aspecting Moon, Moon in Capricorn or Aquarius, Sade Sati).
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Solah Somvar Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
