Shanivar Vrat
Shanivar (Saturday) Vrat is the primary remedy for Shani (Saturn) afflictions — including Sade Sati, Shani Mahadasha, and Mangal-Shani conjunction. Devotees offer sesame oil lamps, black sesame (til), mustard oil, and blue/black flowers to Shani. The fast is maintained through the day.
Significance of Shanivar Vrat
Saturday is Saturn's day. Saturn (Shani) is the most feared planet in Vedic astrology — his 7.5-year transit over the natal Moon (Sade Sati) is associated with hardship, delays, and challenges. Saturday Vrat, offerings of black sesame and oil, and Shani Chalisa recitation are the core prescribed remedies. The Shani Mahatmya (found in the Skanda Purana) records stories of how even the gods feared Saturn's gaze — and how sincere worship and ethical living are the only lasting protections.
Shanivar Vrat Katha
King Vikramaditya challenged the 9 planets to determine who was the greatest. Saturn, angered by being ranked last, promised to show his power within 12 years. Vikramaditya endured extraordinary hardship during Saturn's influence — becoming a prince's servant, falsely accused of theft, and losing a hand. After 12 years of sincere penance and Saturday fasting, Saturn relented and restored everything — even more than before. Vikramaditya said that Saturn's period had ultimately brought the deepest wisdom. Saturn's message is that he tests the righteous to purify them, not to destroy them.

Vedic Astrology & Shanivar Vrat
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius and governs time, karma, discipline, and justice. Its afflictions are among the most challenging in Vedic astrology. Saturday fasting, oil offerings, and charitable acts address Saturn's two primary demands: patience (the fast) and service (feeding the poor and animals). Those running Shani Mahadasha, Shani Antardasha, or experiencing Sade Sati should observe Saturday Vrat consistently.
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Shanivar Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
