Santoshi Mata Vrat is 16 consecutive Friday fasts in honor of Santoshi Mata — the goddess of contentment and satisfaction. The fast requires eating only raw chana (gram) and jaggery. Sour foods are strictly forbidden on fast days. After 16 Fridays, an Udyapan feast for women and children concludes the vrat.
Significance of Santoshi Mata Vrat
Santoshi Mata is a form of Durga-Lakshmi associated with contentment (santosh = contentment). She is the daughter of Ganesha in popular tradition. The vrat became nationally famous through the 1975 film "Jai Santoshi Maa," which depicted a woman's 16-Friday fast rewarding her with a happy family. Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha
A poor woman's husband was enslaved by a cruel merchant. She began the 16-Friday Santoshi Mata Vrat. Week by week, her husband's situation improved. Her sister-in-law — jealous — placed sour items in the prasad on the 15th Friday, almost breaking the vrat. On the 16th Friday, the woman completed the Udyapan sincerely. Santoshi Mata appeared and freed the husband, exposed the sister-in-law, and restored the family's prosperity.
How to Observe Santoshi Mata Vrat
