Pradosh Vrat
Pradosh Vrat is observed on the 13th tithi (Trayodashi) of both Krishna and Shukla Paksha. The Pradosh window is the 1.5 hours spanning sunset — approximately 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Shiva is worshipped during this window. Shani Pradosh (when Trayodashi falls on Saturday) is the most powerful.
Significance of Pradosh Vrat
Pradosh (twilight) is the period when Shiva dances his Tandava — between day and night, when neither governs. This liminal time is considered most sacred for Shiva worship. The Skanda Purana records that Shiva forgives all past sins of devotees who worship during Pradosh. All planets and cosmic forces pause to witness Shiva's Tandava at this hour. The Pradosh window applies to both evening Trayodashis of each month. When Trayodashi falls on specific days, the Pradosh carries additional names and significance: Shani Pradosh (Saturday), Soma Pradosh (Monday), Guru Pradosh (Thursday).
Pradosh Vrat Katha
A widowed brahmin woman and her son were starving during a drought. A sage saw their distress and told them to observe Pradosh Vrat with complete faith. They had nothing to offer but a flower plucked from the ground. Shiva was moved by their sincerity and appeared before them. He asked what they needed. The woman asked only that she and her son be able to worship Shiva always — Shiva granted this and also restored their prosperity. The story teaches that what matters in Pradosh Vrat is sincerity, not the scale of the offering.
How to Observe Pradosh Vrat
- 1Fast from morning until after the Pradosh Puja (approximately 6:30 PM)
- 2Prepare for Puja: take a bath, wear clean clothes, light a lamp
- 3During the Pradosh window (4:30–6:00 PM): bathe or anoint the Shivalinga with milk, water, honey, and curd
- 4Offer bael leaves, white flowers, and dhatura
- 5Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times and recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
- 6Perform aarti of Shiva; break the fast after the puja with light food
Udyapan — How to Conclude the Vrat
Pradosh Vrat has no fixed Udyapan — it is an ongoing monthly observance. Devotees who have maintained the vrat for a specific goal (e.g., recovery from illness, marriage) typically offer a special abhishek at a Shiva temple once the goal is achieved.

Vedic Astrology & Pradosh Vrat
The Pradosh window — twilight — is when the Sun and Moon are both in transition. In Vedic astrology, Trayodashi is associated with the 13th lunar mansion (Hasta) in some calculations and with transformation. Shani Pradosh specifically addresses Saturn's karma because Shiva controls Shani — Parvati appeased Shani's influence on the Shiva family through this Pradosh ritual.
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Pradosh Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
