Hartalika Teej Vrat
Hartalika Teej falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya (September). Unmarried and married women fast without food or water for 24 hours. Parvati and Shiva are worshipped using sand idols made fresh each year. The vrat is concluded the next morning with puja and immersion of the sand idols.
Significance of Hartalika Teej Vrat
Hartalika means "one who was taken away by friends" — Parvati's friends took her to a forest to prevent her forced marriage to Vishnu arranged by her father, so she could continue her tapasya for Shiva. She made a Shiva idol from sand and worshipped it through the night. Shiva appeared and accepted her. This story gave rise to the Hartalika Teej Vrat: making sand idols of Shiva and Parvati, worshipping them through the night without eating or sleeping, and immersing them the next morning.
Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha
Himavat (the Himalaya) had arranged Parvati's marriage to Lord Vishnu — a match any parent would consider ideal. But Parvati, devoted only to Shiva, asked her friend Saheli to take her away. In a deep forest, she fasted and formed a Shiva-Parvati idol from the damp riverbank sand. She worshipped it through the night with flowers, fruits, and songs. Shiva appeared and declared that he would accept her as his wife — the first instance of a devotee making a sand murti (not a consecrated idol) and receiving direct divine response.

- 3Worship with 16 sringaar (adornments) of the goddess: flowers, kumkum, kajal, bangles, sindoor, etc.

- 5Stay awake through the night (jagaran) — considered especially meritorious
- 6The next morning (Chaturthi), perform the final puja and immerse the sand idols in a river
- 7Break the fast only after the idols are immersed
Udyapan — How to Conclude the Vrat
Hartalika Teej Vrat, once begun, must be observed every year until the husband's death or after observing a specific number of years (usually 5 or 7). The Udyapan involves performing the complete puja one final time and then giving away the puja materials.

Vedic Astrology & Hartalika Teej Vrat
Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya falls when the Moon is waxing in the Bhadrapada month. Tritiya (3rd tithi) is associated with Gauri (Parvati) — making this the most natural tithi for her worship. The nightlong vigil and sand idol worship are believed to activate the 3rd house (siblings, courage) and 7th house (marriage) in the horoscope of the devotee.
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Hartalika Teej Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
