Shukravar Vrat
Shukravar (Friday) Vrat is observed in honor of Goddess Lakshmi and Venus (Shukra). Devotees wear white or pink, offer lotus flowers and white sweets to Lakshmi, and observe a partial or full fast. Santoshi Mata Vrat (16 consecutive Fridays) is a well-known version. It brings wealth, beauty, and relationship harmony.
Significance of Shukravar Vrat
Friday is Venus's day (Shukra = Venus, teacher of the asuras). Lakshmi — the goddess of wealth and beauty — is Venus's divine regent. Friday worship of Lakshmi is the most direct remedy for a weak Venus in the horoscope. It attracts love, financial abundance, artistic gifts, and marital happiness. The Santoshi Mata variant — 16 Friday fasts — became nationally famous through the 1975 Bollywood film "Jai Santoshi Maa" and draws enormous numbers of women.
Shukravar Vrat Katha
A poor woman and her husband struggled through poverty. A neighbor told her to observe the Friday Vrat of Santoshi Mata for 16 consecutive Fridays. The woman observed the vrat faithfully, eating only raw jaggery and gram (chana). On the 16th Friday, she performed the Udyapan — inviting women and distributing prasad. Her husband was promoted at work, debts were cleared, and their family prospered. The story teaches that Venus's blessings (Lakshmi's abundance) come through consistent, humble devotion.
How to Observe Shukravar Vrat
- 1Observe a partial fast — eat only one meal, or eat only jaggery and raw chana (for Santoshi Mata Vrat)
- 2Wear white or pink; offer white lotus, white flowers, or pink roses to Lakshmi
- 3Light a ghee lamp before Lakshmi's image; offer kheer, white sweets, or coconut
- 4Chant Lakshmi Ashtakam, Mahalaxmi Aarti, or the Lakshmi Chalisa

- 6Donate white items — rice, white cloth, sugar — to a brahmin or poor woman
