Ekadashi Vrat
Ekadashi Vrat is observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of both Krishna and Shukla Paksha every month — 24 times a year. It is the most meritorious vrat in the Vishnu tradition. Devotees fast and chant Vishnu's names. The most important Ekadashi is Nirjala Ekadashi in Jyeshtha month.
Significance of Ekadashi Vrat
Ekadashi (Sanskrit: the 11th) is considered the most sacred of all tithis. The Padma Purana devotes an entire section to Ekadashi — it records that Lord Vishnu sleeps on Shesha Naga (the cosmic serpent) for 4 months from Ashadha Ekadashi (Devshayani) and awakes on Kartik Ekadashi (Devutthana/Prabodhini). Observing Ekadashi fast is said to be equivalent to performing the Ashvamedha Yagna (horse sacrifice). The Bhavishya Purana records that Yudhishthira asked Krishna which vrat could liberate all sins — Krishna named Ekadashi as the supreme answer.
Ekadashi Vrat Katha
During the creation of the universe, Brahma told Vishnu that a formless demon named Mura was created from Vishnu's mental fatigue on Ekadashi. Vishnu fought Mura for a thousand years but could not defeat him. Vishnu retreated to a cave in the Himalayas to rest. As he slept, a beautiful woman of brilliant light emerged from his body and slew Mura. When Vishnu woke, he asked who had performed this feat. The luminous form — born from Vishnu's own shakti — stood before him. Vishnu named her Ekadashi and granted her the boon that anyone who fasts on her day would receive liberation.
How to Observe Ekadashi Vrat
- 1Observe a complete fast — nirjala (no water) for maximum merit, or phalahar (fruits and milk)
- 2Avoid all grains, pulses, non-veg, onion, garlic, and all stimulants
- 3Wake before sunrise; take a bath and offer prayers to Vishnu
- 4Spend the day chanting Vishnu's names — Om Namo Narayanaya or the Vishnu Sahasranama
- 5Read or listen to the Ekadashi Katha specific to that Ekadashi (each of the 24 has its own story)
- 6Stay awake through the night (jagaran) — especially meritorious on Ekadashi
- 7Break the fast the next day (Dwadashi) after the prescribed time — early breaking is inauspicious
Udyapan — How to Conclude the Vrat
There is no specific Udyapan for individual Ekadashis — the fast is simply broken on Dwadashi morning with a light meal. For Nirjala Ekadashi (the strictest Ekadashi of the year), breaking the fast with a sip of water on Dwadashi at the auspicious time is particularly significant.

Vedic Astrology & Ekadashi Vrat
Ekadashi falls on the 11th tithi, associated with Rudra in Vedic numerology — but its Vaishnava context elevates it to Vishnu's tithi. Jupiter, as the significator of Vishnu, is strengthened by Ekadashi fasting. Those in Ketu mahadasha (Ketu = moksha, Vishnu's domain) receive the most benefit.
“Fasting is often misunderstood as purely a physical act. In Vedic astrology, Ekadashi Vrat works at the planetary level — it directly addresses the deity who governs the weak or afflicted planet in your chart. I recommend always checking your current dasha period before committing to a long vrat cycle: fasting for the wrong deity during a strong benefic period can dilute the effect. A brief chart reading before starting saves months of misdirected effort.”
