Shravan Somvar Vrat are the Monday fasts observed during the month of Shravan (July-August) — when every Monday (Somvar = Moon's day = Shiva's day) becomes a Shiva fast of the highest order. The Shiva Purana identifies Shravan as the most sacred month for Shiva worship: during Shravan, the Sun transits Cancer (the Moon's sign) and the Moon is at its maximum distance from the Sun's drying heat — the entire month carries lunar quality, and Shiva's intimate connection with the Moon (Chandrashekhara — the one who wears the moon on his head) makes this month his most potent worship period. In 2026, Shravan month runs from approximately July 25 to August 22, containing 4 Shravan Somvars.

In Vedic astrology, the Moon (Chandra) and Shiva are intimately connected — Shiva carries Chandra on his head, controls Chandra's fate in mythology, and represents the capacity to absorb and integrate the Moon's emotional energy. Monday fasts in Shravan are the primary practice for Moon-related afflictions: emotional instability, mind-body connection problems, mother relationship issues, and all matters governed by the 4th house (home, emotional foundation). Why Is Shravan the Most Sacred Month for Shiva?

The Shiva Purana provides the mythological explanation: during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), the terrible poison Halahal emerged and threatened to destroy all creation. Shiva consumed this poison to protect the universe — and the poison settled in his throat, turning it blue (this is why Shiva is called Neelakantha — the blue-throated one). The moon on Shiva's head and the Ganga in his hair both helped cool the poison's heat. The month when this event is commemorated is Shravan — the monsoon month when the whole world is being "cooled" by rain, just as Shiva was cooled by water and moon. Every Monday of Shravan is therefore both a Moon worship day and a thanksgiving to Shiva for his cosmic self-sacrifice.

What Are the 4 Shravan Somvar Dates in 2026?

Shravan 2026 (approximate dates based on the Purnimant calendar):

| Shravan Somvar | Date | |---|---| | 1st Shravan Somvar | July 27, 2026 | | 2nd Shravan Somvar | August 3, 2026 | | 3rd Shravan Somvar | August 10, 2026 | | 4th Shravan Somvar | August 17, 2026 |

Note: Verify exact Shravan month boundaries with a 2026 Panchang, as dates vary slightly between North and South India.

Observing all 4 Shravan Somvars is the complete annual Shravan vrat cycle. Missing even one reduces the merit significantly in the Shiva Purana's accounting.

How to Observe Shravan Somvar Vrat

Each Monday during Shravan:

Morning: Wake before sunrise, bathe, wear white or light-colored clothing (Shiva's colors).

Fast: From sunrise. Permitted: water, fruits, dairy (milk, yogurt, ghee). No grains, pulses, non-vegetarian food.

Shiva Puja (any time during the day, ideally morning): 1. Light ghee lamp and incense before Shivalinga 2. Abhisheka (ritual bathing of the Shivalinga): water, milk, honey, yogurt, ghee — each poured separately 3. Apply Vibhuti (sacred ash) and Bilva leaves to the Shivalinga 4. Offer Dhatura flowers, Kaner, and white flowers 5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times or more 6. Recite Shravan Somvar Vrat Katha

Evening: Shiva Aarti. Break fast after sunset with fruits, then light vegetarian meal.

Special Monday practice: Visit a Shiva temple. During Shravan, Shiva temples conduct special Abhishek every Monday — many temples perform the Abhishek continuously from sunrise to sunset. The merit of witnessing or participating in a temple Abhishek during Shravan Somvar is described in the Shiva Purana as equivalent to performing the complete Shravan Vrat at home.

What Is the Shravan Somvar Vrat Katha?

The Shravan Somvar Vrat Katha (from the Shiva Purana): A wealthy merchant had lost all his wealth due to bad karma accumulated in his previous birth. He wandered, destitute, until he reached a Shiva temple on the first Shravan Monday. A Brahmin there narrated the power of Shravan Somvar Vrat to him. The merchant observed all 4 Shravan Mondays with complete devotion. On the last Monday, Shiva appeared in a dream and directed him to a specific location where his lost wealth was hidden. The merchant regained everything and more. This Katha establishes the primary function of Shravan Somvar Vrat: reversal of material loss and restoration of rightful prosperity.

Why Do Unmarried Women Observe Shravan Somvar Vrat?

Unmarried women (particularly in North India, Gujarat, and Maharashtra) observe Shravan Somvar Vrat specifically to obtain a husband with Shiva's qualities. The theological basis: Parvati performed Shravan austerities to win Shiva — the Shiva Purana and regional traditions explicitly connect women's Shravan Monday fasts to Parvati's precedent. The prayer offered on each Shravan Monday by unmarried women: "Parvati Mata, as you won Shiva through your Shravan devotion, please guide me to a husband who embodies Shiva's noble qualities."

What Is the Significance of Kanwar Yatra During Shravan?

The Kanwar Yatra is the annual pilgrimage during Shravan when millions of devotees (called Kanwariyas) walk to holy rivers — primarily the Ganga at Haridwar, Gangotri, and Sultanganj — to collect Ganga Jal (Ganga water) in decorated pots (Kanwars). They then walk, barefoot, to their local Shiva temple to pour the Ganga Jal over the Shivalinga. The Kanwar Yatra is the most visible public expression of Shravan's Shiva devotion. In 2026, the Kanwar Yatra runs during the Shravan month (approximately July 25 — August 22) with the peak on Shravan Shivratri (the Shivratri within Shravan month — the 14th tithi of the Krishna Paksha in Shravan).
