Devuthani Ekadashi 2026 falls on November 3, 2026 (Kartik Shukla Ekadashi). Devuthani means "the awakening of the gods" — specifically the awakening of Vishnu from his four-month Yoga Nidra (cosmic sleep) that began on Deva Shayani Ekadashi (July 25, 2026). When Vishnu awakens, the Chaturmas period ends and all auspicious ceremonies — marriages, house entries, new ventures — resume. This is the most important Ekadashi for marriages and family ceremonies: virtually all Hindu weddings in India are scheduled either before Deva Shayani Ekadashi (July) or after Devuthani Ekadashi (November).

In Vedic astrology, the Chaturmas period corresponds to the Sun moving through Cancer, Leo, Virgo, and Libra — all signs considered challenging for planetary conditions (Sun in Cancer/Leo is strong but in the monsoon's instability; Libra is Sun's sign of debilitation). Vishnu's awakening on Devuthani Ekadashi coincides with the Sun entering Scorpio — a stable, fixed sign — and the auspicious season of Kartik (October-November). What Is the Devuthani Ekadashi Story?

The Devuthani Ekadashi mythology from the Padma Purana (Uttara Khanda): When Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra on Deva Shayani Ekadashi, the entire cosmic machinery of auspicious creation pauses. During the four-month Chaturmas, Vishnu rests on Shesha Naga (the cosmic serpent) in the cosmic ocean. Brahma (creator) and Shiva (destroyer) continue their functions, but Vishnu's preserving/sustaining energy withdraws. On Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, Vishnu stirs. He is awakened by the devotional prayers of the Devas (gods) and devotees who have maintained their spiritual practices throughout Chaturmas. When he opens his eyes, the cosmos resumes its full auspicious functioning.

The Skanda Purana adds: Vishnu's awakening on this day is celebrated by the Tulsi Vivah — his symbolic marriage with the Tulsi (holy basil) plant. Vishnu, who slept through the traditional wedding season, performs his own symbolic marriage on the day he awakens. This establishes Devuthani Ekadashi as the marriage-auspicious day par excellence.

What Is Tulsi Vivah and How Is It Performed?

Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant (considered a manifestation of Lakshmi or the Tulsi goddess) with Shaligram (a black stone representing Vishnu). It is performed on Devuthani Ekadashi evening — November 3, 2026. The ritual:

1. Decorate the Tulsi plant with a yellow or red sari, jewelry, and sindoor 2. Place a Shaligram image next to the Tulsi 3. Perform the full wedding ceremony: Saptapadi (seven steps), exchange of flower garlands, tying the knot with a yellow thread 4. Recite Tulsi Vivah mantras: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and Om Tulsidevyai Namah 5. Feed the couple (prasad) with kheer (rice pudding) and sugar 6. Women who perform Tulsi Vivah are considered to have performed the merit of 1000 cow donations

The Tulsi Vivah is especially important for families with unmarried daughters — tradition holds that families who perform Tulsi Vivah see their daughters' marriage delays resolved within the year.

Why Do All Hindu Marriages Happen After Devuthani Ekadashi?

The Dharmasindu (a 16th-century digest of Hindu ceremonial law by Kashinatha Upadhyaya) states explicitly: no marriage Muhurta (auspicious time) exists during the Chaturmas period. This restriction applies from Deva Shayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi. The theological reason: Vishnu, the cosmic sustainer and the deity who presides over marriage and social order, is asleep. Marriages performed during his sleep lack his witnessing and blessing.

The result in practical terms: the November-December period immediately after Devuthani Ekadashi is the peak Indian wedding season. The concentration of weddings in November-December in India is directly traceable to this ancient Vedic calendar restriction.

What Happens to Chaturmas Vows on Devuthani Ekadashi?

During Chaturmas, many devotees take specific austerity vows: giving up a food item, maintaining daily Vishnu worship, reading one chapter of scripture daily. These vows end on Devuthani Ekadashi when Vishnu awakens and releases devotees from the Chaturmas discipline. The final day of Chaturmas vow-keeping is celebrated with special worship, donation (Dana), and breaking the specific abstinence maintained for four months.

How to Observe Devuthani Ekadashi 2026

Date: November 3, 2026

Fast: Standard Ekadashi fast (no grains, pulses, or regular salt). Fruits, dairy, and permitted vegetables.

Special practices for Devuthani Ekadashi: 1. Perform Tulsi Vivah in the evening (see above) 2. Light 11 lamps around the Tulsi plant 3. Ring bells to "wake" Vishnu — temple bells, hand bells, or conch shells 4. Chant: Uttishtha Uttishtha Govinda ("Arise, arise, Govinda") — the traditional waking hymn for Vishnu on this day 5. Complete any Chaturmas vows and formally close them with prayer 6. Give Dana (charity) — specifically donate grains, clothing, or money to Brahmins or the needy 7. Celebrate with family — Devuthani Ekadashi is a joyful celebration, not a severe austerity
