Vedic astrology has always been a practical science. Its remedies — mantras, gemstones, fasting, and charity — exist not as ritual performance but as precise methods for shifting the energetic relationship between a person and a planetary influence. Among all remedies, charity (daan) is considered by the classical texts to be among the most powerful. Why? Because daan is an act of genuine surrender — you give something of real value without expectation of return. This selfless act generates merit (punya) that neutralizes karmic debt associated with difficult planetary placements. This guide gives you the exact items to donate for each of the nine planets, on what day, at what time, and to whom.

Why Does Planetary Charity Work in Vedic Astrology?

The principle rests on two Vedic concepts. The first is resonance — each planet has specific material correspondences (colors, metals, grains, fabrics) that vibrate at that planet's frequency. When you donate items associated with a planet, you create a resonance that either strengthens a weak planet (if the donation is given with devotion) or propitiates an afflicted planet (if the donation is an offering to that planet's deity). The second principle is the 5th house as Purva Punya (merit from past lives and virtuous acts) and the 11th house as the house of gains from right action. Charity activates both houses, building merit that offsets karmic obstacles.

To identify which planets in your chart need remediation, use the birth chart calculator and note which planets are weak, debilitated, or under malefic influence. Those are the planets whose charity remedies you should prioritize.

What to Donate for the Sun?

The Sun rules authority, vitality, the father, career, and the government. Sun's charity is performed on Sunday during the Sun's hora (planetary hour — approximately the first hour after sunrise on Sunday).

Items to donate for the Sun:

  • Wheat and wheat products (chapati, atta)
  • Copper vessel or copper coin
  • Red cloth or orange fabric
  • Jaggery (gur) — unrefined cane sugar
  • Red flowers, particularly red roses or marigolds
  • Ruby (if able) or red glass bead
  • Gold — even a small amount

Who to give to: Donate to a respected elderly man, a government official, a temple, or a person with authority and dignity. Giving to a father-figure resonates strongly with the Sun.

Why it works: The Sun rules the father, the ego, and the soul's expression. Donation to authority figures with items of Sun's color and metal creates a karmic acknowledgment of the Sun's principle — it strengthens your relationship with authority and your own inner authority.

What to Donate for the Moon?

The Moon rules the mind, emotions, mother, water, and public. Moon's charity is performed on Monday, ideally during the Moon's hora.

Items to donate for the Moon:

  • Rice (raw white rice or cooked rice)
  • White cloth or white cotton fabric
  • Silver coin or silver vessel
  • Milk and milk products (ghee, curd)
  • Camphor
  • White flowers (jasmine, white lotus)
  • Conch shell (shankha)

Who to give to: Donate to women (especially mothers, widows, or women in need), to the sick who are in hospital, and to those who handle water (fishermen, sailors). Giving to one's own mother is among the most direct Moon donations possible.

Why it works: The Moon governs the mother and the public. Giving white, nourishing, cooling items to women and the vulnerable aligns you with the Moon's highest expression of nurturing and care, strengthening the Moon's capacity in your chart.

What to Donate for Mars?

Mars rules courage, brothers, land, blood, the military, and physical energy. Mars's charity is performed on Tuesday during Mars hora.

Items to donate for the Moon:

  • Red lentils (masoor dal) — Mars's primary grain
  • Red cloth or red fabric
  • Copper vessel (shared with Sun but Mars's version is unpolished)
  • Coral or red glass bead
  • Red flowers
  • Swords, tools, or iron implements (to police, firemen, or soldiers)
  • Sweets made with jaggery

Who to give to: Donate to soldiers, police officers, firefighters, younger brothers, or those engaged in physical labor and protection. Giving to a surgeon (Mars rules sharp instruments and surgery) is also highly effective.

Why it works: Mars's difficulties often manifest as conflict, accidents, or excessive aggression. Honoring Mars's protective and courageous nature by serving its archetypal representatives realigns the Mars energy toward its dharmic expression.

What to Donate for Mercury?

Mercury rules intellect, communication, trade, education, and children. Mercury's charity is performed on Wednesday during Mercury hora.

Items to donate for Mercury:

  • Green mung dal (moong dal) — Mercury's grain
  • Green cloth (emerald green fabric)
  • Books, pens, notebooks, and educational materials
  • Green vegetables and leafy greens
  • Brass or bronze vessel
  • Emerald (if affordable) or green glass

Who to give to: Donate educational materials to students and schools. Give books to libraries. Support teachers, writers, and scholars. Donating to young children is highly effective for Mercury. Giving to a person who is both intelligent and humble (Mercury's ideal type) creates strong resonance.

Why it works: Mercury rules the exchange of information and the student-teacher relationship. Supporting learning and communication generates Mercury merit that improves your own intellectual clarity, business acumen, and communication abilities.

What to Donate for Jupiter?

Jupiter is the most auspicious planet and the planet of dharma, wisdom, abundance, and expansion. Jupiter's charity is performed on Thursday during Jupiter hora — the most benefic time for charity overall.

Items to donate for Jupiter:

  • Yellow dal (chana dal or yellow lentils)
  • Yellow cloth or saffron-colored fabric
  • Gold — even trace amounts have powerful effect
  • Turmeric (haldi)
  • Banana and banana products
  • Books on philosophy, religion, or sacred texts
  • Sweets made with gram flour (besan) and ghee

Who to give to: Donate to a Brahmin (priest, teacher, or learned person), to a guru or spiritual teacher, to a temple, or to anyone who embodies wisdom and dharma. Giving to a senior man, especially a father-figure, is also strongly aligned with Jupiter.

Why it works: Jupiter is the Guru of the cosmos. Supporting wisdom-keepers and sacred knowledge through material donations creates a direct punya that Jupiter reciprocates with blessings of abundance, righteous guidance, and protection.

What to Donate for Venus?

Venus rules beauty, relationships, vehicles, luxury, the arts, and the creative life-force. Venus's charity is performed on Friday during Venus hora.

Items to donate for Venus:

  • White rice (raw)
  • White cloth or silken fabric
  • Sugar (pure white crystallized sugar)
  • Cow or cow-related items (milk products, feed for cows)
  • Perfume, flowers, and beauty items given to women
  • Ornaments and jewelry given to married women
  • Ghee

Who to give to: Donate to women, particularly married women and young women. Give to cows (feeding cows is a direct Venus act). Support artists, musicians, and those in the beauty and fashion trades. Giving to one's wife or romantic partner qualifies as Venus charity.

Why it works: Venus governs love and beauty. Honoring and nourishing women, cows (sacred in Vedic tradition), and the arts builds the vibrational quality that Venus bestows — harmony, affection, and aesthetic refinement in your own life.

What to Donate for Saturn?

Saturn is the planet of karma, discipline, service, the poor, and the aged. Saturn's charity is performed on Saturday during Saturn hora — this is the most important charity for karmic clearing and for those in Sade Sati.

Items to donate for Saturn:

  • Black sesame (kala til) — Saturn's most important offering
  • Black cloth or dark fabric
  • Iron items (nails, vessels, tools)
  • Mustard oil (sarso ka tel) — offer in a lamp or donate the oil
  • Blankets and warm clothing for the poor
  • Shoes and footwear for those who have none
  • Urad dal (black lentils)

Who to give to: Saturn rules the marginalized — the poor, the disabled, the elderly, servants, and those doing menial work (sweepers, cobblers, sanitation workers). Donating directly to these individuals is Saturn's highest charity. Giving to leather-workers, iron-smiths, and farmers is also aligned.

Why it works: Saturn's karmic principle is that the universe keeps accounts. When you give to those whom society overlooks, you correct the imbalance that Saturn's afflictions represent. The classical texts say that those suffering under Saturn must become servants of others — charity to the most marginalized is the most direct enactment of this.

What to Donate for Rahu?

Rahu has no rulership of a weekday in the classical system but is traditionally addressed on Saturday or during Rahu Hora on any day. Rahu's charity has an unconventional quality matching Rahu's nature.

Items to donate for Rahu:

  • Blue cloth (dark blue or indigo fabric)
  • Urad dal (shared with Saturn)
  • Black items generally
  • Coconut
  • Blankets and dark-colored clothing
  • Items for those considered outcasts or on the social margins

Who to give to: Donate to those who are socially marginalized in unconventional ways — foreigners, migrants, people of mixed or ambiguous backgrounds, social outcasts, and those who work with technology (Rahu's modern domain). Rahu also responds to donations to healers and doctors.

Why it works: Rahu represents the unfamiliar, the foreign, and the unacknowledged. Serving those who exist outside conventional social categories creates a karmic acknowledgment of Rahu's teaching: that the other and the unfamiliar are not to be feared but embraced.

What to Donate for Ketu?

Ketu is addressed on Tuesday or Saturday — it shares characteristics with both Mars (its dispositor relationship) and Saturn (its karmic depth). Ketu's charity has a spiritual and otherworldly quality.

Items to donate for Ketu:

  • Multi-colored blankets or cloth
  • Sesame (shared with Saturn, but multi-colored fabric distinguishes this)
  • Service to dogs — feeding stray dogs is a primary Ketu remedy
  • Donation to wanderers, pilgrims, and ascetics
  • Feeding birds (crows are particularly associated with Ketu and with the ancestors)
  • Items for spiritual seekers and monks

Who to give to: Feed stray dogs and crows. Give to sadhus, wandering ascetics, and pilgrims. Donate to animal shelters. Ketu's energy is moksha-oriented and beyond social categories, so giving to those who are between worlds — the renunciate, the pilgrim, the homeless spiritual seeker — resonates most deeply.

Why it works: Ketu represents liberation from material attachment. The act of giving to those who are themselves detached from material security creates a resonance with Ketu's highest teaching — that the universe provides, and your clinging is unnecessary.

What Is the Importance of Planetary Hora Timing?

Every hour of every day is ruled by one of the seven planets in a fixed sequence called the hora. The first hora of each day is ruled by that day's planet (e.g., Saturday's first hora is Saturn hora). Donating during the hora of the planet you are propitiating amplifies the effect significantly. Hora calculators are available online — enter your location and date to find the exact hora windows.

How Do the 5th and 11th Houses Connect to Charity?

In Vedic astrology, the 5th house represents Purva Punya — the merit accumulated in past lives through virtuous acts, including charity. When you donate with genuine selflessness, you add to your 5th house merit account, which returns in the form of good fortune, children, creative gifts, and spiritual capacity. The 11th house represents gains from right action — including the long-term material and social returns of dharmic living. Astrologers often note that people with afflicted 5th or 11th houses benefit enormously from sustained charitable practice.
