Before examining the 7 specific warning signs, understand that affliction alone does not guarantee divorce. The overall chart strength, Navamsha analysis, and the running dasha must all align. These indicators point to stress in marriage, and some charts show the stress resolving through other means — prolonged separation, chronic conflict, or deep incompatibility rather than legal divorce.

> When the 7th house receives aspects or occupancy from multiple malefics — Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, or the Sun — simultaneously without any benefic protection, the marriage becomes highly unstable. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) identifies a malefic-occupied 7th as the foremost indicator of marital suffering.

The 7th house must be examined for the planets placed within it and the aspects it receives. The classical malefics — Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu, and Ketu — create stress when placed in the 7th. When two or more malefics occupy the 7th simultaneously, the marriage encounters repeated crises.

Saturn in the 7th delays marriage and brings coldness, distance, and responsibility-based relationships rather than emotional warmth. Mars in the 7th (forming Mangal dosha) adds aggression, impulsiveness, and a tendency toward power struggles. The Sun in the 7th damages the spouse's ego and creates dominance conflicts. Rahu in the 7th creates an unusual, unstable, or foreign-influenced marriage. Ketu in the 7th brings detachment and spiritual incompatibility.

The specific problem arises when the 7th house has no benefic aspect. Jupiter's aspect on the 7th from the 5th, 9th, or 11th house protects the marriage significantly. Venus aspecting the 7th adds harmony. When these protections are absent and malefics dominate, divorce becomes a strong possibility during specific dasha periods.

Among all Mangal dosha placements, the 7th and 8th are the most potent for creating marital instability. Mars in the 7th brings direct aggression into the partnership. The partner becomes a target for Mars's fiery, domineering energy. Arguments escalate into physical confrontation in extreme cases, and the native often attracts a spouse who mirrors this aggressive quality.

Mars in the 8th house affects the longevity of the marriage. The 8th house governs the duration of the union, and Mars placed there — especially if it is the lord of malefic houses — damages longevity. B.V. Raman in his works extensively discussed how Mars in the 8th, particularly for women, creates widowhood or early separation indicators.

The classical exception: when both partners in a marriage have Mangal dosha, the dosha cancels. Additionally, Mars placed with a strong Jupiter or aspected by Jupiter loses much of its destructive potential for marriage.

> A Saturn-Mars conjunction anywhere in the chart, when it involves the 7th house or its lord, creates intense marital tension. Saturn and Mars are natural enemies — Saturn's cold, delaying energy combined with Mars's hot, aggressive force produces a marriage marked by control battles, resentment, and eventual separation.

When Saturn and Mars are conjunct in the 7th house, the marriage becomes a battlefield of control and aggression. Saturn wants order, discipline, and slow progress. Mars wants immediate action and dominance. These two forces in conjunction create a marriage where one partner controls through cold authority and the other through anger.

When Saturn aspects the 7th lord and Mars also aspects the 7th lord, the same tension applies even without direct conjunction. The 7th lord caught between Saturn's compression and Mars's heat produces a weakened marital significator unable to sustain a harmonious union.

The Phaladeepika states that malefics in angles and trines from the 7th house create marital obstacles. A Saturn-Mars conjunction in the 4th house (which is the 10th from the 7th) or the 10th house (which is the 4th from the 7th) therefore also creates pressure on marital stability.

The classical texts describe Rahu in the 7th as creating a spouse from a different caste, religion, or social background — in modern terms, this translates to relationships that face social or family opposition.

More critically, Rahu creates illusion. The native's perception of the spouse during the early marriage does not match reality. As Rahu's veil lifts over time, the disillusionment that follows drives separation. Rahu also has a natural signification of separation, breaking, and unconventional paths — all of which are problematic in the context of the 7th house.

Rahu in the 7th also aspects the lagna directly (as Rahu always aspects the 7th from its position — in this case, the 1st house), which can damage the native's sense of self in relationships, leading to codependency or identity loss that eventually forces a separation for self-preservation.

> Ketu in the 7th house creates spiritual detachment from the marriage and the spouse. Unlike Rahu's obsessive attachment followed by disillusionment, Ketu produces a fundamental disinterest in partnership from the outset. When Venus is debilitated (in Virgo), combust (too close to the Sun), retrograde, or placed in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house without strength, the capacity for sustained marital happiness weakens significantly. For men, Venus represents the wife, marital happiness, and the capacity for love and romance. For women, Jupiter plays this role. When Venus is weak, the native's relationship energy itself is compromised — they struggle to give or receive love in ways their partner needs.

Venus becomes combust when within 10 degrees of the Sun. A combust Venus loses its directional strength and the ability to express its natural qualities of beauty, harmony, and affection. A severely afflicted 7th house may remain stable for decades until the dasha of the 7th lord, a malefic in the 7th, or a planet forming a Papakartari yoga around the 7th house activates the latent affliction. The dasha system transforms potential into event.

This is the most critical distinction in Vedic astrology for divorce timing: the natal chart shows potential, but the dasha period determines manifestation. Many people with severely afflicted 7th houses live in stable marriages for years and face crisis only when a triggering dasha arrives.

The most dangerous dasha periods for marital stability include: the dasha of a malefic placed in the 7th house, the dasha of the 7th lord when it is placed in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house (dusthana), the dasha of Saturn when Saturn afflicts the 7th house or its lord, the dasha of Rahu or Ketu when these nodes are in the 7th house or conjunct the 7th lord, and the dasha of the 6th or 12th lord when they are connected to the 7th house.

The Antardasha (sub-period) is equally important. A Saturn main period with a Rahu sub-period, when both afflict the 7th house, is a classic combination that triggers separation. The transit (gochar) of Saturn over the 7th house or over natal Venus simultaneously with a difficult dasha further confirms timing.

All seven warning signs must be read in combination, not isolation. A single malefic in the 7th house with strong benefic aspects does not guarantee divorce. A weak Venus compensated by a strong Jupiter and Venus in Navamsha does not guarantee marital failure.

The Navamsha chart (D-9) is the decisive tool for marriage. Even if the natal Rashi chart shows afflictions, a strong Navamsha with benefics supporting the 7th house gives the marriage resilience. The Navamsha is described in classical texts as the chart that reveals the true quality of marriage — the Rashi chart shows the outer circumstances, the Navamsha shows the inner experience.

Classical texts like the BPHS advise examining: the 7th house in both Rashi and Navamsha, the 7th lord's placement in both charts, Venus and Jupiter's condition, the Upapada Lagna (UL) and its lord, and the active dasha at the time of marriage and at the time of any crisis.
