Shadbala — literally "six strengths" — is the classical Vedic system for measuring the relative power of each planet in a horoscope. While beginner astrology relies on simpler indicators (sign, house, aspects), serious predictive work uses Shadbala scores to determine which planets will actually deliver the results their position suggests, and which look strong on the surface but lack the underlying force to manifest their potential.

This guide walks through each of the six Shadbala components, the calculation logic for each, the threshold scores that distinguish weak from strong planets, and how to use Shadbala practically in chart reading — particularly when assessing dasha results, planetary dispositors, and the timing of major life events.

Shadbala is a quantitative system from classical jyotish (codified primarily in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Saravali) that assigns each planet a numeric strength score based on six independent factors. The total score for each planet, expressed in units called "rupas" (1 rupa = 60 virupas), is compared against a threshold to determine whether the planet is functionally strong or weak in the chart.

The six components — Sthana Bala (positional strength), Dik Bala (directional strength), Kala Bala (temporal strength), Cheshta Bala (motional strength), Naisargika Bala (natural strength), and Drik Bala (aspectual strength) — each capture a different dimension of how planetary force is generated.
