Om Bhaskaraya Vidmahe, Mahadyutikaraya Dhimahi, Tanno Aditya Prachodayat (ॐ भास्कराय विद्महे महाद्युतिकराय धीमहि, तन्नो आदित्यः प्रचोदयात्।)

Meaning: "We know Bhaskara (the illuminator); we meditate on the great light-maker; may Aditya (the son of Aditi) inspire us."

The Surya Gayatri follows the three-part Gayatri format: knowing, meditation, and inspiration. It is less commonly used than the Sun Bija Mantra but is considered more refined — it addresses the Sun's quality of illuminating consciousness (jnana light) rather than purely physical vitality. Om Jabaakusuma Sankasham Kashyapeyam Mahadyutim, Tamo'rim Sarva Papagnam Pranatosmi Divakaram (ॐ जपाकुसुमसंकाशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिं, तमोरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम्।)

Meaning: "I bow to the day-maker who is red as the japakusuma (hibiscus) flower, son of Kashyapa, of great radiance, the enemy of darkness, the destroyer of all sins."

This mantra appears in the Vishnu Dharmottara Purana as the primary Sun meditation verse. The comparison to japakusuma (red hibiscus) is precise: offering red hibiscus to Surya while reciting this mantra creates a direct vibrational resonance between the offering and the deity. Translation: "Aditya is the first name, Divakara the second, Bhaskara the third, Prabhakara the fourth, Sahasramsha the fifth, Tridashadhipa the sixth, Martanda the seventh, Vibhakara the eighth, Mahadiptha the ninth, Savitri the tenth, Aditya the eleventh, and Surya the twelfth."

Chanting these 12 names 12 times daily (once per name) is the simplified version of the full Surya Sahasranama practice — completing the complete cycle of solar energy in approximately 5 minutes.

The most powerful practice context for Surya mantras: face east (toward the rising sun), stand outdoors or near a window with direct morning light, offer water with cupped hands to the sun (Arghya) while chanting, then chant the mantra 108 times seated on a red mat. The physical orientation toward the actual sun creates a literal energy connection that enhances the vibrational effect of the mantra.

The ideal timing: sunrise is non-negotiable for serious Sun remedy practice. The Surya Upasana Vidhi texts specify that the mantra chanted at the exact moment of sunrise carries 12 times the potency of the same mantra chanted at any other time.
