The Rahu mantra is Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah (ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः) — the primary Vedic remedy for Rahu energy. Rahu (the north lunar node) is not a physical planet but the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic plane — yet it exerts one of the most powerful influences in the birth chart. Rahu governs: obsession, foreign connections, technology and innovation, sudden reversals of fortune, unconventional paths, and the desires inherited from past lives. Rahu Mahadasha (18 years) is the most disruptive of all Dasha periods — bringing both extraordinary opportunities and unexpected crises. Use the birth chart calculator to see how this plays out in your personal Vedic chart.

In 2026, anyone born between certain date ranges (based on the 18-year Rahu cycle) may be in Rahu Mahadasha — and millions more experience Rahu Antardasha within other Mahadashas. The Rahu mantra directly stabilizes Rahu's erratic energy. Check your Rahu placement and current Dasha with the free Dasha Calculator.

The Complete Rahu Mantra

Primary bija mantra: ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः। Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah.

Rahu Gayatri: ॐ शिरोरूपाय विद्महे, अमृतेशाय धीमहि, तन्नो राहुः प्रचोदयात्। Om Shirorupaya Vidmahe, Amriteshaya Dhimahi, Tanno Rahuh Prachodayat. "We know the head-form (Rahu is just a head); we meditate on the lord of nectar (Rahu swallowed the nectar of immortality); may Rahu inspire us."

Rahu Stotram key verse: अर्धकाय महावीर्यं चन्द्रादित्यविमर्दनम्। सिंहिकागर्भसम्भूतं तं राहुं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥ Ardhakaya Mahaveerya Chandraditya Vimardhana, Simhika Garbha Sambhutam Tam Rahum Pranamamyaham. "I bow to Rahu — the half-bodied great hero, destroyer of Sun and Moon (cause of eclipses), born from the womb of Simhika (a demon woman)."

What Is Rahu in Vedic Astrology?

Rahu is the severed head of the demon Svarbhanu — who disguised himself as a god and drank the nectar of immortality (amrita) during the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning). The Sun and Moon recognized the imposter and told Vishnu, who severed the demon's head with his Sudarshana Chakra (discus). But by that time the demon had already swallowed the nectar and become immortal — so his severed head and body both survived as Rahu (head) and Ketu (tail). The mythology establishes Rahu's nature: he achieved immortality through deception, he is driven by unsatisfied desires, he targets the Sun (authority) and Moon (consciousness), and he remains forever separated from his body — hence his association with things that are severed from their natural context (foreign lands, unconventional careers, technology).

When Is Rahu Mantra Most Needed?

Rahu is most active and most challenging when: 1. In the 1st house (identity confusion, difficulty knowing who you are) 2. In the 5th house (affecting children, creativity, speculation) 3. In the 7th house (marriage problems, foreign partners, unusual relationships) 4. In the 8th house (hidden crises, sudden transformations) 5. Conjunct the Moon (emotional instability, phobias, obsessive thinking) 6. Conjunct the Sun (authority challenges, identity crisis) 7. In Rahu Mahadasha (18 years of amplified Rahu energy)

The specific experiences that signal Rahu affliction: sudden unexplained reversals of fortune after periods of success; obsessive thoughts that cannot be controlled by willpower; fear without specific cause; attraction to foreign or unconventional things at the expense of existing stability; and the specific feeling of "not knowing who I really am."

Rahu Mantra Practice — Saturday Routine

Saturday is the primary day for Rahu mantra practice. The Saturday Rahu routine: wear dark blue or grey clothes (Rahu's colours), light a sesame oil lamp (shared with Saturn — Rahu and Saturn have similar dark qualities), offer black sesame seeds and blue flowers, recite Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah 108 times, state a Sankalp naming the specific Rahu issue (Mahadasha stabilization, reducing obsessive thinking, career in technology or foreign work), close with Pranam.

For Rahu Mahadasha specifically: adding the Durga Chalisa or Mahalakshmi Mantra to the Saturday session helps because Rahu is pacified by the divine feminine energy that it inherently lacks (Rahu is a masculine, ego-driven force; the Goddess principle provides what it needs).

How Does Rahu Mantra Help with Rahu Mahadasha?

Rahu Mahadasha's 18-year duration makes it the longest continuous single-planet period in the Vimshottari system. During this period, Rahu's energy dominates all major life themes. The mantra doesn't eliminate Rahu's energy — which would remove its positive qualities (technology, foreign connections, unconventional success) along with the negative. Instead, the mantra channels Rahu's energy constructively: from compulsive/addictive patterns toward focused ambition; from confusion toward strategic clarity; from reckless experimentation toward innovate but grounded action.

Most successful people in technology, foreign trade, and unconventional fields are running Rahu Dasha during their peak years — Rahu's energy when properly directed is among the most productive in the chart.
