History and Origin of Ganesh Mantra
Ganesha's role as the first deity invoked in every Hindu prayer is established in the Ganapatya Atharva Shirsha Upanishad — a text that identifies Ganesha with Brahman (the absolute reality) and establishes him as the beginning and end of all worship. The tradition of invoking Ganesha first (Prathamapuja) is so universal that even in Vaishnava or Shaiva temples, a Ganesha shrine is placed at the entrance.
Ganesha's bija syllable Gan (गं) is from the Ganapatya tradition and is documented in the Mantramahodadhi and other Agamic texts. The syllable encodes Ganesha's two primary functions: obstacle-removal (Vi-ghna-nasha-na — destroyer of obstacles) and the granting of intellect (Buddhi). Gan is the first sound of both Ganesha and Ganita (mathematics) — the connection between the deity and the science of numbers reflects his domain over both material calculation and cosmic intelligence.
How to Recite Ganesh Mantra — Correct Practice
Om Gan Ganpataye Namo Namah is chanted at the beginning of every Hindu prayer, Puja, wedding, business opening, and major event. The Vakratunda Mahakaya shloka is recited specifically when beginning a new project, before examinations, and at the start of each day's work. These two mantras together form the universal opening invocation that applies to every other mantra in this collection — before chanting Hanuman Chalisa, Gayatri Mantra, or any other prayer, invoking Ganesha first ensures the practice is obstacle-free.
Ganesh Chaturthi (August/September, the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadra month) is Ganesha's primary festival. The 10-day celebration involves daily 108-repetition sessions of the Ganesh Mantra, the Atharvashirsha, and the Ganesh Aarti.

Ganesh Mantra as a Vedic Astrology Remedy
In Vedic astrology, Ganesha is associated with Ketu — the south lunar node known as the "tail of the serpent." Ketu creates sudden losses, spiritual crises, dissatisfaction with material life, and confusion about direction. Ganesha worship is prescribed for Ketu Mahadasha, for those with Ketu in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house (the kendra houses), and as a general practice before beginning any astrological remedy — since Ganesha must remove obstacles before other planetary remedies can work effectively.
The Ganesha-Ketu connection is also expressed in Ganesha's curved trunk (which resembles Ketu's serpentine form) and his single tusk (representing the one-pointed discrimination needed to navigate Ketu's spiritualizing — and often disorienting — energy).

Frequently Asked Questions
Ganesha is the Lord of all beginnings and the remover of obstacles. The Ganapatya Atharva Shirsha Upanishad establishes that no prayer or action can succeed without Ganesha's blessing first. Even other deities invoke Ganesha before their own worship — this universal first-position is why Ganesha shrines are always placed at the entrance of temples.
