Ugadi (from Sanskrit Yuga = age, Adi = beginning) marks the start of a new Hindu lunar year (Samvatsara). According to the Brahma Purana, Lord Brahma began creation on this day — the first day of Chaitra Shukla. The year is named after one of 60 recurring samvatsaras in the Brihaspati cycle, each governed by a planet and carrying its own astrological character. Ugadi is observed in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, while Maharashtrians celebrate the same day as Gudi Padwa — raising a Gudi (decorated pole) to mark Rama's victory. Sindhis observe Cheti Chand (birthday of Saint Jhulelal) simultaneously. In Manipur, it is Sajibu Nongmapanba. The Story Behind Ugadi
On the first day of Chaitra, Brahma stretched time across 60-year cycles (Samvatsara Chakra), each year individually named and carrying its own character as described in astrological almanacs (Panchangam). The day is also linked to the return of Rama to Ayodhya: as Diwali marks his return in Kartik, Ugadi aligns with Rama Navami nine days later. Maharashtrian tradition holds that the Gudi was raised by Rama's subjects to welcome him home after Lanka. The tasting of Ugadi Pachadi — raw mango (sourness), neem flowers (bitterness), jaggery (sweetness), tamarind (tanginess), green chilli (heat), and salt (savouriness) — is a direct philosophical teaching: the new year will bring all six flavors of life. The act of consciously tasting all six at the very start of the year is a commitment to accept whatever comes.
