Basant Panchami marks the arrival of spring (Basant) and the birthday of Goddess Saraswati. The festival is especially important for students, musicians, artists, and those in creative professions. Yellow is worn on this day — it represents the yellow mustard flowers blooming across North India in late January and early February, a visual herald of spring. In Bengal and West Bengal, elaborate clay Saraswati idols are installed in schools and colleges. Students place their books and instruments before the goddess for her blessing.
The Story Behind Basant Panchami
After creating the universe, Brahma found it silent, formless, and lifeless. He felt something was missing and sprinkled water from his kamandalu (water pot). A radiant goddess appeared — four-armed, holding a veena (lute), book, and lotus, seated on a white lotus. She played the veena and gave voice, knowledge, and beauty to all creation. Brahma called her Saraswati — the goddess of speech (Vak), wisdom (Jnana), and the arts. The day of her emergence is celebrated as Basant Panchami. The Rigveda's Saraswati Sukta is the oldest literary tribute to her.
