Maha Shivratri — the Great Night of Shiva — falls on Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi. In 2025 it is 26 Feb; in 2026 it is 15 Feb. Devotees fast the entire day and night, performing puja in 4 praharas (3-hour windows) through the night. The Shivalinga is bathed with milk, honey, and water.
Maha Shivratri 2027 — Significance & Celebration
Maha Shivratri marks the night when Shiva performed his Tandava Nritya (cosmic dance) and the night of Shiva-Shakti's divine union. The Skanda Purana records that on this night, a column of fire (Jyotirlinga) appeared between Brahma and Vishnu as they disputed who was supreme — Shiva emerged from the column, declaring himself the source of both. The night of Chaturdashi (14th day) in Krishna Paksha is called Shivratri every month, but Phalguna's Chaturdashi is Maha Shivratri — the most powerful. The 12 Jyotirlingas in India draw millions of pilgrims on this night.
A hunter named Suswara was stranded in the forest on Shivratri night and climbed a bael (bilva) tree to escape a tiger. To stay awake and prevent falling, he plucked bael leaves and dropped them through the night — unknowingly onto a Shivalinga at the tree's base. He also did not eat or drink — observing an unintentional fast. By morning, Shiva was so pleased by the unintentional puja (bael leaves + fast + nightlong vigil) that he blessed the hunter with liberation. This story, from the Shiva Purana, is why the offerings on Shivratri — bael leaves, water, and all-night wakefulness — are considered the most potent. Even an accidental Shivratri worship brings liberation.
How to Celebrate Maha Shivratri in 2027
- 1Fast for the full 24 hours (water and fruit only, or nirjala)
- 2Visit a Shiva temple and perform abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Shivalinga with milk, honey, rosewater, curd, and water
- 3Offer bael (bilva) leaves, white flowers (dhatura, white chrysanthemum), and bhasma (sacred ash)
- 4Perform puja in 4 praharas — at 6 PM, 9 PM, 12 AM, and 3 AM
- 5Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times in each prahar; recite Shiv Chalisa and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
