Maha Shivratri marks the night when Shiva performed his Tandava Nritya (cosmic dance) and the night of Shiva-Shakti's divine union. The Skanda Purana records that on this night, a column of fire (Jyotirlinga) appeared between Brahma and Vishnu as they disputed who was supreme — Shiva emerged from the column, declaring himself the source of both. The night of Chaturdashi (14th day) in Krishna Paksha is called Shivratri every month, but Phalguna's Chaturdashi is Maha Shivratri — the most powerful. The 12 Jyotirlingas in India draw millions of pilgrims on this night.
A hunter named Suswara was stranded in the forest on Shivratri night and climbed a bael (bilva) tree to escape a tiger. To stay awake and prevent falling, he plucked bael leaves and dropped them through the night — unknowingly onto a Shivalinga at the tree's base. He also did not eat or drink — observing an unintentional fast. By morning, Shiva was so pleased by the unintentional puja (bael leaves + fast + nightlong vigil) that he blessed the hunter with liberation. This story, from the Shiva Purana, is why the offerings on Shivratri — bael leaves, water, and all-night wakefulness — are considered the most potent. Even an accidental Shivratri worship brings liberation.
How to Celebrate Maha Shivratri in 2026
