Guru Purnima 2026 — Key Details
Guru Purnima falls on the full moon (Purnima) of Ashadha month — 10 Jul 2025, 29 Jul 2026. It honors the Guru (teacher) and commemorates the birth of Sage Vyasa — the author of the Mahabharata, Puranas, and the systematizer of the Vedas.
Guru Purnima 2026 — Significance & Celebration
Guru Purnima is the day to honor and express gratitude to one's spiritual or academic teacher. Vyasa (Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa) — the sage who compiled and organized the Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, and composed the 18 Maha Puranas — was born on Ashadha Purnima. His contributions to Indian civilization are unmatched, hence this full moon is also called Vyasa Purnima. In Buddhist tradition, this is also the anniversary of Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath. For yogis, Guru Purnima is when Adiyogi (Shiva) first turned south and began transmitting knowledge to the Saptarishis.
According to the Bhagavata Purana, when Vyasa was born, Parashara (his father, a great sage) knew that this child would be the organizer of the Vedas — which were becoming too vast for ordinary humans to comprehend and preserve. Vyasa divided the single Veda into four (Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva), composed the 18 Puranas, and dictated the Mahabharata to Ganesha as his scribe. By doing so, he ensured that divine knowledge would remain accessible across generations. On Guru Purnima, students and disciples honor this chain of transmission by bowing to their own teachers — the living links in a lineage that extends to Vyasa and beyond.

Vedic Astrology & Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima falls on Ashadha Purnima — the full moon when Jupiter (Guru Graha) is most potent. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, governs wisdom, teachers, and spiritual knowledge. Full moon in Ashadha amplifies Jupiter's significations. Devotees born with Jupiter prominent in their chart (Sagittarius rising, Pisces Moon, or strong 9th house) feel this festival's spiritual resonance most deeply. Offering to one's teacher on this day strengthens Jupiter in the nativity.
