Guru Purnima is the day to honor and express gratitude to one's spiritual or academic teacher. Vyasa (Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa) — the sage who compiled and organized the Vedas, wrote the Mahabharata, and composed the 18 Maha Puranas — was born on Ashadha Purnima. According to the Bhagavata Purana, when Vyasa was born, Parashara (his father, a great sage) knew that this child would be the organizer of the Vedas — which were becoming too vast for ordinary humans to comprehend and preserve. Vyasa divided the single Veda into four (Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva), composed the 18 Puranas, and dictated the Mahabharata to Ganesha as his scribe. By doing so, he ensured that divine knowledge would remain accessible across generations. On Guru Purnima, students and disciples honor this chain of transmission by bowing to their own teachers — the living links in a lineage that extends to Vyasa and beyond.
