Quick Answer

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami. In 2025 it is 16 Aug; in 2026 it is Friday, 4 September. Fasting continues through the day and puja is performed at midnight (Nishita Kaal) — the exact moment of Krishna's birth.

Janmashtami 2026 — Significance & Celebration

Krishna was born at the stroke of midnight in a prison cell in Mathura, to Devaki and Vasudeva — a divine birth kept secret to protect the infant from his uncle Kamsa. Kamsa had imprisoned Devaki after receiving a prophecy that her 8th child would kill him. As soon as Krishna was born, Vasudeva carried him across the flood-swollen Yamuna to Gokul, where he was raised by foster parents Yashoda and Nanda. The 8th day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month is thus observed as the most sacred birth anniversary in the Vaishnava tradition. The event is described in the Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 10) in elaborate detail.

Kamsa had slain Devaki's first 7 children. On the night of Krishna's birth, divine events unfolded: prison guards fell asleep, chains snapped open, prison doors unlocked on their own. A divine voice guided Vasudeva to carry the infant to Gokul. The Yamuna, in full monsoon flood, parted to let Vasudeva cross. Lord Shesha (the divine serpent) spread his hoods to shield the baby from rain. In Gokul, Yashoda had just given birth to a girl child (Yogamaya). Vasudeva exchanged the infants, returned to prison, and the chains locked themselves again. When Kamsa came to seize the 8th child, the infant (Yogamaya) flew from his hands, transformed into a goddess, and proclaimed that his destroyer was already alive. Kamsa, unable to find Krishna, ordered the massacre of all male infants — the event that ultimately sealed his fate.

Vedic Astrology & Janmashtami

Krishna was born when the Sun was in Cancer (his moon sign in most traditions), Moon was in Rohini nakshatra (the most auspicious nakshatra), and the Ashtami tithi was active — all of which combined to create the "Jayanti Yoga," considered the most auspicious birth combination. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama or Krishna's 108 names on this day is believed to dissolve karmic debts and reduce the effect of malefic Saturn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Janmashtami 2026 is on Friday, 4 September. The Nishita Puja (midnight worship) is performed around midnight of 4/5 September. The date sits later than usual because 2026 has an extra lunar month (Adhika Jyeshtha).

Nishita Puja is the midnight worship of Krishna at the exact moment of his birth. It is considered the most important ritual of Janmashtami. The puja window is approximately 45–60 minutes around midnight.

Many devotees fast through the day until after midnight puja. The fast can be a complete water fast (nirjala) or a fruit-and-milk fast (phalahar). The fast is broken after the midnight puja with panchamrit prasad.

Dahi Handi is celebrated on the day after Janmashtami (Nandotsav), especially in Maharashtra. Teams of young men form human pyramids to break a clay pot (handi) filled with curd hung high — re-enacting Krishna's famous butter-stealing exploits.
