Nadi Dosha is the most heavily weighted incompatibility indicator in the Ashtakoota Guna Milan system — the 36-point compatibility matching used in North Indian Vedic astrology for kundli matching before marriage. It carries 8 out of a total of 36 points, making it the single largest component. Nadi Dosha occurs when both the bride and groom have the same Nadi — the same one of the three Nadi types (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya) determined by their birth Nakshatra. As of 2026, Nadi Dosha remains the most common reason a traditional astrologer advises against a proposed marriage match.

The word "Nadi" in this context refers to a physiological-constitutional type derived from Ayurveda — the three Nadis correspond to the three Doshas (Prakriti types): Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. When two people share the same Nadi, the classical texts indicate that their fundamental constitutions are too similar, creating biological and karmic incompatibilities. The Muhurta Chintamani and Vivah Pathal sections of the Dharmasindhu both cite Nadi as the most important factor in compatibility matching.

The classical concern with Nadi Dosha focuses on two primary outcomes: health problems in one or both partners, and difficulty conceiving or sustaining children. The reasoning in Ayurveda-derived astrology is that two people with identical constitutions produce offspring with an unstable genetic-energetic balance. Two Pitta types together (both Madhya Nadi) produce excess heat; two Vata types together (both Aadi Nadi) produce excess instability.

However, like all astrological doshas, Nadi Dosha has well-defined cancellation conditions. I've seen clients in deeply happy, healthy marriages that had Nadi Dosha in their matching — because one of the 8 cancellation conditions was clearly present. Accurate assessment matters more than the raw dosha flag.

You can check Nadi compatibility and your full Ashtakoota score at the marriage compatibility calculator or explore your individual Nakshatra placement at the birth chart calculator.

What is Nadi and how is it determined?

Nadi is one of the three primary biological constitution types in Ayurveda, corresponding to the three Doshas. In Vedic astrology's compatibility system, Nadi is determined by the birth Nakshatra of each person.

The 27 Nakshatras are divided into three groups of 9, with each group belonging to one of the three Nadis:

Nadi | Ayurvedic Dosha | Nakshatra Group

  • Aadi Nadi — Vata (air + ether) — Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
  • Madhya Nadi — Pitta (fire + water) — Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada
  • Antya Nadi — Kapha (earth + water) — Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

When both partners were born in Nakshatras belonging to the same Nadi group, the 8 points for Nadi in the Ashtakoota system are scored as zero — and Nadi Dosha is present.

Why does having the same Nadi create problems in marriage?

The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) and the Vivaha Pathal of the Dharmasindhu both present the same-Nadi condition as the most serious incompatibility in the matching system. The classical reasoning combines two frameworks:

Ayurvedic reasoning: Two people with the same constitutional type amplify each other's imbalances. Two Vata (Aadi) types together experience amplified anxiety, instability, and nervous system issues. Two Pitta (Madhya) types together produce anger, inflammation, and competitive dynamics. Two Kapha (Antya) types together experience inertia, weight gain, and emotional stagnation as a couple.

Karmic/genetic reasoning: The Dharmasindhu states that children born to same-Nadi parents have an imbalanced Prakriti (constitution) that predisposes them to health vulnerabilities. The child receives only one constitution type amplified, rather than a balanced combination.

The Muhurta Chintamani (a 17th-century matchmaking text) uses explicit language: "Samanaadi vivahe doshah — in marriage between same-Nadi people, the dosha arises." The predicted outcomes are: ill health of the native (the verse specifies either the husband or wife), difficulty in progeny, and in extreme cases, untimely death of one partner.

Modern astrologers including K.N. Rao recommend that Nadi Dosha receive serious weight in the analysis but that it not be treated in isolation from the full chart.

Which Nakshatras belong to each Nadi?

The 9 Nakshatras in each Nadi group are critical to know for accurate Nadi Dosha assessment. The table below provides the complete list.

Aadi Nadi (Vata) Nakshatras: Ashwini (Mesha), Ardra (Mithuna), Punarvasu (Mithuna/Karka), Uttara Phalguni (Kanya), Hasta (Kanya), Jyeshtha (Vrishchika), Moola (Dhanu), Shatabhisha (Kumbha), Purva Bhadrapada (Kumbha/Meena)

Madhya Nadi (Pitta) Nakshatras: Bharani (Mesha), Mrigashira (Vrishabha/Mithuna), Pushya (Karka), Purva Phalguni (Simha), Chitra (Kanya/Tula), Anuradha (Vrishchika), Purva Ashadha (Dhanu), Dhanishtha (Makara/Kumbha), Uttara Bhadrapada (Meena)

Antya Nadi (Kapha) Nakshatras: Krittika (Mesha/Vrishabha), Rohini (Vrishabha), Ashlesha (Karka), Magha (Simha), Swati (Tula), Vishakha (Tula/Vrishchika), Uttara Ashadha (Dhanu/Makara), Shravana (Makara), Revati (Meena)

Each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes of arc in the zodiac. The birth Nakshatra is determined by the precise position of the Moon at the time of birth — which is why an accurate birth time (within 15 minutes) is essential for reliable Nadi matching.

What are the 8 cancellation conditions for Nadi Dosha?

Classical matchmaking texts including the Vivah Pathal, the Muhurta Chintamani, and regional digests from Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan provide cancellation conditions that nullify Nadi Dosha even when both partners share the same Nadi.

Cancellation Condition 1: Different Nakshatra, same Nadi. When both partners have different birth Nakshatras that happen to belong to the same Nadi group, many classical sources (including the Dharmasindhu) state the dosha is reduced or cancelled. The full dosha applies only when both the Nakshatra AND the Nadi are identical.

Cancellation Condition 2: Same Nakshatra, different Rashi. When both partners share the same birth Nakshatra but are born in different Rashis (Moon signs) — which happens with Nakshatras that span the boundary between two signs, like Punarvasu (Mithuna/Karka), Krittika (Mesha/Vrishabha), etc. — the Nadi Dosha is cancelled because the Nakshatra's energy is modified by the different Rashi.

Cancellation Condition 3: Same Nakshatra, different Charan (Pada). When both partners share the same Nakshatra but are in different Charans (each Nakshatra has 4 Charans of 3°20' each), some regional texts cancel the dosha. However, this cancellation is less universally accepted.

Cancellation Condition 4: Different Rashis even with same Nadi. When the Moon signs (Rashis) of the couple are different, some texts — particularly those from the South Indian tradition — consider this sufficient to cancel Nadi Dosha.

Cancellation Condition 5: Venus is in the 7th house of either chart. When Venus — the planet of love and marriage — is strongly placed in the 7th house of either partner's chart, its benefic influence on the marriage house overrides the Nadi incompatibility.

Cancellation Condition 6: Jupiter aspects the 7th house or 7th lord in either chart. Jupiter's full aspect on the 7th house or its lord in either partner's chart, described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra as the most powerful marriage benefic aspect, cancels Nadi Dosha.

Cancellation Condition 7: Same Rashi for both partners (Eka Rashi). When both partners share the same Moon sign (Rashi), some classical texts consider the Rashi match to neutralize the Nadi concern, as the deep emotional attunement of same Rashi partners compensates for the constitutional similarity.

Cancellation Condition 8: Navamansha Nadi differs. When the Nadi calculated from the Navamsha (D-9 divisional chart) Nakshatra differs between the partners, some advanced practitioners consider this a functional cancellation of the birth-chart Nadi Dosha.

How severe is Nadi Dosha compared to other Ashtakoota doshas?

Within the 36-point Ashtakoota system, Nadi Dosha's 8-point weight makes it the most significant single factor. The full scoring hierarchy is:

Koota | Points | What It Measures

  • Nadi — 8 — Health and progeny compatibility
  • Bhakoot — 7 — Moon sign position ratio
  • Gana — 6 — Nature/temperament (Deva/Manava/Rakshasa)
  • Maitri — 5 — Planetary friendship of Rashi lords
  • Yoni — 4 — Sexual compatibility (animal symbol)
  • Tara — 3 — Birth star compatibility
  • Vashya — 2 — Control/influence between partners
  • Varna — 1 — Caste/spiritual evolution compatibility

In traditional matchmaking, a total score of 18 or more out of 36 is the minimum for marriage approval. Nadi Dosha alone (0 out of 8) requires the total from the remaining 7 factors to be at least 18 points. If the total falls below 18, most classical astrologers advise against the match.

However, B.V. Raman explicitly stated in "Marriage, Matching and Compatibility" that the Ashtakoota score is a starting point, not an ending point. The full chart analysis — D-1, D-9, Dasha compatibility, and mutual transits — provides the complete picture.

Is Nadi matching scientifically valid?

Nadi matching as a system is not validated by modern scientific research. No clinical study has demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between same-Nadi marriages and the outcomes predicted (health problems, progeny difficulties). This is an honest acknowledgment, not a dismissal of the tradition.

The Ayurvedic basis for Nadi (constitutional medicine) is a sophisticated system with its own internal logic. The extension of that logic to marital compatibility prediction is a philosophical proposition — the same type of proposition that underlies all traditional matchmaking systems across cultures.

K.N. Rao, in seminars at the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences, said that Nadi matching gives a statistical picture across populations but should not be used to predict individual marriages. He noted seeing many couples with Nadi Dosha in excellent marriages and many couples with perfect Nadi scores in troubled ones — reinforcing that full chart analysis must accompany the Guna Milan score.

The tradition deserves respect as an accumulated system of pattern recognition from centuries of observation. It also deserves honesty about its limits as a predictive tool for individual lives.

What remedies address Nadi Dosha?

The primary remedy for Nadi Dosha is the Nadi Dosha Nivaran Puja — a Shiva puja with Mahamrityunjaya Japa performed specifically to address the health and progeny concerns associated with the same-Nadi union. The puja includes:

1. 11,000 recitations of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra ("Om Tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanam, urvarukamiva bandhanat mrityor mukshiya maamritat") 2. Offering of 11 types of fruits, 11 betel leaves, and sesame oil lamps 3. Donation of gold or silver to a Brahmin or temple 4. The couple together performs Rudrabhishek (Shiva abhishekam) at a Shiva temple

Wearing a gold Nadi Dosha Nivaran Yantra (engraved with specific Sanskrit yantric patterns) on the body is also prescribed by practitioners in the Rajasthani and Marwari traditions.

Additionally, both partners reciting the Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times daily from the marriage date onward is a long-term maintenance remedy that addresses the health dimension of Nadi Dosha.
