Ubhayachari Yoga is an auspicious Surya (Sun-based) yoga in Vedic astrology, formed when planets — excluding the Moon — occupy both the 2nd house AND the 12th house from the natal Sun simultaneously. The name Ubhayachari comes from Sanskrit: ubhaya (both) and chari (moving/positioned) — "positioned on both sides." This yoga creates a Solar configuration where the Sun is flanked by planets on both sides, supported and strengthened from both directions at once, and the native receives the full range of Solar blessings: authority, vitality, career success, and personal radiance.

What Is Ubhayachari Yoga?
Ubhayachari Yoga belongs to a group of three Solar (Sun-based) yogas in Vedic astrology:
- Voshi Yoga — planets in the 12th house from the Sun (behind the Sun)
- Veshi Yoga — planets in the 2nd house from the Sun (ahead of the Sun)
- Ubhayachari Yoga — planets in both the 2nd and 12th from the Sun
These are the Surya Adhi Yogas — yogas formed in relation to the Sun. Just as Sunapha/Anapha/Durudhara are the Moon's flanking yogas, Voshi/Veshi/Ubhayachari are the Sun's flanking yogas.
Formation rule: At least one planet from the set {Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn} must be in the 2nd house from the natal Sun, AND at least one must be in the 12th house from the Sun. The Moon is excluded from forming these yogas (the Moon's position relative to the Sun creates lunar phases rather than this yoga). Rahu and Ketu are also excluded.
Ubhayachari Yoga Strength Levels
The quality of Ubhayachari Yoga depends heavily on which planets flank the Sun:
Flanking Combination | Strength | Primary Effect
- Jupiter (both sides) | Highest | Wisdom, authority, and divine-like personal power
- Venus + Jupiter | Very High | Personal radiance, wealth, and regal bearing
- Mercury + Jupiter | Very High | Intellectual authority and communicative power
- Venus + Mercury | High | Artistic authority and eloquent self-expression
- Any benefic + malefic | Mixed | Some domains bless; others carry friction
- Two malefics flanking | Lower | Power and drive without ease; achievement through hardship
Strength multipliers:
- The Sun itself is in its own sign (Leo) or exaltation (Aries) → maximum amplification
- The flanking planets are in their own signs or exaltation → very strong yoga
- The yoga operates from both Lagna (Ascendant) and Moon simultaneously → maximum breadth
Effects of Ubhayachari Yoga
Solar Authority and Radiance: Ubhayachari Yoga significantly amplifies the Sun's natural qualities — self-confidence, authority, leadership capacity, and personal radiance. The native tends to have a commanding presence that others naturally notice and respond to.
Career and Professional Recognition: The Sun governs career success, professional authority, and recognition in Vedic astrology. Ubhayachari Yoga amplifies these domains — natives often rise to positions of authority, attract recognition for their abilities, and command genuine respect in their professional fields.
Physical Vitality: The Sun governs physical vitality and immune function. Flanked by supportive planets, the Sun's life-giving energy is amplified — Ubhayachari natives typically have strong physical constitution and sustained energy.
Father and Paternal Blessings: The Sun is the karaka of the father in Vedic astrology. Ubhayachari Yoga often correlates with strong paternal support, beneficial relationship with the father, and the continuation of paternal legacy.
Personal Magnetism: Like Durudhara for the Moon, Ubhayachari creates an amplified Solar personality — the native radiates in a way that draws others. Leadership and influence come naturally.
Ubhayachari Yoga in Classic Texts
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes Ubhayachari Yoga natives as possessing "the strength and splendour of a lion, a pleasing physique, a confident bearing, and the ability to command others." The combination of Solar power with bilateral planetary support produces what the texts call "Rajayoga-like" results — a life quality comparable to royalty in terms of authority, comfort, and social standing.
Comparison: Ubhayachari vs. Durudhara
Yoga | Base Planet | Domain
- Durudhara | Moon | Mind, emotions, daily circumstances, personal magnetism
- Ubhayachari | Sun | Authority, career, vitality, father, public recognition
When a birth chart has both Durudhara (Moon flanked) and Ubhayachari (Sun flanked), the native possesses both emotional richness (Durudhara) and Solar authority (Ubhayachari) — an exceptionally powerful configuration for both inner fulfilment and outer achievement.
Ubhayachari Yoga — Practical Examples
Jupiter in 12th + Venus in 2nd from Sun: The wisdom and philosophical depth of Jupiter behind the Sun, combined with Venus's aesthetic grace and social charm ahead — the native has both inner wisdom and outward beauty of character. Often produces artists or educators who are both deeply wise and widely admired.
Mars in 12th + Mercury in 2nd from Sun: Courageous inner drive (Mars) combined with communicative intelligence and business acumen (Mercury) — a natural entrepreneur or competitive professional. The Sun's authority is backed by Mars's passion and expressed through Mercury's verbal skill.
Saturn in 2nd + Jupiter in 12th from Sun: Methodical wealth-building (Saturn ahead) with philosophical depth behind — authority through endurance and wisdom. Common in the charts of those who build lasting institutions or demonstrate sustained excellence over decades.
