Sankashti Chaturthi is the 4th tithi (Chaturthi) of the waning lunar fortnight (Krishna Paksha) — the monthly Ganesha fast that removes all obstacles (Sankashti = crisis/obstacle, Chaturthi = 4th day). It occurs once per month and 12 times per year. The Ganesha Purana identifies this as the most important monthly Ganesha observance: one who fasts on all 12 Sankashti Chaturthis in a year attains the same merit as performing the Ashvamedha Yajna (the most powerful Vedic fire ritual). The fast is broken only after sighting the moon — Ganesha's vehicle connection to the moon makes the moonrise sighting the completion signal for the fast.

In Vedic astrology, Ganesha governs Ketu (South Node) and is invoked before any planetary remedy to remove obstacles from the remedy's path. As of 2026, any planetary remedy for Rahu-Ketu axis issues is preceded by Ganesha worship. Sankashti Chaturthi is the monthly reset for Ganesha's obstacle-removal energy. What Is the Significance of Sankashti Chaturthi?

The Ganesha Purana narrates why the 4th tithi of the waning fortnight is Ganesha's most potent day: after the moon (Chandra) had accumulated excessive pride, Ganesha cursed it to wane and lose its luminosity. The moon performed severe penance and reached Ganesha on the Krishna Chaturthi — the 4th day of the waning cycle when the moon is dim. Ganesha, pleased by the moon's devotion, moderated his curse and made this day the most auspicious for his worship. The moon's dimness on this day reflects the story of its humbling and redemption.

Sankashti specifically means "difficult situation" or "crisis that requires resolution." The Chaturthi fast is prescribed for exactly these situations — when life presents a specific obstacle, crisis, or stuck situation, the Sankashti Chaturthi vow (for a specified number of months) is the Ganesha remedy with the highest documented effectiveness.

What Is Vinayaka Chaturthi?

Vinayaka Chaturthi is the 4th tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) — the Ganesha day that falls when the moon is growing. The annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival (the biggest Ganesha celebration, August-September) falls on the Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. Vinayaka Chaturthi is auspicious for starting new ventures. Sankashti Chaturthi is for obstacle removal. Together they provide a bi-monthly Ganesha practice — one for new beginnings (Shukla Chaturthi) and one for removing obstacles (Krishna Chaturthi).

How to Observe Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat

The complete Sankashti Chaturthi method from the Ganesha Purana:

Morning: Wake before sunrise, bathe, wear clean clothing, begin the fast from sunrise. No food until moonrise.

Daytime: Permitted during fast: water, fruits, dairy (milk, yogurt, ghee). No grains, pulses, or regular salt.

Evening Ganesha Puja (before moonrise): 1. Light a lamp and incense before the Ganesha image (or Ganesha yantra) 2. Apply red sandalwood paste (Sindoor) — Ganesha's specific color 3. Offer 21 Durva grass blades tied in a bundle — the most sacred Ganesha offering (Ganesha Purana: "21 Durva = 21 days of worship with complete offerings") 4. Offer 21 modak (sweet rice dumplings, Ganesha's favorite food) or coconut pieces as symbolic modak 5. Offer red flowers (hibiscus, red rose) 6. Chant Ganesha mantra: Om Gam Ganapataye Namah — 108 times 7. Read the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha

At moonrise: Sight the moon, offer a water-filled vessel to the moon, then break the fast.

Why Must the Moon Be Sighted Before Breaking the Fast?

The moon-sighting requirement for Sankashti Chaturthi comes from the mythology of Ganesha's curse and the moon's redemption. The devotee, by sighting the moon after Ganesha's worship, participates in the moon's redemption story. The moon's appearance signals Ganesha's satisfaction with the day's devotion. Practically: the moonrise time on Krishna Chaturthi falls in the evening — typically between 9 PM and 11 PM depending on the lunar cycle. The moon sighting is the fast-breaking signal; before sighting the moon, no food is eaten regardless of how late it is.

What Is the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha?

Multiple Vrat Kathas exist for Sankashti Chaturthi — one for each of the 12 monthly occurrences, drawn from the Ganesha Purana and the Skanda Purana. The most commonly recited is the story of King Dharmavrata: a righteous king facing the complete collapse of his kingdom (enemy attack, famine, family illness simultaneously) was advised by the sage Vishwamitra to observe Sankashti Chaturthi. The king, his wife, and ministers observed the fast for 12 consecutive months. At the end of 12 months, Ganesha appeared and reversed all the crises simultaneously — enemies retreated, rain returned, illness healed. This Katha establishes the 12-month Sankashti Chaturthi cycle as the complete obstacle-removal practice.

What Are the Benefits of Sankashti Chaturthi?

The Ganesha Purana identifies three categories of benefit. Obstacle removal: all life obstacles (Vighnas) are progressively removed over the course of the 12-month vow cycle. Wish fulfillment: a specific desire stated in the Sankalp at the beginning of the 12-month cycle is fulfilled by the cycle's completion. Karmic clearing: the Mudgala Purana (the most comprehensive Ganesha text) identifies Sankashti Chaturthi as the primary method for clearing the specific karma that creates obstruction — not the karma of past actions generally, but specifically the patterns that block progress in a person's chosen path.
