Past-life karma in the 8th house is often the kind that was hidden or suppressed in previous lifetimes — secrets, betrayals, occult involvement, or sudden traumatic endings that did not get resolved.

Strong 8th house indicators and their past-life meanings:

• Multiple planets in the 8th house: A past life deeply involved with occult knowledge, crisis, inheritance, or transformation
• 8th lord strongly placed: The soul has engaged repeatedly with depth and hidden dimensions
• Rahu in the 8th house: Intense curiosity about occult, past-life mysteries, and the forbidden — Rahu intensifies 8th house themes into this life's central hunger

When a planet is retrograde at birth, it appears to move backward from Earth's perspective. In Jyotish, retrograde planets (vakri grahas) indicate energy that is returning — something from a previous life that has come back for completion. The soul chose a retrograde planet at birth precisely because the planet's domain held unfinished business.

What retrograde means for each planet:

Venus-Ketu aspect or conjunction: Indicates past-life romantic karma of great intensity — a love that was not resolved, a vow that was not kept, or a creative partnership that was broken. Moon-Ketu conjunction or close aspect: Past-life mother or family karma. The soul's relationship with its mother (and by extension, emotional security and nurturing) was a significant karmic theme. This placement often corresponds to an early-life sense of emotional orphaning, driving the person toward spiritual seeking as the deepest form of home.

Rahu in the 12th house: In the house of the past life, Rahu creates a complex pattern: a strong pull toward foreign places, isolation, and spiritual seeking that feels simultaneously fated and compulsive. This placement often indicates past-life connections to distant lands that are re-emerging in this life.

The most revealing method is to look at three things together:

First, note Ketu's house and sign — this is the past-life territory. Second, examine the 12th house's ruler, sign, and any planets within it — this is the domain of completion and release. Third, identify any retrograde planets and the areas of life they govern — these are the specific unfinished-business themes.

The convergence of all three gives a picture: if Ketu is in the 9th house (past-life religion/guru), the 12th house has Jupiter (past-life spirituality), and Mercury is retrograde (unfinished teaching), the soul has carried a spiritual teaching lineage across lifetimes and has returned to complete or transmit something important.
