Makar Sankranti 2026 falls on January 14, 2026 (Wednesday) — the day the Sun (Surya) transits from Sagittarius into Capricorn (Makar Rashi). It is the only major Hindu festival fixed by the solar calendar rather than the lunar calendar, which is why it falls on January 14 or 15 every year with minimal variation. Sankranti means "solar transit" — and the Capricorn transit specifically marks Uttarayan (the Sun's northward journey), when the days begin lengthening in the Northern Hemisphere. The Mahabharata records that Bhishma Pitamah waited on his bed of arrows specifically for Uttarayan to die — the tradition holds that death during Uttarayan leads directly to liberation.

In Vedic astrology, the Sun's transit into Capricorn (Saturn's sign) is the most significant annual solar event. The Sun in Capricorn (Makar) is in the sign of its child's enemy — Saturn (Shani) is the Sun's son and their relationship is fraught. But the Sun in Capricorn also represents the greatest period of discipline, focused effort, and structural achievement. This tension between solar fire and Saturnine structure is exactly what Makar Sankranti's harvest tradition represents: the year's first harvest, discipline producing results. What Is Uttarayan and Why Is It Sacred?

Uttarayan (from Uttar = north + Ayan = journey) is the Sun's northward journey — the six-month period when the Sun moves northward from Capricorn to Gemini (January through June). The Mahabharata's Bhishma Pitamah story: After being fatally wounded in the Kurukshetra battle, Bhishma had the power to choose his time of death (due to a boon from his father). He lay on his bed of arrows through the entire winter (Dakshinayan — the Sun's southward journey) and died specifically on Uttarayan, stating that dying during the Sun's northward journey leads to liberation. This establishes Uttarayan as the most auspicious period for completing one's life journey.

The Bhagavad Gita (8.24-25) also identifies the "bright path" of liberation as associated with fire, light, daytime, the bright fortnight, and the six months of Uttarayan — all solar, luminous energies. Uttarayan is the half-year when these liberation energies dominate.

What Is the Makar Sankranti Tradition by Region?

Makar Sankranti is celebrated differently across India — it is the most regionally diverse festival in the Hindu calendar:

Uttar Pradesh/Bihar: Khichdi festival — cooking and donating rice-lentil khichdi on Makar Sankranti morning. The donation of khichdi to Brahmins and the poor is the primary meritorious act.

Maharashtra: Til-Gul — sesame seed and jaggery sweets (Tilgul Ladoo) are exchanged with the greeting: Tilgul ghya, god god bola ("Take sesame-jaggery, speak sweetly"). The symbolism: sesame seed's heat and jaggery's sweetness together = warm, sweet relationships.

Gujarat: Uttarayan kite flying festival — one of India's largest kite festivals, with international kite flyers visiting Ahmedabad and Surat. Kites represent the human soul's upward reach toward the divine during Uttarayan.

Tamil Nadu: Pongal — the 4-day harvest festival beginning on Makar Sankranti is the most important festival in Tamil Nadu (covered separately).

Punjab: Lohri — celebrated the evening before Makar Sankranti (January 13), a bonfire festival marking the end of winter. Lohri is specifically for newly married couples and newborns.

Assam: Bihu — Assam's major harvest festival coincides with Makar Sankranti.

Why Is Khichdi Eaten and Donated on Makar Sankranti?

The Khichdi (rice and lentil porridge) tradition of Makar Sankranti comes from the Puranas: the sage Gorakhnath was distributing khichdi to his disciples on Makar Sankranti morning when a divine message indicated that this simple meal donated on this day carries the merit of donating gold. The simplicity of khichdi — the most minimal, nourishing food — represents the harvest's essence: maximum nourishment from minimum complexity. Khichdi donation to the poor on Makar Sankranti morning is the most universally prescribed charitable act of the festival.

What Is the Til-Gur (Sesame-Jaggery) Significance?

Sesame seeds (Til) are the sacred offering specifically connected to the solar festival because: sesame seeds are warming (pitta-activating in Ayurveda), aligned with the Sun's increasing heat; they are Shani's (Saturn's) offering, and Makar Sankranti is the Sun entering Shani's sign; they represent the year's first agricultural harvest. The pairing with Gur (jaggery) adds sweetness to warmth — the traditional greeting "Tilgul ghya, god god bola" expresses the wish for sweet speech and warm relationships throughout the year.

What Is the Puja Method for Makar Sankranti?

January 14, 2026 practice: 1. Wake before sunrise and bathe — river bathing is specifically prescribed (Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari bathing on Makar Sankranti carries Kumbh-equivalent merit according to the Skanda Purana) 2. Face east at sunrise and offer water (Arghya) to the Sun: pour water from a copper vessel while facing the rising Sun and reciting: Om Suryaya Namah 3. Chant the Aditya Hridaya Stotra (the complete Sun hymn from the Ramayana) — specifically prescribed for Makar Sankranti 4. Donate khichdi, sesame, jaggery, warm clothing, or blankets to the needy 5. Evening: light a lamp before the Sun image and offer red flowers
