Dussehra 2026 falls on October 12, 2026 (Monday) — Vijaya Dashami (Vijaya = victory, Dashami = 10th day). It is the 10th day after Navratri begins, when Rama defeated Ravana, Durga defeated Mahishasura, and Pandavas ended their year of disguise (Agyatvas). Dussehra comes from Das (10) + Hara (defeated) = the defeat of the 10-headed Ravana. The burning of Ravana's effigy (Ravan Dahan) is the central public event — effigies sometimes 50-100 feet tall burn at sunset, watched by hundreds of thousands in cities across North India.

In Vedic astrology, Vijaya Dashami is among the most auspicious days of the year for new beginnings (Sarva Siddha Muhurat — a self-evidently auspicious Muhurat that requires no further calculation). The Muhurta Chintamani identifies Vijaya Dashami as one of the five Abujha Muhurtas (flawless Muhurtas where any auspicious start is automatically blessed). New property purchases, job joinings, marriages, and important decisions made on Dussehra require no additional Muhurat calculation. The Three Dussehra Stories

Rama's Victory: On the 10th day of Navratri, Rama killed Ravana using the Brahmastra given by the sage Agastya. The Valmiki Ramayana narrates: Ravana's 10 heads kept regenerating as Rama cut them. Agastya arrived on the battlefield and taught Rama the Aditya Hridaya Stotra (the Sun hymn), which provided the specific energy Rama needed. Rama recited it and then fired the Brahmastra — Ravana fell. The 10-day battle concluded on Vijaya Dashami.

Durga's Victory: The Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana) narrates that after an extended battle, Durga slew the buffalo demon Mahishasura on the 10th day. The Durga Saptashati's middle section concludes with this victory. Bengal's Durga Puja celebrates this specifically — the idol immersion on Vijaya Dashami represents Durga's return to Kailash after the victory.

Pandavas' Return: The Mahabharata's Virata Parva narrates that the Pandavas hid their weapons in a Shami tree during their year of disguise. On Vijaya Dashami, they retrieved their weapons and revealed their identities. The tradition of worshipping the Shami tree on Dussehra (still common in Maharashtra and Karnataka) comes from this story.

Ravan Dahan: Timing and Tradition in 2026

Ravan Dahan 2026 timing: The Vijaya Muhurat on October 12, 2026 is the most auspicious time — approximately 2 PM - 3 PM (the post-noon period known as Aparahna, which has a specific Vijaya quality on Dashami). The Ravan Dahan effigy burning typically happens at sunset (approximately 5:30-6:00 PM across India). Verify the exact Vijaya Muhurat for your city in the 2026 Panchang.

Famous Ravan Dahan locations:

  • Delhi's Ramlila Maidan — the largest Ravan Dahan in India; the effigy reaches up to 65 feet; attended by India's Prime Minister and senior officials
  • Varanasi Ramnagar Ramlila — a 400-year-old tradition with the most elaborate 30-day Ramlila culminating on Dussehra
  • Mysuru (Karnataka) — the most visually spectacular Dussehra celebration in South India; the Mysore Palace is illuminated with 100,000 lights

What Is the Vijaya Muhurat?

Vijaya Muhurat is the Aparahna period on Vijaya Dashami — the approximately 2-hour window in the post-noon to pre-sunset period that has a specific victory quality. The Muhurta Chintamani identifies this as the time Rama fired the Brahmastra at Ravana. Any new beginning made during Vijaya Muhurat carries the energy of Rama's decisive victory. Start a business, sign a contract, make an important decision, or begin a new venture during this window.

October 12, 2026 Vijaya Muhurat: Approximately 1:45 PM - 3:45 PM (varies by city). Verify in the 2026 Panchang.

Ayudha Puja (South India) on Dussehra

In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, Dussehra coincides with Ayudha Puja — the worship of tools, vehicles, and instruments as manifestations of the Goddess's creative power. Mechanics clean and garland their vehicles. Artisans worship their tools. Musicians worship their instruments. Students worship their books. Offices and factories perform Ayudha Puja before the Dussehra holiday. The Mysore Dasara (Dasara = Vijaya Dashami in Karnataka) is the most elaborate state-sponsored celebration — the Mysore Palace procession with the Goddess idol on a decorated elephant is iconic.

Shami Tree Worship on Dussehra

The Shami tree (Prosopis cineraria) is worshipped on Dussehra in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat — specifically because the Pandavas hid their weapons in a Shami tree during their year of disguise. Exchanging Shami leaves with the greeting Shami-shamana Pap naasham ("May the Shami tree destroy our sins") is the traditional Dussehra social greeting in these regions.
